I had no idea! This is awesome thanks for this info!
I had no idea! This is awesome thanks for this info!
Does this exist anywhere? Is there any interest in a fan restoration? This is a holy grail of mine that I’d love to help contribute to but it seems that tracking down an original film print may be challenging!
I am curious if any known workprint of T2 exists? I’ve always loved the raw sound effects from the original trailers as they’re punchier and have more impact than what we got in the theater. I figured if a soundtrack like that were to exist it would be on a workprint or some test screener.
Do you think you would be able to contact Alamo Drafthouse and ask if photos of frames from that print could be taken?
Sure I will certainly try. I tried to get a shot of the projectionist’s setup but I barely made it to the movie on time and left immediately after since they were showing a double feature of “Class of 1999” and I had a time constraint to commit to. I will get back to you with what I can find out from the Drafthouse.
I’m not sure of the availability but the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz location in Austin, Texas has the physical 35mm print. It would be a real treat if they let someone review and study it for color and sound detail. It is tough to catch everything in 1 viewing.
So the original print was NOT in fact, as Teal as so many have said? Not so much here maybe, but on other sites where we discuss this. Cuz I have an old german DVD that actually has a very teal color to it. Not so much like the current Region A blu-rays (much more natural, IMO), but many have argued the case that this is why the film was originally teal.
Personally, I want it to look like (and of course, sound like) the way I watched it growing up. So it doesn’t even matter to me.
I noticed plenty of teal during the beginning and flashback scenes. It looked very unnatural but it was there and very noticeable.
Okay, so some of the war scenes looked more cyan, whereas in my regrade they turned out a deeper blue. But other than that, my grade captures the skin tones and color balances well?
How about shots of flames? Do you remember if they had as much yellow as in my grade?
The flames looked just as they did in your regrade. There were some very teal shots in the movie that I am unsure of how they look in other prints but I absolutely noticed teal hues in the war and flashback scenes. I will need to go back and review my notes because there are some other details I picked up on that I am unsure how they look in other releases.
Another detail I picked up on was that when Sarah and Kyle first enter their hideout before he goes out for supplies you can hear the sound effect of flowing water ever so slightly over the soundtrack. Is that sound effect present on home releases?
^Cool, I hope you had a great time! I certainly wish I had access to 35mm screenings like that. 😄
So it appears that the mono on that print was the LaserDisc one as mentioned.
As I mentioned before, I’d like to know how the colors/contrast looked, particularly skin tones for color, and whether or not Arnold’s eyes were visible through his glasses during the “I’ll be back” shot.
Thanks again for helping! 😄
EDIT: Perhaps after trying to remember everything you can about the color, check out my regrade here and see if it matches your memory of the print.
Your regrade looks perfect in my opinion! Those skin tones look spot on. I did not notice Arnold’s eyes showing through the glasses in that particular shot.
Some of the war scenes in the beginning had a very blue hue almost teal like this:

I’m not sure if it’s like that on the other fan regrades but it did stand out.
^I’m not sure what that’s all about, but in the first video you posted, there is no loud sound. It’s very quiet, and sounds like the same thump that occurs in the BD 5.1 mix. The second video sounds almost identical to the first, only it’s very slightly louder and more clangy.
Neither of the sounds presented in those videos are the same sound effect that is present in the original mono presented on LaserDisc (the 2.1 mono source that kk650 included with his release). That mix has a loud clang that is a little more obvious that it’s a dubbed sound effect. It sounds nothing like those videos.
EDIT: Here, I found a youtube clip with that mix:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXf7wj0RiLM&t=46s
EDIT 2: Did you by any chance post the wrong link by mistake? Because the link I just posted matches the description you made of your first link, so maybe you were referring to this video?
I just got back from the 35mm screening that the Alamo Drafthouse had in Austin, Texas earlier today and the sound effect for the door slam sounded exactly like what you just posted above.
Also, the scene where Kyle and Sarah are finishing you see the shot of their hands interlocking and then you hear Arnold’s motorcycle and then it cuts to the frontal closeup of him on the bike. The sound effect of the motorcycle begins before they actually cut to it and that style of sound effect overlay happened a few other times in the movie when scenes were transitioning.
The scene where Arnold leaves his apartment he is in fact wearing boots and you can briefly see them for a moment as soon as he walks out in to the hallway.
Overall it was a beautiful print with only some wear showing through during the reel changes. I’m really glad I got to see this and I’ll try to answer any questions to the best of my memory!
There are 2 mono mixes of the film, and both have a different sound effect for when the door slams open.
What are the differences between the mixes on that sound effect? What am I looking for here?
I’ve noted both requests and will definitely be looking out for those details. I’ll take a picture of the projectionist’s setup if I can!
I’m going to be seeing a rare 35mm print of this tomorrow. Is there anything anyone wants me to take note of during the movie?

So.. a japanese Terminator 2 DVD just arrived. Not the one with the Full Bitrate DTS track, that shall arrive someday in October.
well.. I have to admit: I got that old japanese THX certified DVD release "PIBF-1001" in CD jevel Case... and I wonder if it differs in Color from the US Live DVD. But: The DVD is still sealed! Damn!
I have PIBF-1001 if you need me to check anything out
The Ritz location Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX is showing The Dark Knight in original 35mm this month. Sadly, I won't be able to make it but if anyone is near then go check it out while tickets are still available!
PDB: Everything at the top of post 158 where you graded the film to look like 35mm trailer is spot on. The film print I saw was very red and looked EXACTLY like that. I took a few notes but didn't pay too much attention to writing down a whole lot during the movie. Once I saw that the film matched what's in post 158 I stopped writing.
On a side note, the bass in that movie is absolutely insane! There were a few scenes that just hit me right in the gut. At the end when Ripley walks around in the mech armor the bass just screamed with each step she took. I don't have the DVD or BD of this movie to compare it to but I hope they sound that powerful.
I took a lot of pictures of the movie inside the theater and even some short clips from where I was sitting. I got as much as I could get away with but eventually my phone ran out of memory. I will upload those today and post them here.
edit: Here's a link to some reference material. I wish I could've gotten more but my phone ran out of memory.

Still working on answering some of your questions PDB I'll post back later.
Just got back in town and will work on my report now sorry to keep you guys hanging!
Boy have I got some goodies for you all!
In theater now. The projectionist confirmed it is an original 70mm print with a 6track magnetic audio track.
No problem PDB. I can make note of all your questions and jot down observations like I did with 2001 last month. Looking at your film examples of Aliens I am very much reminded of how the T2 35mm looked. It's almost like Aliens and T2 were color timed at the same time (obviously they weren't though).

Drafthouse is renovating the New Mission theater in San Francisco, I'm hoping we get more filmy goodness to go along with the Castro Theatre!
Oh I'm sure you will. Just keep an eye on the Drafthouse website for your area so you don't miss any good opportunities! Tickets usually sell out immediately online for special showings.

Heads up! I'll be seeing ALIENS on August 1 in 70mm! Anything I should pay attention for? I'm happy to help when possible.
Where the hell do you live?! I mean, you get to see all kinds of awesome movies in original film form! hahaha Wish I could. The theaters around me suck!
The Alamo Drafthouse is an awesome local theater chain that gets a hold of original film prints and shows them very often. They have expanded nationally in the USA but are still pretty small. The one in Austin, Texas called "The Ritz" is famous for showing a lot of films in their original formats. That location only has 2 screens but they're constantly showing good classic movies and they have plush VIP service and reclining balcony seating. It is awesome! Alien and Aliens are 2 of my all-time favorites so I am very hyped for this.
You're lucky. If theaters around me would show these kinds of movies all the time, I'd probably go broke fast! haha
Alien and Aliens are also among some of my favorite films too. Classic.
Which Alien film do you like better overall?
Which better Alien film do I like overall is a very difficult question to answer! I guess if I had a gun pointed at my head I'd say the original Alien. It is hauntingly beautiful. I love James Cameron and he is the sequel master in my opinion and Aliens is just a perfect movie as well. If only more movies were 2 hour action rollercoasters.

Just got out of the BTTF 35mm showing. Story time --->
The show started off with an air guitar contest tuned to the scene where Marty plays at the dance and the winner received a pair of purple Calvin Klein underwear. We all had scratch and sniff cards to go along with the movie as well as glow sticks for the flux capacitor scenes and replica reprints of the "Save the clocktower" newspapers to wave around during those scenes. The scratch cards were very cool... whenever there was fire, hay, or manure you could smell it and the whole theater wreaked of it.
The print itself looked gorgeous for its age with very little wear and tear. I was blown away that it was preserved that well. I spoke with a friend who was hosting it and he did confirm that it was rented from Universal Studios. If I could describe it... it was like the DCP but every shade of color was noticeably darker in tone. I noticed in the opening scene when the toast pops out that it was pretty much all black with almost no brown to be seen. The scene where Doc demonstrates the time machine was synchronized to pyrotechnics that fired in the front of the auditorium when the flame streaks appeared. That alone was probably worth the ticket price.
Suddenly during the reel change before Marty goes to school in 1955 for the first time the movie cuts to the last reel where Doc and Marty are getting ready to drive the Delorean 88 in the storm and the movie is upside down and playing backwards. The crowd got a kick out of it and laughed it off but a few of us knew the projectionist was in a very dark place. We knew there was no way that reel change was getting fixed any time soon and feared the worst. 10 minutes passed and the Blu Ray comes on. The projectionist managed to save the day... the color change was definitely noticeable but I must say that on a screen that size the BD still looked great! I jokingly told my friends that they could've played the old VHS and it still would've been good. BTTF is a perfect movie that doesn't suffer to any format.
Anyways it was a great night after all and I'm glad I got to see at least half the film in 35mm even though that was a bummer. Up next I'll be seeing Jaws 40th anniversary in the water during a special inflatable screen showing followed by Conan later this month.
edit: when the film ended there was no "To be continued" scene before the credits... the Deloran flew at the audience and cut immediately to credits but it was not the 35mm print playing because of the mishap that occurred an hour in to the film. To my understanding the Blurays have the TBC credit don't they? How did that not show up?
Sounds like a fantastic evening! Wish I could have been there. Oh, and no the BD does not have the "To Be Continued...". I have the US and UK BDs and they don't have it. They're both the same transfer.
Good to know the BD is more true to the original film print than the remastered DVDs from the early 2000s. I saw BTTF last summer on an international flight and now I know it was definitely a DVD version since it had the TBC logo at the end. Not to mention I once owned the DVD trilogy that was released in the early 2000s but I didn't know much about cinema transfers at that time and had no idea anyways. I am still partial to the DCP because it looks so clean.

There was no to be continued original because 2 and 3 came out 1989 and 1990 respectively
I was under the impression that all home format 21st century releases had the TBC logo before the credits. I know for sure the DVD has it... unless that was changed for the BD release? I do not own any movie from the trilogy on BD I only have the DCP so I am not totally sure what is to be expected.
