The Last Jedi- Full Movie Re-Edit
Time

SYNCHRONIC said:
I think that most of us can agree that Rian Johnson performed a monumentally horrendous act in creating this film, which subverts, deconstructs, tears apart, and hangs upside down (before setting it on fire) so many parts of the Star Wars saga that had been built-up with love and respect over the past 40 years, even The Force Awakens was largely an enjoyable and respectful film. Any work that can salvage it even in the slightest, is worthy work in my opinion.

Here’s to Star Wars and the universe we love!

This seems to be the general disconnect between fans. I tend to believe communities such as those here do what we do because we think tweaks can be made to make something better. If any of us truly dismissed TLJ to the extent you state I don’t honestly see anyone even trying.

A more correct criticism would be that TLJ is not a flawless film, and to analyse those flaws. I watch Ivan’s videos as I’m genuinely interested in some of his tweaks, but he utterly undermines any work he’s doing with statements like ‘fire Kathleen Kennedy’ or encouraging online abuse towards Rian Johnson, because neither impact the film we received.

I respect your reaction to the film, but I want to enhance the good stuff and help hide the bad through edits, nothing more.

Is anyone planning to or already attempting to finish the vfx in the “That’s weird that you recorded that” scene with Finn and BB-8 (unfinished background) and the scene when Finn, Rose, DJ and BB-8 are walking through the Supremacy (finish ceiling, remove gray suited BB-9E puppeteer, remove motor unit)?

I did a first pass of some of the ‘recorded that’ scene recently. I mostly just hid the cable from BB-8 through cropping though.

The Force Awakens - The Brazen Fanedit (Released)

Hi,
Do you think it’s possible you could reencode your edit again but this time at 23.976 frames per second instead of 30 fps? Sometimes I like to burn AVCHD discs but it has to be 23.976 to be compatible. Just a thought.

Thanks.

I should be able to do this. I’m still tweaking it however as I work on my TLJ - Rey hands Luke his saber in my TFA now, plus Porgs are seen on the island briefly to establish them, and TLJ opens with more of a time jump.

I’ll probably post an update here for this when I start a thread for my TLJ. Just nudge me if I forget.

It’s in a major key and has been used ‘in-universe’ just like this in Rebels, for what it’s worth.

This edit does work (although a shot of her multiples remains) but I just saw that scene as an(other) echo of Empire. Luke saw his greatest fear - the potential evil in himself. Rey also sees herself but this time, nothing more than that. Or something.

I just wanted to throw this out there to see what people think.

The “cave” scene was weird. I didn’t understand why there were a million Rey’s all lined up. I’m probably missing something. So I edited that out (albeit, quite poorly) and made a version where she simply walks up to the mirror and asks it her question.

Thoughts?

I’ve been hunting with no avail for this. It’s not even released here in the UK (even though they said it would be on the iTunes release) and it would be really handy for my edit also.

Does anyone know how or know where one can find the music only version of the Last Jedi soundtrack? I can’t for the life of me figure out how to use it in my edit.

He’s not dressed in his ceremonial jedi robes for the fight is he?

To bring up another topic…I did kind of want to see just a little bit more power displayed from Luke. Just a little more. There are a few options for this right now:

  1. The Redone Luke/Kylo fight from Ivan Ortega

This is the thing that I desperately want to work. He said he will film on a green screen with the costumes and all so I just really hope it works out all right.

Is he also going to film a shot of Luke dropping the lightsaber on the island? If he is going to the trouble of having a Luke costume and lightsaber, it seems like a no-brainer.

What if in the one remaining flashback it actually glitches between the different ones - so angry Luke becomes guilty Luke etc etc for little glimpses? Maybe highlighting this is still just one point of view of many but not muddying by them all playing out.

darthrush said:

I’ll have to think that idea through Neverar. It sounds VERY interesting.

The question is…do we want to see Luke consider killing Kylo or not? It all comes back to if we want that moment or not.

Really good ideas being thrown around though.

I think it may be easier to just comp in a dagger that’s spinning/flying off into the next camera shot instead. The motion blur would mask a lot. If wanted one could then be added to the floor in the one or two wides after that.

RogueLeader said:

I’m sure someone has mentioned this already, but I saw some people online talking about a continuity error in the Rey/Kylo Ren vs Preatorian guard battle. At 1:47:14, the beginning of the shot where the dagger guard gets Rey in a locked position, the guard has both daggers still, but suddenly, within the same shot, the the left dagger disappears as soon as it passes from view behind Rey’s back. It’s just gone.

You can see it at 2:27 in this clip. https://youtu.be/7rowkMpohoY?t=143

My assumption is that during the editing process, one of the editors pointed out how the guard could have just stabbed Rey in the back with the other dagger while he/she had her stuck. When they did the choreography and when they were shooting, they probably overlooked it because they had gone through it so many times and those kind of things just become less obvious after repetition. So they did the least amount of work, which was rotoscope it out as soon as it leaves direct view.

I can sympathize with the editors and the vfx people, but now that I’ve seen it I can’t unsee it. I’m just really surprised they didn’t even at least remove it from the whole shot. I mean, there’s no way to explain it disappearing within the film. If they had taken it out of the whole shot, you could at least say that maybe Rey had cut through one of the daggers or something in between shots.

I’m just curious if anyone felt this would be a worthy fix, to rotoscope it out of the first half of the shot. It lasts about a second, so 23ish frames? In the previous shot with Rey and the dagger guard, you see them fighting in the distance behind Kylo Ren, and it would be cool if one could even make it look like Rey cut through one of them (maybe a flash and see it falling, for example) at that moment. In that shot she strikes both the left-hand dagger and the right-hand dagger, and if you had her cut through the left dagger, it also would be about 23 frames or less of work.

Ha, I wondered why I was getting some more recent requests for my TFA edit. I can only assume this post is the cause! Thanks 😃

I also have a 2003 Clone Wars, and a season one Rebels edits near completion so I’ll be sure to mention them when they’re done if there’s any interest.

Info: FakeApp - useful face replacement AI software for Fan Edits?
Time

If any of you follow Jamie Benning on social media (the guy behind the excellent Filmumenteries) he made a very valid, and I think correct observation that TLJ production did in fact cast an original Yoda, but they did not use/find/remember the additional mouth bit that was documented to have been made and added to the original after the casting. It seems it is that that predominantly shapes the upper lip and jaw.

The absolute best use of this would be to take the face of ESB Yoda and put it over TLJ Yoda.

Quick Photoshop attempt;

I want some of what bottom Yoda’s smoking.

I think it looks to cg

Who is “cg”?
Why does It look to him?
What does It look to CG for? Assistance? guidance?

These are questions we may never find the answers to.

It Looks fake

That’s because it’s a “quick photoshop attempt”.

Here’s a slightly less quick photoshop attempt I made where I overlayed parts of old Yoda on new Yoda:

I think I can make this work in the movie with After Effects rather than FakeApp.

The upper lip is my only real issue with the TLJ puppet. Possibly also the way the mouth scrunches together when closed, but that might just be an extension of the upper lip issue.

The Force Awakens - The Brazen Fanedit (Released)
Time

I know a few people have seen the latest version of this now (2.0) so feel free to feed back here, or on the PM threads.

I forget specifically what was done for this version - probably some more tidying and small tweaks. There’s one particular addition to the forest fight I may now remove in the wake of TLJ, but otherwise there’s possibly some more I may do to the ‘sheild’s down’ sequence if I can cobble some footage together, and may cut Rey out of frame in the map scene (so her and Poe can meet in TLJ), but nearly there for sign off I think.

This works really great I think. Doubly so for me, as in my TFA edit I replaced Jedi Steps with the trailer score, and have always loved it. So this very much could work.

ziggyonice said:

One thing I’ve really wanted to do is see the inclusion of the song “The Jedi Steps” (from The Force Awakens) overlayed with the climatic moment of Luke walking out to confront Kylo Ren and the First Order.

Don’t get me wrong: the existing theme during that scene (“The Spark”) is great. But “The Jedi Steps” gives me chills — it’s the song that introduces us to Luke Skywalker for the first time in the sequel trilogy. Luke the legend, Luke the Jedi Master, Luke returns. That’s why I feel “The Jedi Steps” is so appropriate during the showdown on Crait.

Anyway, I whipped it up in like 10 minutes just to get a feel of what it might look like with this change. This is far from perfect and doesn’t have sound effects or foley, but I’m curious to hear what people think.

Has anyone here tried looking into a radical edit that would invert the structure of TLJ? It was first proposed by Detective on fanedit.org, I simply went into more details and fixed the incoherences. Btw I absolutely agree with everyone here concerning the editing. It’s atrocious and my main negative with the movie. Definitely something to fix.

Anyway, like I said the edit is radical so bear with me until the end here. It’s also quite unique.

It would go like this, and it would require some minor TFA editing as well:

  • We would open with an action setpiece – Hoth 2.0 – along with a suitable crawl. No Finn, no Rey, rest is the same (except no rocks blocking them). Luke projects and the Resistance escapes.

This makes a lot of sense, though probably unfeasible with the actual footage we have. I’d add have LEIA unblock the escape rocks with the Force, with or instead of Rey.
