4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I don’t see much reason for restoring the 97 SE. The fact that they never made it to DVD means very few people truly “grew up with them”, and I wouldn’t be surprised if many of the folks who prefer the SE don’t care or even realize that the 97 cut is different. It’s an interesting curiosity for obsessive completists like many of the denizens of this site as a sort of transitional specimen between the Star Wars that was and the Star Wars that is, but if you’re not one of the relative few who are really interested in the evolution of the film, I’m betting you want either the theatrical cuts or else the canonical ones.

NOTE: None of this is to say I wouldn’t like to see the 97 included in some kind of ultimate comprehensive box set. Sure, if they’re doing it anyway I’ll take it. It’s just extremely low on my list of priorities. Hell, I think I’d prefer it if they fixed some of the CGI in the SE rather than reverting it to an earlier version. As long as we get the OUT, I’m fine with and even curious about potential new iterations of the SE.

<strong>STAR WARS: REBELS</strong> (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

I thought the episode was meh, but maybe now with some of the Mandalorians aligning with the Rebellion they may become more interesting for me. A big part of why I just can’t seem to care about them is that they feel kind of separate from everything else. It’s always Mandalorians quarreling with other Mandalorians for control of Mandalore, and as soon as our heroes leave their system it completely ceases to matter. If they become actual players in the galaxy, I might not find them so tiresome.

The whole proud warrior culture thing just doesn’t do it for me. The only thing I found compelling about the Mandalore stuff in TCW was the Satine/Kenobi romance, and with neither of those characters in the mix on Rebels I just don’t feel very invested. Bo-Katan was kind of cool too, I guess, and I’m assuming she’s in this episode because I saw headlines a while ago about Katee Sackhoff returning, so that’s neat. I absolutely despised everything to do with Pre Vizla, though, so I can do without more Death Watch fallout.

Star Wars Despecialized Editions - Custom Bluray Set (Released)
Time

Would anyone mind whipping up a quick disc label for the ANH documentaries to go with JMoomer’s/SteveE’s set? SteveE skipped ANH because JMoomer had already done it, but JMoomer omitted the documentaries in favor of Revisited. I finally got my hands on a functional printer that can do discs, so I’d like to start putting this set together soon.

One of the questions in grading a print scan, is whether to correctly represent what’s seen on a print, or whether to reduce saturation and contrast to conform to the expectations of a home video release. In this case I opted for the former, but I’m open to suggestions…

Would it make sense to tone down the saturation and contrast on the denoised version and keep the full-blown technicolor look on the one with the natural grain? It seems like we’ve got a perfect opportunity here to have it both ways.

The Sundered Heart was first introduced in the 2006 game Star Wars: Empire at War, as a hero unit for the Rebel Alliance. In 2010, Leland Chee confirmed a retcon that Bail Organa’s ship from Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith was indeed the Sundered Heart, and not the Tantive IV, as was previously established.

Source of the sample videos on starwars.com?
Time

Finally got a chance to look at this on a computer rather than a phone, and it really does look significantly different. CHEWBAKAspelledwrong’s point about the sand people attack scene has reminded me of those claims someone (Devin Faraci I think?) made last year about a new cut of the SE with Han shooting first being in the works. Could this be that? If it is and they are indeed rolling back certain changes for the next SE release, I would have hoped they’d nix the 2011 rocks.

EDIT: one of the starwars.com clips that I watched to check this out was Ben and Luke in the hut on Tatooine. I just watched an EW video that happened to include a few shots from that scene from the blu-ray, and it’s pretty night and day.

I don’t think the idea of a color grading project with the goal of improving consistency across the saga is necessarily terrible. I don’t really see the point of something like that for the OUT, but it would make a certain amount of sense to do up the SE that way. It would be completely wrongheaded for this particular project, but I don’t think it’s a patently ridiculous notion in general.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * <strong><em>SPOILER THREAD</em></strong> *
Time

I’d really like to see the “Luke & Leia” theme from ROTJ dusted off for their inevitable reunion, the way we got a handful of instances of the love theme from ESB in TFA. It would be a nice consolation for the sad fact that we’re not likely to hear that love theme ever again.

It would be pointless to put out a new transfer this late in the game unless it’s being released day and date on 4k UHD. Even then, they’d need to throw in the unaltereds for people to actually care.

The fact that they just put out the new steelbooks and the digital HD last year make me think you’re probably right, but that 2011 blu ray really is bad enough to warrant a remaster of its own. If a few years had gone by without a repackaging, I don’t think it would have been surprising or inappropriate to give the SE an overhaul, regardless of the status of the OUT.

Although I could still see the scenario of a new SE without an OUT playing out if they do a theatrical rerelease for the anniversary next spring. That would be a reason for them to be prepping a 4K version, and they’d be able to refer to it as “remastered” which would probably get more asses in the seats. Then at Christmas, they put out some sort of nifty box set of either the OT or the entire saga using the new masters.
