Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Intro Revisit

Just following up to see if you ever intergrated this back into the full film and if it is now available for download? Hope you were able to recover the data lost on your drives.
not yet, was hoping to wait for the above mentioned additions. Been moving over to the Starwars trilogy to try and make some headway there. I have recovered files from a year back and working to get back to where I was was the hardware failed. I have original source material, but it has been a challenge to redo a lot so are focusing on that with ESB the one I want to try and get done first

Hey, curious what source did you use for this? It looks good like maybe the WOWOW broadcast or a regrade of the blu ray.

Raiders was taken from the Blu-ray. There hasn’t been any color grading other than the deleted scenes which were color graded to try and match the Blu-ray. The deleted scenes were taken from the best quality I could find and the source would’ve been 2K there are some deleted shots that are really poor quality and they would’ve been Color graded to match the Blu-ray as good as that can get.

Force Awakens Redux Cut (Released)
Time

Watched last night with my wife and I enjoyed this view, but it is quite different when you see it in context (I also watched/listened to the commentary while working first), not sure if that changed my reaction when seeing in full presentation.

using some your summary of edits to help give feedback…

New Opening Crawl:
Never realized how many parts of the original crawl is way off from the film and varies so muc in fan versions. This one ties into your version and what I liked was the focus on what we got. The movie was not about finding luke as much as it was surviving the rise of the first order. I like the way it focused on the new republic kind of becoming what the empire was and the hint that the first order was comprised of ex-new republic folks (not sure if that is canon? but I like the explanation) better than how they came to be more than just a hidden faction of the empire that we didn’t know about for 3 decades.

Film is sequenced differently to feel less like Episode IV: A New Hope:
like this, but not recalling specific scenes, so thats a good thing

Kylo Ren never removes his mask until his Encounter with Han Solo:
I liked it, but it is different because you do not get any character development with Kylo until the end since behind the mask. I get the reason. On the fence on this one as taking off the mask I thought made him different than vader so from a standpoint of being different than new hope I think it might work to take mask off earlier. could go back and forth

All dialogue or scenes from other characters revealing Kylo Ren’s real identity is removed or sequenced differently:
This worked, no reason to know he is solo’s son until the end

New Subtitles have been added.
Liked in some spots other probably not needed (like the desert droid at night with BB-8) I would suggest maybe a different font though to read as sometimes they flew on so fast the current used what hard to read…just a small thing.

New Additional Music has been added throughout especially scenes that never featured any music before:
Liked it, except maybe half as much some spots had too much of the chior thing going on. Don’t get me wrong I love that shadows of the empire soundtrack, just in the battle scenes I would almost opt for non-big choir chorus themed choices --again just a personal preference. Also there is the famous asteroid theme music when you have the falcon used from empire (that one we all love), but used in here there was no falcon…I foget the scene, but it kind of threw me on that choice.

Never before seen footage has been added
like the Ben in the falcon deleted and I think Finn getting healed? One scene I wish other would put in is Solo in the castle basement I know its korny solo dialogue, but I like the non-series side that we just dont see too much in this film. I may be the only one that liked it, but wish it would have stayed in.

Rey’s character and abilities have been altered quite a bit. “No Jedi Mind Trick” The cut does it’s best to humanize her and there are hints that she may possibly be a darksider.:
You have a frame jump/frame rate issue on her scene here, but like the idea. I just wonder if force moving of things is any more “mary sue” than a mind trick? Yes it does make her more a darksider, but that is estlsihed later now w/her lineage since ROS. I would have to watch again and see. I do know in the theatrical the scene was too long, so I like this short and sweet interpretation.

New Footage of Darth Vader is added:
taking a pass on this. That fan work is great but not needed at all in this film

Less is more with Finn. Finn’s character is not a comic relief:
Like all choices here and the same in some spots for Poe

Phasma raises the alarms when she is captured by Han and Finn:
This was done well - liked this

Han is not a Smuggler. NO RATHTARS. NO Kanji Club:
Did not mind that han as an ex-general needs to make some cash somehow. Smuggling is what he was good at and the scene is very swashbuckling so missed the raltars although adding them still would require some edits

New Extended Ending.
If there is any part I would say goes it would be here. Three is nothing wrong to end it as it is, this ending looked like a series of still images in some spots and did not really how a starwars ends. Ending we got (for the story we got) is not the same as new hope ending so if the intent I would say - cut - right there.

Again these are all personal feedback and nothing about the effort as I know this type of endevor take hours of personal time. Great job especially if your first time using software? The attempt is welcome as I know many have wondering what it could be like if not so much a carbon copy of episide IV

thanks again for the share and hard work put into this!

Yes I googled Viva Pro and got a tool by wondersoft that I think was ~160. So yea different tool. Nice to have someone on board that has some really nice tools. Great Job. I recently lost some data on my harddrives and would definately like to a copy of your source/finish when you are ready to share. I would probably adjust the color to match my color grade for rest of ANH, but would love to start with yours as a base…Thanks again for you work on this. Do you plan to also do ESB and ROJ deleted scenes that have some restoration needs?

Actually Viva Pro did most of the heavy lifting.

The full Diamant Film Restoration suite starts at a little over $20k. Dustbuster+ is the cheaper, stripped down version which can be had for just under $7k.

Ouch…pricey…Looked like Viva was more of a editor from the website. I assume there are retoration plugins within not shown that beat out anything from premier and AE which isn’t much as far as full frame scratch and dust removal. If that is the case , Adobe has some catching up to do as you examples looked clean and fantastic!

Since I do this semi-professionally now, I have bought licenses for Viva Pro and Diamant Dustbuster+, both of which were used here, along with After Effects & Photoshop -the new Genrative Fill feature helped fill in some of the larger areas of black scratches - the ones where there are so many scratches they almost form a black rectangle that lasts for a dozen frames or more:

Imgur

At least 4 hours of manual painting, cloning, etc.

Never heard of Diamant Dustbuster+ that must be the magic 😃. It looks like it had many features and tools missing from Adobe in the area of repair, which is the time consuming and challenging part. Should we be scared that they will not list a price? how much is it?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Intro Revisit

Jar Jar Bricks said:

Since this movie doesn’t have deleted scenes, are you planning on slotting this intro in with the rest of the movie as an edit? Or would you prefer to make some other changes in a hypothetical edit?

only other deleted I know of is “another for the granddaughter” and the atlas scenes…the bar scene always has music and talking behind it so waiting for someone to surface with a clean version.

For others…yes I have considered adding subtitles to the german, but I struggle with that as it is not in any other indiana jones to have subtitles. Disnay should have not tried to make it so exclusively german. No disrespect to german speaking…what I may look at is if we can do AI redo of the actors just saying english lines so you can understand. Again I hate to make this the first ever Indy film that has sub titles but I know young Indy had them so maybe?

Right now I lost so hard drives that starwars work on them and depirately trying to recover from that. It’s major so when I do get back to indy it will be after that. I do hope you (who asked for links) to download the new paramount peak intro like it. I think that really helps plus the AI ford voice o correction, but currently I am on star wars recovery at the moment. I do not have a full movie file download for those who want the new intro, but if you have any editing software that can combine two files I would assume you could just add the two clips (intro and rest of movie) together on your own. It is obviously where it stops and i did not change any of the rest of the film. I would reccomend that for now if you want your own version with the new intro.

What are your other ideas beyond the editing of the intro to improve the theatrical release? Too bad there are no deleted scene I am aware of that have been released beyond the cut scene from the trailer.

thanks

honestly not to much to change other than if I can find a “One more for the grand daughter” line at the bar which was a deleted scene from the trailer. Still looking for one that does not fade early to black and have music behind it.

so when I ripped the movie it did not grab the subtitles and/or the MKV may have it buried and the MP4 (required for editing) does not have. It’s funny you bring that up as I was wondering about it during editing and thinking there were some in the theater when I saw it. I have watched 3 times without subtitles and my wife and other friends and they never knew the difference (no other indy film has it for german dialogue) so it was kind of a break from traditon on this film. Not sure why they even tried to do it. Be curious for those that speak German if it was accurate what they are saying.

I may try to see to if I can find the sub titles in my MKV copy and see where (how often it occurs and if needed). I do recall a couple spots where English would have been nice (they actually did German and then ended the sentence in English …weird choice

also I do believe archamedias has subtitles at the end as well and maybe a soldier yelling about the planes being dragons. (not a big deal at the end as helena does so much paraphrasing in English when talking to archameidas it was actually weird in the theater because you saw the subtitles and she was then trying to translate. Not needed there at all, but may I may take a look at the intro and consider…cause I know what your saying. I am big fan of consistency and like I said there are no subtitles in any Indiana jones film ever so kind of hesitant to do. I would be more open to capturing their voice and using Ai to do English over subtitles. Why Disney did not do that is beyond me (I think they spent almost 300M on the film or something like that and yes on the AI ford they should have just done a little more effort I feel to make that work. But luckily we have tools to correct 😃

Thanks for you feedback

I have watched this one as well. Overall, a massive improvement over the original.

  • Eliminating the entire clear scene was the correct decision. However, at about the 17:32 mark you left Indiana telling the FBI he survived a nuclear blast. Other than that, the removal was completely smooth. I could not tell that something was missing.

For others, Note there is a version 6 for this correcting the “Indy mention of surviving a nuclear blast” because in my edit their is no blast/extra detour from the plot scene. What I did was do some editing to let him listen to the guys offscreen and the dialogue moves on without the mention. Thanks to honestabe for finding and calling that out.

For my edit I removed Indy’s mouth movements in this scene so I could just remove the audio instead. Painstaking work, having to manually track his lips to keep them closed, but it’s seamless.

Feel free to steal if you want to.

Yea I may be interested send me a PM with link unless already have. I assume you did a closed mouth and tracked it slightly…yea often I decide if worth it to do as alot of this is “painstaking” when it comes to tweaking with mouths and stuff. Great idea/suggestion…cheers

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Intro Revisit
Time

All in all pretty pleased with this movie, but the intro (which is great) had some things that really stood out for me at least. I have made a re-edit of the intro if anyone is interested in adding to their own copy. The edits that I think really make this thing pretty solid, are as follows:

• Traditional Paramount peak/logo transition added as the intro into a shot from the film and then that small shot not used later as to not duplicate. This was a big one for me, since all Indy films should start this way with that peak blending into some point, mountain tower (whatever). It’s the James Bond gun barrel of the franchise in my opinion. When I saw the Lucasfilm logo attempt to fade to black and then a padlock In the theater, I thought it was a trailer to another movie (was that noticeable for me at least). The padlock is still their of course, we just need a real Indy intro to make it feel authentic.

• Removed the “tick…tick…tick” in the beginning" that did not make any sense and replaced with just fade in bombs and explosions’ in the distance. A good friend pointed out this is probably an artistic way to show passing of time or a “time theme” like he is dreaming it all or something ( does appear to be the same ticking from the clock in New York Bedroom)…but it still feel it is out of place as we don’t get that in intros in other Indy films (intros are all flashbacks that are not a dream or are happening in real-time. (It’s a small edit but fits the mold).

• “1944, France” title added in to be consistent with every other Indy intro that has the date and location. I also added in “New York, 1969”, since the intro moves to this time and it was done for Crusade when “Intro” jumps. The exclusion of these titles were a another big deal for me. We should not have to listen to bonus features to find out the dates. It was such a simple edit that I can not believe got missed. I downloaded the actual font from Raiders that someone had online to use as well for this.

a
a

• Fixed audio sync issues on first shot of Indy and old Harrison voice in some spots so it’s not an 80 year old voice with a ~45 year old Indy. While I did have to do some syncing, the Voice AI credit on 4 lines has to go to a Youtuber “Jason S” who did the voice fix, to which I could not do better even using 11labs(not sure what he used). This really helps I feel. Rest of Indy is fine though - almost like Ford got better at “raising his voice to a higher register” in the shots other than the intro.

-Fixed Indy’s mouth not moving in some spots at the very end of Indy “Come on Baz” “Let’s Go”. It’s very subtle thing but if you look at the original on a decent size screen, his mouth does not move when talking at the end, so tried to at least fix some of it.

• If you have the latest edits of my Indy series they have been edited so the “Lucusfilm LTD etc”) all happen at the same time. This was the case for all films (even Dial) but Temple of doom was off by a few seconds. I have made it all consistent. This shows how much they really wanted these film to be consistent even down to the timing and why I think having the start of these film follow the pattern is so important. Hat’s off to the editors of the original films trying to keep this all consistent. Probably no one else noticed this one though 😃

PM if you want a link to check out the dial intro.

The enhanced FX were a very nice tough. These are things the casual viewer (like me) do not typically notice.

The only noticeable issue I saw around the 23:17 mark during the meal with the shaman. There was a quick and awkward cut when we are shown a shocked look by Indiana Jones for a split second that goes by a bit too quickly. This is really only a minor issue and I would not even bother correcting it unless there are more revisions you had in mind. I also know you were working various other edits that should also take priority.
Thank you again and I greatly appreciate the work you and other editors put into this.

Thank you for your review, kind words and recommendation to others for my TOD edit. I hope you enjoy the others as well. In regards to the Meal with the shaman quick and awkward cut issue, I have identified and corrected it. The issue was a overlaps of two layers of video on the cut that I missed I guess. The cut should go to Willie and then back to the Shamen as he continues his story. latest will be a V4 that I will just replace the current so the link should still work for any who want to re-grab it. I will upload tonight as my upload speeds are slow so I rather just let it run while sleeping. Should be there in the morning.

Thanks again.

I’ve just read your shot list; I was wondering, do you think you might use the deleted scene of General Veers’ AT-AT being destroyed? There is grey, black & white footage of him and the two drivers in the cockpit about to be rammed head-on by a speeder.

Originally had not decided to include due to the scene having so much cartoon/storyboard drawing pieces to it. Colorization has come along way and I do have some very nice practical models of the snow speeders, so maybe I will take another consideration, would probably be in a final V3 though.

Version 1 of Raiders is finally done. I will follow-up on prior PMs for this in a few minutes. If I miss anyone, let me know

A few notes here:

  • I ended up adding some extra shots in the intro that I came across 4 days ago (You can find those in the updated shot list).
  • This version has all the official deleted scenes other than the bar kiss, which I found extra footage as well a few days ago and will finish that scene for inclusion in V2.
  • This version has ~31 of the 47 edits/additions. The other 16 edits are already started and planned out, but I do need to switch gears and get back to ESB-X as a break and to just accomplish something on the StarWars front.
  • Thanks for the interest and support and I hope you all enjoy this release. Happy Holidays/New Year to all.

5.1 English. Have not added additional speaking tracks for deleted scenes in different language nor subtitles, but if you PM me regarding this specifically, I can get you “lines” of what is said in English that are new for you to translate if you want and then maybe you can take it from there to do something? Maybe 20-30 words total.

Honestly it’s not much as far as talking for the extra I believe its only

  1. In the temple helping Sapito up
  2. Encounter with Suzan after class
  3. In the well of the souls
  4. Them in the marketplace (just the Marion saying “Indy come here”)
