A more emotional take of “Rey Skywalker”.

Great job!
Sure, when I’m finished, I’ll post it.
EDIT: I’m also thinking about reprocessing the music from A New Hope “The Return Home” to modernize its stereo mix. I don’t like how most of the strings are in the right channel.
Better ending: as Rey holds off the lightning with the sabers, Yoda whispers “the Force is for knowledge and defense.” She drops the sabers, closes her eyes. The lightning makes her stronger. She walks right up and embraces Palpatine. The lightning stops. He loses all his power and becomes a helpless, feeble old man mortally wounded. Rey goes to heal him and he refuses and dies. The Sith cultists commit mass suicide.
jonh I have been completely remixing the audio of this scene. When editors see the audio mix is in stereo they’ll realize they HAVE to remix if they want 5.1. Will use your choice of “The Return Home” string music from A New Hope. Will get some better FX for thunder then from zapsplat.com. Cutting Palpatine’s line about a scavenger girl and cutting Rey’s line “I’m all the Jedi.” Will probably keep Palpatine’s line “Let your death be the final word in the story of Rebellion.” Cutting Palpatine’s dramatic pause before using lightning on Rey (he did the same exact pause when he used lightning on the fleet).
jonh, I’ve been working on incorporating your material into my edit and I just have to say great choices on the music change when Rey gets the saber and the ghosts appear. It works so well what you did. And the little trim you made when Palpatine is on the throne and puts his hands down. Great overall restructuring of the footage, even without the addition of the ghosts!!!
EDIT: Where did you get your thunder sound effect?
That’s well edited! But in terms of plot consistency, if the parents sold Rey to Palpatine, why/how did she remain on Jakku?
She ended up where they sold her on Jakku because Ochi never showed to retrieve her (snake problem).
EDIT: but it might be too convoluted so I might nix it…
Reading through this thread and looking over the results of the TROS poll got me thinking about the idea of having Rey be responsible for her parents death. I know that keeping Rey as Palps granddaughter is a less popular option than Rey Nobody, but if an editor were to have Rey kill her parents I think the Rey Palpatine angle works.
This way we keep Rey’s parents as good people who were doing all they could to protect their daughter, and in a fit of uncontrolled childhood rage, she causes their death. When she accepts the truth of this it would serve to compound the feelings of inner conflict and fear she has regarding her own power

B if the engine glow can be bluer like the TROS Falcon.
EDIT: But if you could put the model for A into the flight and everything else for B. That might be best.
jonh yes this prores 444 looks perfect!!!
I’m using the blue saber version as overall it fits best with this scene’s color scheme, and it matches Luke’s saber. Thanks for making both versions.
And of course it goes without saying, each editor should only use the updated vfx portions from the file and fine tune the audio themselves to their liking. I’ll probably still remove the “I’m all the Jedi” line.
We can all hope for sure.
From a technical standpoint, based on the minimal level of effort Disney has put into the release of earlier films, I would be surprised if they had plans for extended editions across the board. Extending Star Wars Ep 4 would be rather dubious and not yield such good results (we already have limited scene extensions/additions in the Special Editions). As much of a rush as TROS was to release, my guess is the best we would get is some actual deleted scenes, maybe. And the idea they would tinker with the OT to digitally replace Alec Guiness seems a bit far fetched. They will be generating revenue with the Kenobi series and The Mandalorian Season 2-- things like this will probably be their focus.
Oh, ok I’m not really aware of his backstory.
Agreed. Cut the “I am all the Sith!” and “I am all the Jedi!” exchange.
I’m ok with Palpatine saying he’s all the Sith. He’s an a-hole anyway. This is something an a-hole would say. His only line which I found ridiculous, at least in its delivery, was THE JEDI ARE DEAD!
Have Luke force project to the Tosche Station to finally pick up his power converters.
Aw that’s the best submission so far!!!
EDIT: but maybe they are the “Power Converters” from robot chicken star wars?
Snoke, a wise mentor? He looks scary af. I’d let my kid go to him about as often as neverland ranch.
I have tried to export in prores 444, and it seems that there are less bands!
I’ll upload another version soon 😃
fuck yeah! thanks!!!
eres genial amigo!
😃 😃 😃
After jonh’s awesome upgrade, I’m even more inclined to remove “I’m all the Jedi.” He has made it so we can show instead of tell. And as Dom and SWOTFAN25 have now convinced me, the boss battle with lightsabers is the antithesis of Jedi ideals, and her terrible, parroted line back to Palpatine compounds this error.
jonh thanks for the explanation. It’s still a vast improvement because the banding won’t be noticeable to most people. But just to double check, you did use gradient ramp scatter at a higher setting something like 75% and exported at 16 bits per channel, correct?
I think it’s more effective that Ben and his friends start a shady group rather than Ben stumbles across outlaws who can barely use the force. These wimps would never have really fought Ren at the end of TROS; they would have known one force choke and it’s over for them.
Back when I thought the Knights of Ren were some of Luke’s students, I pictured a scenario where the commotion at Ben’s hut led to a scene around the debris, where the other students would gather around to see what happened. Ben would come out in a daze saying Luke tried to kill him…
I thought they were supposed to be his students when I first watched TROS; I was blissfully ignorant of the comics. All I wanted was to see the KoR killing Ren’s enemies with lightsabers.
Is similar banding present in the original shot, too, perhaps?
No these are really completely new shots with the banding. I did check the source TROS, and in the Rey vs Palpatine battle scenes there is no banding present that I could detect.
Change Luke’s line in TLJ to read, “He left with a handful of my [worst] students.”
Lololololol
Jonh I love it and will incorporate it into my edit!!! Thank you!!! I did notice some significant gradient banding in the first few vfx shots of the force ghosts with lightning. The same banding is not present in the final three vfx shots of the ghosts. Depending on the tools/plugins used, I know sometimes banding can be the end result, especially in Premiere and After Effects. If there is a way to reduce the banding I’ll wait for an update, otherwise I’ll use this.
Here is what I mean by “banding”

Thanks again!
RogueLeader thank you for your ideas! They are perfect, just the kind of input I was looking for.
EDIT: and don’t hate yourself.
DOUBLE EDIT: And according to the comics I believe none of the KoR were Jedi students; they were basically an outlaw gang with a leader named Ren who was not Kylo Ren. Just. Plain. Stupid.
I’ll depict them as if they were all students and turned to the dark side under Kylo Ren. I would love for someone to vfx one of them with a lightsaber; but even without that I’m ok with them forsaking the Jedi/Sith traditions, including lightsabers. It makes sense for their gang and is one more wedge between them and Kylo Ren.
“Knowledge and defense” Yoda was certainly a pacifist in his older, wiser years after he was decapitating clones. Though old, wise Ben sliced off a drunk jerk’s arm on his first outing with young Luke. Your point is well taken; Yoda’s words being spoken by Luke would have been a great final lesson for Rey, lay down your weapons and nothing can hurt you when you are one with the Force. Ultimately that’s what Luke did in his final battle: he fought with no actual weapon but with his words.
