The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

Interesting. I see X-Wings and Stormtroopers and Darth Vader and that’s plenty for me, haha.

Don’t get me wrong, that stuff gets me fired up too, I just suspect that Rogue One won’t be “shaped” like a traditional Star Wars movie if that makes any sense, at least not as much as the ST. I’m not expecting it to scratch the same itches.

Yeahhhh… not sure I’d be clicking any of those links haha.

In other news, I’m definitely more hyped for Rogue One than I am for Episode VIII. Mostly for nostalgia reasons.

And that’s not to say I’m not super hyped for Episode VIII.

See, I feel the opposite way. My nostalgia’s more focused on VIII, because Luke Skywalker is in it and I’ve been wondering about him for decades. Rogue One’s got all the superficial trappings of nostalgia, but my brain is still registering it as an unknown quantity.

Also, I’d love to hear the argument for reading Catalyst before RO.

I’m about a hundred pages in and I’m still not sure what it’s going to bring to the table in terms of plot-related information, but I can say that I’ve become very invested in the Galen Erso and Orson Krennic characters. I’d recommend it if you’re at all worried about feeling unmoored in this landscape of unfamiliar characters.

I’m still more excited about Rogue One than I’ve been for anything non-SW in longer than I can remember, but yeah, it’s not anywhere near the same level as TFA. I imagine I’ll be losing my mind for VIII this time next year, but even then it won’t be the same. Which is fine and to be expected, given that I spent most of my life wishing for a sequel trilogy that I never believed would happen and then three years obsessively anticipating it. Now that A.) new SW movies are a definite, concrete thing and B.) they’re coming out annually, we’ll just never have that situation again.

Curious how so.

Well I’m still not very far in, but what it seems to be going on is that the plans seen in AOTC were planted to goad the Republic into an arms race. The novel begins a year or so into the Clone Wars, and the Republic is developing its own Death Star project having learned about Dooku’s plans after Poggle the Lesser’s capture (I think this might have happened in TCW, but I don’t remember). So the Republic isn’t actually using those plans, and in fact in this early section of the book they’re not even sure what sort of weapon the Death Star is actually supposed to support (enter Galen Erso and his kyber crystal research). They’re working largely from scratch, trying to avoid a Death Star gap.

Got caught in more rain than my very old wipers could handle on my way to class just now, so I bailed and waited it out in a nearby Barnes & Noble and read the first three chapters of Catalyst. Already they’re doing an admirable job of retconning the Death Star plans’ appearance in AOTC into something that makes sense. I bought the book, I’ll let you folks know what I end up learning about Rogue One when I learn it.

Is a Star Wars movie your favorite movie?

I had that same conversation with someone years ago about Indiana Jones. They grew up with a six hour film, just as you’re pointing out with Star Wars.

You had the same conversation with me right after TFA came out too, and made reference to this same ur-conversation about Indiana Jones 😃

Anyway, the childishness of ROTJ has never really bothered me the way it does a lot of people here. I think it’s fine that there’s a “the goofy one” in this franchise. Look at Planet of the Apes. Those are all over the place in tone, and no one’s angry about them. I’ll admit that it’s not the most dignified ending for the saga, but that’s since become a non-issue.

I get it when it’s folks who were around for the original releases. You (I’m assuming) and I grew up with an OT box set. We first saw them in rapid succession and they’ve always seemed like parts of a whole. I imagine living through a three-year gap between installments gives you a much different perspective. I can definitely see how people might only dig the original, especially since it functions so well as a standalone story.

I’m very much interested in the DNR version, but what I’ve seen of the grainy one looks like I could live with it easily. It’s hard to tell having only seen stuff from the first reel, though. There were swaths of the SSE where the grain was just out of control, IMO, and that really hampered my ability to enjoy it. Authenticity is well and good, but at a certain point it just doesn’t look good when you’re watching it on a screen.

Of course, in the event we get a slick official release for the anniversary, I’m on board for grainy with no reservations.

^Anchorhead doesn’t even care for Empire.

As anyone who’s seen my posts in the “Last movie seen” thread over in Off Topic may have gleaned, I don’t really like to rank the things I like; it’s a joyless process that brings me stress. Movies tend to organize themselves in my mind in a kind of loose tier system, and SW and ESB are in the very top tier. TFA and ROTJ have lower but still very respectable positions as well. I don’t feel any need to get more specific than that.

I would obviously inderstand, though, if the unaltered version was the only other thing included.

This last was all I meant. I’d love to see the 97 included, I just suspect it’s so niche that it won’t be bothered with unless they go the Blade Runner route and make a point of being comprehensive. What I actually expect is a (hopefully) remastered 2011 packaged with the OUT.

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

Started putting together my set. Waiting on some responses to a couple of PMs about alternate art before I print the other two, but here’s ESB. Lighting is terrible, but eh. Thanks to JMoomer and SteveE.

Probably going to redo the cover on thicker stock since the painting on the inside bleeds through to the front.

EDIT: It seems I need to clarify: when I said I was putting together “my” set, I just meant my particular discs that are going on my shelf. None of these are my designs; they were created by JMoomer and SteveE and posted a few pages earlier in the thread. I only posted photos because I thought folks might like to see what it looks like all put together.

As long as we get the OUT, I’m fine with and even curious about potential new iterations of the SE.

Same here. It’s important to point out though, that even though the '97SE didn’t come out on DVD, it did get a wide theatrical release and my generation did grow up with it on VHS, so there is definitely some nostalgia for it and nostalgia is very much the wave Disney is surfing right now.

Oh definitely, my earliest actual memory of Star Wars was the theatrical release of the SE when I was seven years old (though I know I watched the Faces tapes a year or two before), and I wore out that set of SE tapes. I just meant that there’s got to be significantly fewer folks who are very interested in that version because it was the standard version for such a relatively short amount of time. Moreover, unlike the small tweaks between the 2004 and 2011 versions, the 2004 cut actually retconned aspects of the 1997 one, so it exists in this weird limbo of being obsolete in terms of continuity without any of the purist virtues of being original. I’d definitely like to watch it if it was included in a 40th anniversary set for nostalgia’s sake, but the truth is I don’t think I’ve felt strongly enough about it to watch the 97 all the way through since the 04 came out (I have watched selected scenes from your Respecialized and Team Blu’s upscale a few times, though).
