Blade Runner - The Nexus-7 Cut - Krausfadr

Narrative - This is fix and not a mix, so nothing is changed. The ending is somewhat unresolved, and the unicorn abides. Unless you are deeply into Blade Runner, the unicorn is an enigma.

This ain’t at FE! What the hell?

It’s awesome when I see something of mine reviewed. Thanks for watching.

The main narrative change of N-7 is completely removing Zhora’s dossier so a first time viewer would be unsure if Deckard retired a human, that is, until Bryant comes along and calls her a skin job.

As far as FE goes, I’d love to have some of my edits approved over there, but FE does not seem to have the resources to incorporate new faneditors into their “approved” ranks, at least not within what most people would consider a reasonable amount of time. An edit of mine was in the FE queue for four months pending review, then unfortunately after that wait I got very sick and had to remove it from consideration. It would be nice if they made the process a bit easier (and thus faster) for new editors.

EDIT: I have learned FE will still look at an approved editor’s new release if any errors/glitches/glaring problems are pointed out by the viewers. They should be brought to attention in the user reviews section. People may be apprehensive to give critical reviews but this is important.

Dinner With Hannibal (a Hannibal 2001 Film Edit) - Released
Time

DINNER WITH HANNIBAL

A Hannibal (2001) film editing project in 4K with lossless 5.1 surround sound
To inquire about this edit, email krausfadr at gmail dot com and include the word fanedit in the subject line.

Technical:
• Original runtime 2h 11m, edited runtime 1h 59m
• Released in 4K and 1080p
• HDR to SDR conversion with Dolby Vision
• DTS-MA audio processed in NLE as uncompressed 5.1 channel WAV and encoded to lossless FLAC
• HEVC codec, full 10-bit pipeline, CPU encoded only (no GPU acceleration)
• Selected deleted/alternate scenes upscaled with Topaz

Summary:
• Hannibal Lecter is now depicted as a horrific monster, not some relatable romantic and amusing fellow with a moral code
• Streamlined the storyline, removing convoluted subplots (no more Barney)
• Tightened up the messy opening action sequence, trimming the drama weighing it down
• An improved, dramatic ending with Hannibal acting like the serial killer he is— above all else he is a predator who acts in his own sick self interest
• Mason Verger is a more mysterious and threatening figure
• Clarice Starling is stronger and more decisive while still maintaining her vulnerability
• Inspector Pazzi is smarter (but still not smart enough)
• Established a connection to the first film using the asylum deleted scene, not through Barney
• Lessened the heavy-handed anti-religion themes (from Mason)
• Incorporated select deleted/alternate scenes, scored and re-foleyed as needed, converted to 5.1 surround
• The identity of Il Monstro is clearer than the deleted material alone presented
• Ensured the selected deleted/alternate material matched up reasonably well in 4K by upscaling, color grading, and even removing poor quality shots

Change list: (SPOILER ALERT)
1. Updated the older MGM and Universal logos.
2. Added a news sound byte during the Universal opening logo: an audio flash forward.
3. Removed the opening scene— Barney’s discussion with Mason and sale of the mask.
4. Removed the opening title: “Hannibal.”
5. Clarice sleeping in the transport is cut (repurposed for a later scene).
6. Opening scene is now the FBI setting up at the Fish Market.
7. Clarice doesn’t talk about Evelda being HIV positive.
8. Significantly trimmed and cut various shots after the drug bust goes wrong— to tighten up the action.
9. Evelda doesn’t say, “Is that you, Starling?”
10. Evelda doesn’t shoot Clarice (originally Clarice was hit in the vest). Clarice instead shoots her attacker in mid-draw before she gets a round off.
11. Slowed down Evelda collapsing which is now the end of the scene. Cut Clarice rushing in to help and washing blood off the baby.
12. Cut Clarice sobbing at home after killing Evelda.
13. Trimmed Clarice watching the news coverage of the botched raid and ATF agent killed.
14. Added trimmed deleted scene of Clarice mourning with a colleague.
15. Mason is no longer shown watching the news.
16. At the meeting, Clarice doesn’t mention the death of the agent or say she resents herself for shooting Evelda.
17. Cut Clarice’s lines about feeling betrayed by her boss and saying, “it changes me.”
18. We meet Mason the same time Clarice does. Removed his parody line, “and nobody beats the Riz [the risen Jesus].” He’s serious about religion, not a troll.
19. Removed parts of Mason’s interview, including talking about throwing away an envelope.
20. Mason doesn’t remark to Clarice that she recoiled from him mentioning the name of God.
21. Moved the Mason peeling flashback and discussion of the package/information he received— to be used in a later scene.
22. Cut the X-ray.
23. Cut Barney and Clarice’s entire discussion of Hannibal’s motivations, roller pigeons, and serial killer memorabilia.
24. Moved initial tape playback of Hannibal’s roller pigeon monologue earlier, but it’s mostly in the background.
25. In her basement office we hear VO of Clarice’s continued conversation with Mason as she listens to the Hannibal tapes. Now it is Mason, not Barney, who gave her the tapes.
26. Trimmed some lines and odd facial expressions from the guy who brings Clarice the box of evidence.
27. Removed emphasis on Barney in the old Hannibal asylum surveillance video.
28. Added the deleted scene of Clarice visiting the abandoned asylum but cut the Barney flashback and corny Hannibal voiceover.
29. Trimmed some redundant lines from the awkward groundskeeper letting Clarice into the asylum.
30. Intercut Clarice searching around Hannibal’s empty, dark cell with Mason’s peeling flashback.
31. Clarice is startled by what sounds like Hannibal.
32. Trimmed the encounter with the old vagrant in the cell.
33. After visiting the asylum, Clarice continues listening to the Hannibal tapes at home.
34. Added trimmed deleted scene of Hannibal offering insight to Inspector Pazzi about the Il Monstro local murders.
35. Added audio riser and hit cue when we see the janitor in the crowd deleted scene— to help hint this could be Il Monstro.
36. Added deleted scene of Pazzi sharing Hannibal’s insight with other officers.
37. Integrated part of the deleted scene of Hannibal narrating his letter— to add his condolences for Jack Crawford’s death.
38. Cut some of the crime photos showcased on Clarice’s wall to make the Botticelli victim photo now attributed to Il Monstro less noticeable.
39. Clarice does not tell Paul a lot of detail why Hannibal dines on his victims. No “public service” motivation.
40. Cut Paul’s corn-poned line. We get it already, he’s an asshole.
41. As Pazzi does internet research, cut him looking at a photo of a secret agent guy he never calls. Didn’t use the deleted scene of this call because it was boring.
42. Pazzi doesn’t smile nervously after Hannibal’s snaps his photo. Removed conversation about how the boxes are a heavy two-man job.
43. When Pazzi picks up evidence from Hannibal, added a brief conversation about Il Monstro from a deleted scene.
44. Hannibal doesn’t say, “okie dokie” when helping Pazzi move stuff.
45. Much less of Mason on the call to check on his killer swine.
46. Hannibal doesn’t turn back to glare weirdly at Pazzi during the opera. Pazzi couldn’t have been so dumb not to know his cover was blown at that point.
47. Hannibal doesn’t go into detailed analysis of the sonnet he gives Allegra, alluding to his own love for Clarice.
48. Hannibal incapacitates Pazzi in a more realistic and predatory manner while Il Monstro watches from the shadows. Added translation of Il Monstro’s short dialogue to the deleted scene footage.
49. Less ok’s and no okey-dokey’s from Hannibal during Pazzi’s confinement and interrogation.
50. When Clarice calls Pazzi to warn him, Hannibal hangs up without saying goodbye.
51. Il Monstro nods to a departing Hannibal as the two share a special serial killer moment (added trimmed deleted scene). Added new voice and subtitles to show Il Monstro’s appreciation.
52. Removed Hannibal’s facial antics before slitting a henchmen’s throat.
53. Cut Mason commenting on footage of Hannibal waving.
54. Added deleted scene of Hannibal’s flight to the US. Created new scene of a disturbing dream he has onboard.
55. Added trimmed deleted scene of Hannibal breaking into Clarice’s car and licking the steering wheel.
56. Cut Clarice listening to the roller pigeon tape again after she’s dismissed from duty.
57. Cut some of Hannibal’s weird lines during his extended phone call with Clarice.
58. Cut the second time the mirror warps the shape of Hannibal’s head during the call.
59. Hannibal doesn’t leave ladies shoes in the photo booth and say, “ta ta.”
60. After Hannibal is kidnapped, cut Clarice saying she is not an hysteric and the lines from her boss about not believing her.
61. Cut the scene of Mason wearing Hannibal’s mask.
62. Cut Mason having Paul repeat the bribe amount and calling him a cocksucker.
63. Rescored Mason telling Hannibal of his soon to be fate as hog food. Now it feels more momentous and ominous.
64. Tightened up the second gunfight in barn.
65. Trimmed Mason falling into the pig pit.
66. Cut a final shot of Hannibal walking away heroically, Clarice in his arms.
67. Shortened Paul’s phone call telling his assistant to hold all his calls. He doesn’t mention the holiday.
68. Added a radio playing a New Year’s celebration broadcast as Paul sees the sparkler going off in his kitchen.
69. Trimmed some moments of the dinner, including some of Paul’s rude comments to Clarice. He’s still rude at dinner, but the point that he’s a “rude person” isn’t beaten like a dead horse.
70. At dinner Hannibal doesn’t say he hates rude people or tell Clarice she should look in a mirror to see incorruptibility. Now he’s being a little more antagonistic toward her.
71. Hannibal doesn’t talk as he’s wheeling Paul back toward the kitchen, and Paul doesn’t croak the word, “coffee.”
72. As he physically restrains Clarice, Hannibal doesn’t say he came halfway around the world to watch her run.
73. Hannibal asks if Clarice would ever ask him to stop but removed the “if you love me” part. She does not reply. The whole interaction is now much creepier.
74. Hannibal does not shed a CG tear before he brings down the cleaver.
75. Cut Clarice chasing Hannibal outside after he flees the Lake house. Hannibal has now cut off her hand, not his own.
76. Added deleted scene of Hannibal getting the van and escaping— to emphasize he is not injured. Added the full VO audio tape of the roller pigeon monologue here, removing reference to Barney.
77. Using shots from the film, Prisoners, created a new scene of an unmarked police car driving at a high speed. We learn Clarice is being rushed to the hospital, but that Hannibal took her hand.
78. Using earlier footage of sleeping in the transport, added grading and VFX so Clarice is in the backseat of the police car and wakes up.
79. The original plane brain scene is mixed with much of the alternate version so that Hannibal’s arm is not in a sling.
80. Added earlier end title, “Dinner With Hannibal.”
81. Removed end scrolling title, “Hannibal.”
82. Stopped your friendly neighborhood cannibal from saying “ta ta… H” after the credits.

The Rise of Skywalker: RESURGENCE (Released)
Time

AspiringCreator said:

Well a little while ago I finished the edit and gave my full honest review.

Thank you so much for the detailed and very fair review. Criticisms I would add to my own edit are some of the audio transitions in the cuts were not smooth enough especially in the monkey elf scene. And an earlier instance of the edit had slightly better editing on the revamped Kylo Dialogue. But unfortunately I did this edit in Premiere and it glitches when saving audio at a granular level and reloading the project.

My hope is someone builds off Ascendant while using my or a similar implementation (idea by idir_hh) of Rey Killed her parents. I’d also like to see others moving the Emperor reveal to later but no one has jumped on that. Hal’s implementation of the Emperor’s broadcast, though, is quite brilliant and I’d be fine with his version of the scene in a “definitive” cut.

The best parts of my edit are probably the improved Rey Vs Ren in TIE Fighter, replacing, new SFX for the cartoony stormtrooper yells, tightening up of the final battle sequences (Finn and Jannah getting rescued) and celebration/hugs afterward.

Glad you appreciated some of the elements. Hope someone else takes some of my ideas and builds something even better!

Daughter of Themyscira (an edit of Wonder Woman 2017) Released
Time

A fanedit in 4K HDR 5.1 channel surround. Runtime 2hr 03m. This edit is in progress and will be released soon as part one of the trilogy of: Daughter of Themyscira (in progress), Son of Krypton (released), and Justice League: Gods of Earth (released).

To inquire about this edit, email krausfadr at gmail dot com and include the word fanedit in the subject line.

intent
Wonder Woman was probably the best DC movie. As outstanding as it was, it’s weakness were:

The narration and tie-in to Batman v Superman felt shoehorned and generic
Poor acting from multiple actors slipped through the editing process
Some parts of the action sequences lacked energy and looked awkward
The slo-mo cinematography was not always up to the level of Snyder’s and sometimes focused on odd elements that didn’t need slo-mo
Steve was comical even in scenes which did not warrant it
Characters which were there mainly for humor, such as Charlie, were far too cartoonish
The dialogue could become a bit heavy on the expository
The storyline in the 3rd act became unfocused
Too much focus was put on Diana’s looks
The intent of this edit is to address these issues to remove or minimize them and for this story to take place only in the past with no narration from Diana.

change list
Moved the story of Zeus and Ares to the beginning. It is no longer visibly being told to young Diana; it’s being told to the audience.
Removed some cringey scenes with young Diana: pretending to fight, running around, jumping off a ledge and being caught by her mother. The storyline and acting took turns being bad.
Rearranged and tightened up the opening scenes of Themyscira and the Amazons training.
No tucking young Diana into bed or reading her the story.
After agreeing to the training, cut the Queen’s comment that Diana must not know how she came to be (left in her comment that Diana must not find out what she is).
Cut an awkward looking moment when Diana is hit in the face while training and then touches her jaw and mimes a weird motion.
Trimmed Menalippe reacting to Diana training and getting the upper hand. Actor, Lisa Loven Kongsli’s performance was iffy (throughout the film it ranged from wooden to awful, she had some pretty bad moments in ZSJL as well).
Added camera motion to parts of Diana’s training action sequences in Themyscira.
After Steve’s plane nosedives into the ocean, and Diana dives into the water, Steve is then already underwater, sinking.
Trimmed Steve initially looking up while underwater.
Removed the German’s line about the fog.
Added camera motion onto parts of the Germans at sea footage.
Steve does not immediately comment on Diana’s looks.
Cut Steve’s line asking Diana, “They have guns, right?” Unnecessary expository.
Trimmed various shots of the battle sequence in Themyscira for stronger action.
Sped up the Amazon swinging as she shoots the arrow.
Sped up the three solders shot at the same time by the Queen. Would have been a nice slo-mo shot but the action looked ridiculous.
Tightened up the interrogation antics. Steve doesn’t shout out, I’m a spy.
Cut Steve’s psychopath line, referring to Dr. Poison.
Cut Steve narrating that when he uncovered the enemies plans he had to do something (show don’t tell).
Trimmed parts of Dr. Poison’s human experimentation for better flow.
Cut Steve grabbing the book.
Cut Steve looking back at the building exploding.
Diana’s nurse doesn’t say “strange” to make sure we notice the healed wound.
Cut Steve laughing at his toe in the bath.
Steve doesn’t ask if he can ask questions. Trimmed some awkward looking around.
When Diana jumps the cliff onto the tower, she doesn’t smile all excited and then slip. On her initial jump she has to grasp the flat concrete.
On the sailboat as Diana and Steve rest, tightened up the scenes and removed Steve’s lines about him having vigor.
Ludendorff does not shoot his subordinate.
Ludendorff does not inhale the new type of gas right after Dr. Poison shows it to him. Also cut subsequent times he took the gas until much later. This let’s us have our doubts about the presence of Ares along with Steve.
Etta does not weirdly watch Steve and Diana walk off down the street.
Tightened up and livened up Diana fighting the men in the alleyway so the action is no longer so brutally sluggish. It’s a lighthearted scene but Diana should still be badass, not a joke.
No comedy routine with Etta coming back to apprehend the bad guy with the sword. No cyanide. The bad guy just slips away as Diana and Steve are distracted.
Diana doesn’t say mustard gas.
When Diana yells at the cowardly General, cut the second time she says that he should be ashamed to add more power to her statement.
Cut Charlie doing the cartoon face after getting punched out in the bar fight, and toned him way down in the bar.
Tightened up Diana’s bar fight. Removed the frightened and aroused joke.
In the bar, cut Etta muttering under her breath, “Sir Patrick” which was clearly a bad voiceover because somebody thought the audience would forget his name after Diana just said it two seconds earlier.
Cut Diana narrating after they arrive by boat near a warzone, “the gas will kill everybody.”
The German commander does not refer to Dr. Poison as Ludendorff’s witch. Cut to tighten his response, not because there was any issue with the line.
Cut Dr. Poison’s expository, saying the mask won’t help, after they start to gas the German commanders, and cut her and Ludendorff laughing.
Ludendorff does not say they have to prepare their demonstration. Added noise of panic and screams as the commanders die from the gas.
Charlie doesn’t dry his crotch over the fire. Chief does not greet Diana as if he is spellbound.
Trimmed Charlie having a fit after waking up from a nightmare.
Trimmed part of storming toward the church so Steve’s team isn’t moving slow and then the music doesn’t have a rough change.
Trimmed Diana staring affectionately after Steve shoots a soldier trying to kill her.
A little less lasso-ing in Veld.
Removed the joke about an island full of women like Diana with no men.
Cut the obstinate woman in the blue dress seeing and speaking with Diana.
Steve doesn’t ask to see Dr. Poison’s work, and trimmed her leaving after he notices Diana.
When Ludendorff dances with Diana he just tells her she knows nothing. Removed part of his line, “of the gods.”
Cut the whole subplot of Ludendorff gassing the village where Wonder Woman cries unconvincingly in the brown smoke about the devastation as we see ZERO dead bodies. Now she just follows Ludendorff.
Cut the odd stylized sideways shot of Diana riding the horse.
Cut Wonder Woman randomly riding past her companions so they can say “hey, this way.”
As Diana rides toward Ludendorff, we see him huffing gas for the first time.
Rearranged and tightened up the fight between Ludendorff and Diana. It’s badass now instead of half-assed.
When Ares shows up cut Diana asking, “who’s there?”
Ares says the sword was not the godkiller but cut him saying to Diana, “You are.”
Ares doesn’t say the “I don’t want to fight you” lines. After Diana declines his offer, he now says, “My dear, Diana…” then he causes the explosion.
Trimmed various parts of the end fights between Diana and Ares, removed Dr. Poison as part of the fight.
Steve and his companions do not watch the Ares boss battle and comment on it.
Ending is now the photograph. Slowed down the zoom out and added in some different music from the soundtrack.
Added “Daughter of Themyscira” to end titles.
Changed music for the rolling credits so there are no vocals.

Zack Snyder's Justice League: Redux Ideas thread

D-A113 said:

it is possible to change your philosophy after some time.

If Zack really did change his philosophy, he did it after he filmed 90+% of the Justice League, because the majority of his footage was clearly shot with the intent to letterbox it, probably to a theatrical 2.39 (same as BvS). The brand new VFX shots were, however, made with the intent for open matte. So his change in philosophy probably had more to do with getting this release out the door quickly than suddenly deciding that 4:3 open matte is the wave of the future. The fact that they put Batman’s voice SFX onto Aquaman by accident shows this was kind of a rush job.

If anyone is still interested in my attempt, I’m not the best editor in terms of manipulation to audio, but I took Luke’s line, “I’m going to burn it all down,” took “burn” and cut off the last part to mix it in with the “th” part in “death of her son.”

I just updated my editing software, and it will take some getting used to. Sorry about that late reply.

This is ingenious. Please share.

On an unrelated note, I was wondering how other people felt about the film’s dedication “For Autumn” with regard to fan edits. On one hand, it might be disrespectful to remove it. But on the other hand, it’s meant to be a message directly from Zack Snyder, so once we as fan editors have altered the movie from what he wanted, one could argue that it would be unethical to leave it in. What are your thoughts?

I kept it in my edit and used an instrumental version of Hallelujah for the end credits. Keep it classy San Diego.
