A Palpatine-less Edit of The Rise of Skywalker (Released)
Time

Thanks for the input, Darth Raditz.

The timing of the crawl is slightly off. This was one element I outsourced to another editor who volunteered to create it for me. The crawl came up a few seconds short, so I had to run it at a slightly slower speed which causes it to be a little off. Creating my own crawl isn’t something I’ve attempted.

I felt removing Mustafar reduced the breakneck pacing as I felt we were no longer visiting so many worlds in so short a time at the beginning.

In the Exegol opening, Palpatine’s dialogue was unfortunately in the surround channels rather than just the center as with most dialogue. I reduced it as much as I could and felt what remained was as much ominous background noise as actual dialogue.

I did initially use quick cuts with the fan film, but felt it needed some effect to symbolize that it being in Kylo’s mind.

I kept Pryde and Hux talking about their capture because it hints at Chewie still being alive without showing him to us immediately.

I like your idea for muting Zorii’s line and just having her point her gun at Poe. I hadn’t considered that.

The lines “You sent down the ship,” “find Poe,” and “Finn, we gotta go. It’s Leia,” were all cut together using the individual words from different lines. Unfortunately the only audio editor I have at my disposal is the free Audacity which is fairly limited. It can only manipulate pitch and speed very minimally before it sounds obviously processed. A professional audio editor could do a much better job at bringing the cadences closer together but I’m not about to spend $100 just to clean up a couple lines of dialogue.

I’d have to take a closer look at your sequencing for Kylo sensing Leia’s death.

I thought about cutting the horses as I’m not crazy about them, but they are in the background of too many shots to completely remove them, so without the initial foreground footage, it would just feel weird having horses randomly running around on a Star Destroyer in the background for no reason.

I was planning to create a new version that would have mostly been about improving many of the technical issues you pointed out, but honestly, I have lost interest in trying to salvage this film. I have come to terms with how bad this film is and letting Star Wars take a much reduced role in my life. I really can’t say when or even if I will sit down and work on this project again. For now other projects have taken priority.

Thank you everyone for your help, input, and feedback over the last few years.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed this edit.

The Kylo vs. Vader fan film was an addition requested by a several people. I can see strong reasons both for and against it. I could go either way with it, but it seems most people prefer it included.

The shuttle explosion could definitely be cut, but it has some drawbacks. Namely, it removes Rey’s principle dark side moment which undercuts her belief that she could actually fall to the dark side.

I don’t think I would cut out the entire pre-battle speech. The runtime is already cut down pretty far, and I think that would also add to the frenetic pacing of this movie if it’s just the short montage. I might look at trimming the speech a little more in the next edit, though.

I too felt the ending would flow better with the shots swapped, but all of the other films end with an iris out on a final shot of the heroes, and I didn’t want to break tradition. I’ll probably bite the bullet and swap them in the next version. DaVinci Resolve makes that final iris transition a pain to make too, because it only does the transition the opposite of how it needs to be (closing in from the outside instead of starting in the center and opening out). The workaround is to swap the two transition shots so the second shot is first, set both shots to play in reverse, add the iris transition, link the two shots together, then reverse the linked shot again so it plays and transitions correctly.

WandaVision: The Westview Anomaly (Released)
Time

This was originally part of a full length chronological MCU edit I’ve been working on, but when I recut the first four episodes of WandaVision together, I enjoyed the result so much I decided to pull it out and share it on its own. The basic idea here is most of the real world scenes in Episode 4: We Interrupt This Program have scenes from the first three episodes playing in the background. Those bits in the first three episodes are usually replaced with the respective Episode 4 real world scenes to create a 1 hr 40 min film that plays out similar to the subsequent episodes with the real world and WandaVision stories playing out simultaneously.

It starts with Episode 4 for a while, starting with Monica Rambeau’s un-dusting and playing through until Darcy Lewis requests an old TV. Episode 1 then starts with the TV signal switching on and switches off between Episodes 1 & 4 throughout. Following Episode 1, Episode 4 continues with S.W.O.R.D. identifying the townspeople until Darcy tells Agent Woo she has a plan. From there it switches between Episodes 2, 3, & 4 until Monica is ejected from the Hex and Episodes 3 & 4 are brought to a close. You would then continue to watch the series from Episode 5 on.

This is simply an alternative way to watch these first four episodes in a different way, to provide a different perspective.

Chronological Marvel (No Spiderman Spoilers, Yes Endgame Spoilers) (* unfinished project *)
Time

For what it’s worth, my 60-hour edit is up-to-date with all 23 movies, 5 One-Shots, and 2 canon series (WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) included. I found watching the first four episodes of WandaVision in chronological order to be really cool. Now to wait and see what sort of monkey wrenches Loki throws at this with a time-traveling Loki from the past.

I’ll second that. I followed the old EU for a while, but after so many planet/Star destroying superweapons and Force users becoming so overpowered that you think, man if Obi-Wan or Vader had half this much power in the OT, they would have been completely different movies, I had to give up the nonsense of it all. Not that there weren’t some excellent stories, just so many ridiculous ones too.

Odd. The private topic I started with you isn’t showing in my list of conversations. I tried twice more from my phone this morning, but each time when I refreshed the list, it still wasn’t there. The last two attempts are showing on my computer now though, so you should have the link (twice).

I will admit that the physical abuse was relatively short and minor. However, he also used clear emotional abuse tactics of trying to make her feel isolated and worthless to everyone but him. I respect your opinion. Everyone sees things in their own way. I don’t want to change anyone’s opinions, I’m just letting people know the way I see it and why I decide to include or not include something.

I revisited using “Duel of the Fates” during the DSII duel. I couldn’t get it to my satisfaction in V2, but I was happy with the result this time. So “Duel of the Fates” is in and Samuel Kim’s trailer music is out.

Nobody has offered to help improve the trickier dialogue edits, so I’m calling V3 finished and will have the finished product ready in the next few days.

If anyone could help me with a couple of elements, I would greatly appreciate it.

One is to add a Force glow around Leia in the shot where she calls out to Ben (at about 5 seconds in this clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkOGPyTkLmc&ab_channel=JapTakito)

The others are dialogue editing. If anyone is good at working audio magic with dialogue, let me know. I have a couple of spliced lines I would like to have done better.

I was afraid some of those shots might be a tad long.

The Rey on the throne clip is from Rey’s vision near the beginning of the film while she is training on Ajan Kloss. It’s only a few frames, so I ran it half speed here to give it a little more emphasis.

As far as spoilers go, my edit removes Palpatine so this would be the only instance of Force lightning in the entire film. The only thing being spoiled is the destruction of a Star Destroyer, I think.

Here is a vision sequence I’ve been working on. This happens during the brief Rey vs. Dark Rey duel. It’s meant to further show the pull of the Dark Side on Rey as she sees that succumbing to the Dark Side can enable her to defeat her enemies. I thought I’d share it here in case anyone has suggestions for improvement, alternate clips, etc. Thanks to RogueLeader for the idea.

Having said all of that, I’ll share my opinion.

If Palpatine was going to be brought back, there should have been some context setup in episodes 7 & 8. They didn’t have to foreshadow that he was still alive, but at least name drop him. Have a Resistance officer say something like, “at least the First Order isn’t as bad as when Palpatine kept the galaxy in darkness for 25 years.”

People have used the argument that these movies are meant for kids. Think of this trilogy from the viewpoint of a kid watching as his first Star Wars experience. He doesn’t know Palps was emperor of the galaxy, that he masterminded the destruction of the Jedi and the downfall of the Republic. He’s just some random guy never once mentioned or referenced in the previous two films who is magically pulled out of nowhere to be a bigger bad than Snoke. Luke does mention Darth Sidious once, but there is no context for a kid watching this trilogy first that Sidious and Palpatine are the same, master and apprentice, or completely unrelated characters. The characters all know what a threat he is, but the audience is never meaningfully informed. I consider that bad storytelling.

All of this relentless back and forth doesn’t get us anywhere. It is fine and encouraged to state your opinions, but we’ll rarely, if ever, argue someone to our side. Nothing anyone is saying is wrong, it’s just that different story elements speak to each of us differently based on our own experiences. We have to accept that the story elements that we value most may not be as important to someone else. There is no “true” interpretation of the story or characters, just what they speak to us and our lives. Probably the best we can say is that a better developed and written trilogy might have had fewer offending elements to the fandom in general. Getting off my horse now.
