Yeah and how often do you get an authentic piece of Chinese propaganda?

Every time I buy something that says "Made in China", it feels like an authentic piece of propaganda.

Those Che Guerra shirts have always really bothered me. Seems like people wear them just because they are cool and not because they really know what he stood foor. At least with Sean's watch the reference is so blatant. Also it is an authentic piece or Chinese propaganda, not something purchased at the local hot topic.

What's blatant about it? It's a Chinese guy waving with the Chinese flag in the background. It's not like the guy is ordering the execution of a prisoner right there on the watch. In either case, if you don't know who the guy is or what he's done, you'd have no idea what you're wearing.

You're not likely to find shirts of Che Guerra in Venezuela (I think that's the right country) precisely because of what he stood for. On the other hand, the Chinese government wants to look as good as possible, even while doing evil and nasty things. To that end, they're more than willing to sell you watch with the guy waving his hand against the backdrop of the Chinese flag.

I love China as a country but I'm afraid the regime is trying to make China the world's only superpower. Really, Iran, N-Korea, Iraq, etc are no threat at all compared to China. The way in which China is trying to "conquer" Africa for its resources is also alarming.
I read this article about Chinese counterfeit hardware a few days ago. Makes me wonder how save my modem with build-in firewall is...
Maybe everyone in Firefly also speeking Chinese isn't such a bad prediction after all.

Despite what that article might make you think, you don't have anything to worry about. Selling counterfeit hardware essentially comes down to not putting it through certification tests. Since they don't put it through the tests that Cisco requires, they can't ship it to Cisco to be sold. Since they can't ship it, they simply sell it locally with the Cisco name on it anyway. There's not necessarily anything else that goes on.

It's like buying a counterfeit copy of Windows on the streets of China for $1. There's nothing wrong with it and it probably doesn't have any back doors, it just has a volume license key that doesn't have to be activated and it cost them nothing to obtain it.

You know this already happens in war zones. What else can you consider a drone flown by a guy sitting comfortably miles away in a bunker other than dying at the hands of machines built to kill.

That thing is noisy as hell! I'd hear it coming from extremely far away and unless it had long range weapons on it (guided missiles), you could probably take it out pretty easily with an RPG. Still, it's a step in the right direction.

No different from the people that walk around wearing shirts of Che Guerra really.

I keep hoping the protests that are popping up all over the world over the Olympics in China will serve as a wakeup call to everyone. I'm sure that won't happen though since people just don't care unless it's in their face. I lose a little more hope for humanity every day.

Rubies has always been a third-rate licensee. Up until now, costumes have always been a DIY thing. Museum Replicas will finally offer a licensed alternative to serious costumers.

I'll believe it when I see it.

A lot of people had high hopes for the Vader costume as well. There was a lot of talk on the 501st forums at the time that it would give a lot of people a, relatively, cheaper way in (the costume was about $1000, typical good Vader costume usually runs over $2000). Then they saw the costume. There was actually talk about not letting people in who used that costume as their entrance costume because it was so inaccurate. Thankfully it was decided that since it was licensed that it had to be permitted.

I remember seeing a photo from Comic-Con of someone wearing the licensed Vader costume. I'm not huge on accuracy, but even I noticed that it was the licensed costume and not something home made (the guy didn't tell me before he showed me the picture).

I'm sure the same thing will happen with costumes from Museum Replicas. They'll be heavily scrutinized and, unless they're totally accurate, everyone will know them immediately.

Much like the movie industry, technology allows for more over the top, showy effects, which are then used to hype the product to power-hungry teenage boys. Whatever story might be involved is completely overshadowed by the awesome powers and physics simulation in the game.

Bullshit. You either don't play a lot of games or you believe the hype. The only games in the past 10 years that came out that had very little story and still sold well were the Quake series. That pretty much ended with Doom 3 though. It had amazing graphics, but the "story" and gameplay sucked absolute ass and it's referred to as a $50 tech demo.

LFL could easily make a stunning game from the OT. They just don't care to. There are plenty of characters and a huge galaxy to explore. Hell, Bioware did an awesome job with KoToR. I know it's not the OT, but it's not the PT either and it was a great game. There's no reason something similar can't be done with the OT. I still haven't seen a game in the spirit of Dark Forces where you play on the side of the Empire. The closest they came was Republic Commando. Some people want to be a stormtrooper attempting to put down the pesky rebellion. Maybe at some point you can even choose to defect if you want.

The point is, LFL can easily make a visually stunning, modern game based around the OT. I'm sure it would sell very well too. GL just doesn't want anything to do with that era anymore.

all lucas has to do is have a company make full stormtrooper suits that are complete replicas and sell them. then he will have a legitimate item and the black market guys will have some competition.

unfortunately lucasfilm let master replicas contract run out and did not renew it so what company will now make the replicas of props and lightsabers.

Bwahahaha! You mean like the licensed Vader costume they came out with? The not accurate at all costume that was about $1000? Yeah, the fans ripped on it because they make costumes that are far more accurate.

The "black market" guys don't face any competition from LFL because everyone with a stormtrooper or other armor costume knows that the fans are producing more accurate costumes then LFL licensees are. Licensed costumes are an utter joke that are only there to pull more cash into LFL.

have to agree with BBDV on this one. While SDS helmets were awesome, it was dumb to just try to sidestep the whole licensing issue.... Even if he DID design the helmet (which he didn't, he just MANUFACTURED them), it doesn't mean he owns the design. he was employed by the owner to make them FOR the owner.... My sister works in advertising as an artist & she designs stuff for clients all the time. Even though she designs it, it's not hers. it is owned by the person who paid the comission to have it designed...

Her clients probably have contracts with her that state such things.

Back in 1976, I somehow doubt that Lucas was savvy enough to write up a formal contract with this guy. I know he retained the rights from Fox, mostly because nobody cared about sequels or merchandising in those days, but if all he had with this guy was "Make me x number of helmets for x amount of money" then it's quite possible, under UK law, that he's well within his rights.

From the article "Mr Lucas, who wrote the screenplay and directed the 1977 film, is understood to have hired Mr Ainsworth through intermediaries in 1976, but it is claimed no formal contract was put in place. The designer received just £30,000 for his work."

Make no mistake. Enforcement of IP without a formal contract is different in the US than it is in the UK. The UK court is under no obligation to follow the US court and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if they didn't.

I don't see visiting Tatooine again being a major continuity problem. I just can't see why any major battles would be taking place there.

Its not that it contradicts information, it just contradicts the characterisation of the other films. Tatooine is supposed to be a periphery planet, and the characters are supposed to be out of the loop. Instead we see that every freaking person in the entire series has been to it and met everyone; maybe Anakin and his padawan will drop in on the relatives nearby!

Then: "If there's a bright center to the universe you're on the planet that it's farthest from."

Now Tattooine is the center of the universe. Everything must take place there or at least come into contact with that planet. One would have to wonder why Obi-Wan took baby Luke there if this planet saw so much activity. That's the last place I'd take him.

That's exactly why Lucas couldn't do shit to Parks Sabers. They (Lucas) tried to sue Jeff Parks to keep him from manufacturing and selling Parks Sabers (look like lightsabers and that's what they're used for by fans). Unfortunately for Lucas, and this was told to a group of people by Jeff Parks, he couldn't produce the copyrights so there's nothing he could do.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the law was on this guys side. Lucas didn't try to protect anything accept the story back then. He got Fox to sign over rights to the story, movies, and merchandising, but I'd be damned surprised if he made this guy sign anything and didn't just say "Hey, can you make some costumes that look like this?"

Lucas takes copyright very seriously these days, but back then he didn't expect it to be so popular so he wasn't careful about protecting the copyright. Why he's going after this guy now is beyond me. Plenty of groups sell their "extra" armor on eBay all the time. I guess since this guy is making a living doing it, Lucas finally realized he should try to do something about it.

I swear by the free version of AVG, it has served me well for years. I would imagine the pro version is just as good and better.

I have worked with computers with McAfee and Norton before and found them both very irritating, but that was back in the ninties, I suppose it is possible that they made improvements since then. I always judge my virus software by whether or not I can tell it is running, if it makes itself obvious then I don't want it, if it is doing its job behind the scenes without bother me, then I am happy with it. So far AVG has done a good job of working for me and keeping quiet about it.

mcaffee and norton, you better buying a CD worth of spyware and installing it then using those two peices of garbage. They are both INSANE resourcehogs and in ways jsut as bad as the software your trying to prevent getting onto your computer. I personally use Sophos because UBC provides it for free and its so much nicer.

Dude, did you even read his whole post before frothing at the mouth about how bad McAfee and Norton are? He specifically said he uses AVG because Norton and McAfee both proved to be very irritating in the past.

No. I mean, I'm doing it just for fun now. You know, I'm an executive producer now — I don't do the day-to-day work. I check in once a week, maybe, and it'll be the same thing on the live-action show. I'm also [producing] Red Tails [his long-in-the-works project about WWII's Tuskegee Airmen] — I'm producing all these things now. And then, hopefully, in a year or two I'll be completely removed and I'll just be able to go off and do my own movies again."

So much for moving on after Episode 3. It's been 3 years already George. What makes you think you're going to be completely removed from the process in only a couple more years when you couldn't remove yourself after 3?

Well I don't know, they could make it into a plot point that Anakin is being given a padawaan even though Obi Wan probably believes he's not ready. Maybe the clone war has wiped out so many Jedi that they can no longer assign padawaans just to Masters. Lucas isn't writing it or directing it, keep in mind, so I wouldn't rule out a thought-out justification of some kind. Whether its believable is another matter though.

Whether he's in complete control or not doesn't matter. Anakin training a Padawan is a pretty major plot point, so he'd have the final say on that. Remember, Lucas didn't write any of the NJO books either, but he ok'd Chewie being killed off. That was a major plot point that had to be approved directly through Lucas.

Obi Wan had barely graduated as a padawaan when he got Anakin. But I guess that was a bit of an exception. By the films, I'm not sure theres even any sort of "rules" for when a person can get an apprentice except that it has to be approved by the Jedi Council--but, given the way the Jedi Council views Anakin (not very well) there better be a hell of an explanation as to how they thought it was a good idea to give him one.

Bwahahaha! You want an explanation for it? I'm sorry, but this is Lucas we're talking about. There likely won't be an explanation. Anakin will just get a Padawan and that'll be it. The explanation will be that it's his story and he'll tell it exactly the way he wants, whether it makes sense along with past stories or not.

When was the last time Lucas actually explained something with any thought?

You can try to do a repair install then. Just put your Vista disc in the drive and boot up with it. Tell it you have an existing install (it may find it anyway) and that you want to repair it. It shouldn't take long and your system will be like new after that.

Have you tried to install SP1 yet? I'm hearing pretty good things about it (improves file transfers and a few other things).

I'm going to assume you're running either Windows 2000 or XP.

Click Start, then Run, then type services.msc. Hopefully it'll come up. Check the Windows Audio service to make sure it's running. If it's not, try to start it, it may not even start.

If you can't get that far, restart the computer in safe mode and run one of those virus scanners. If you're on XP, I recommend disabling system restore at this point as well. Speaking of that, if you haven't tried rolling back to before the problem, you might want to try that too.

If it's a boot sector virus (which aren't typical these days), simply overwriting the boot sector with a good one (by using a floppy) will fix that. No need to format the drive in that case.

If you do need to format the drive that fully, you'll have to do a low level format (writes all zeros to the drive). That'll take quite a bit longer to do than a normal format though.

I would also hope that George realizes there are those of us who saw the prequels on the big screen and would like the '99 cut of TPM. I'm willing to give the omission of the 35mm version of AOTC a pass, even though I never got around to seeing the DLP projection. I lived just barely within walking distance of the only theater in the Commonwealth of Virginia that was showing AOTC in DLP, but I saw AOTC on 35mm at Union Station in DC on May 16th and it was more than a month before I thought "hmmm, maybe I should see it in DLP." But by that point they'd already switched it out for the DLP of Scooby-Doo.

I just checked the list of differences on Wikipedia. I must really have not been paying much attention the movie because I don't remember those things being different. The only one that kind of sticks out is the pod race sequence being longer on the DVD than in theaters. The bad parts are still bad though :P

Way to advertise your piracy there Nanner.

I use AVG personally. If your machine is so infected with a virus that it's become impossible to clean, you're much better off just formatting the drive and reinstalling. You don't know how deep the virus could be hiding or what it's really doing behind the scenes. Until the computer has been completely wiped, it may as well be considered totally compromised.

Make sure you have a good backup and then just wipe it. I know it's a pain in the ass, but it's really the only way to make sure it's clean, especially if your virus scanners are having a hard time cleaning it.

The whole "secret" of Sidious' identity was more of a nudge wink sort of thing. The guy never intended for the PT to have any surprises. Lucas obviously never considered the possibility that not every body in the world who was going to see TPM had already seen the OT. If he had approached the PT without the idea that everybody knows what is going to happen anyway, then no doubt it would have been a lot better.

How so? Even if there were people going to see it that hadn't yet seen the originals, there's still things he couldn't really do. He couldn't put Yoda or Obi-Wan in any real danger. Anakin, at some point, had to become Darth Vader. About the only surprise I think he could have pulled would be to either have Padme survive or have her die at Vader's hand. Either one of those would have been preferable to the crapfest we got. But aside from that, I don't think he could've really done a whole lot.

I actually think it would've been a lot better if he had used more material from the OT while making the PT, especially ROTS. At least then they'd have an accurate Tantive IV and they probably wouldn't have had to do pick up shoots to show Obi-Wan retrieving Vader's lightsaber (seriously, HOW did they miss that).

Who really thought it wasn't obvious besides the gushers who still think GL is a genius? I mean seriously, back in the day after TPM came out, even with all the evidence before them, people still wouldn't believe it until they saw Palpatine in the robes.
