 To the best of my knowledge, until the 16mm/35mm (not sure which one) preservation gets completed, yes the Brer' edition is the best one and yes it is sourced from the BBC airing that was capped by Mentor back in 2006 (if I remember correctly as far as year is concerned)

 That depends on whether they were transferred correctly to PAL (where there is an actual PAL speed-up) which is not always the case. Someone would have to check run-times and see if they match with NTSC or PAL speed. A good reference are VHS rips from NTSC to give you an approximate, correct, run-time.

@ Molly - I WISH they had been telecined as I could have fixed those too but unfortunately they ARE blended. However, even with that being said, they are still of WAYYYY higher quality (especially once I fix as much damage as possible) than the crappy xvid vhs release which are all between 800-1200kbps video bitrate ;)

I'm working on syncing audio to one of the episodes right now and it's interesting to see how the audio speed is SOOO inconsistent when sourced from VHS compared to straight digital source. Even the differences is audio speed between the different languages sourced from different VHS tapes makes for a fun challenge to sync up properly. Now, granted, I will NOT be able to sync them all down to the millisecond (as that's impossible) but they are all in-sync within a +/-20ms tolerance which is close enough and not noticeable to the naked eye, especially in an older cartoon :)

According to Andrea, it's going to be a while before "version 2.0" is released so there is no rush, but I did want to let everyone know that I have not abandoned this project, but just put it on hold until the other one is finished.

And, for now, I am still "sitting on" the numerous other language tracks for the "audiophile edition" but they WILL be released once "version 2.0" is completed by Andrea.

@ kaarma33 - Where the Ducktales movie is concerned, there is a 4.38GB 720p HDTVrip available on rutracker (which suffers from PAL speed-up) capped from disney cinemagic HD in France (as it has the title of movie in English and French) however the release only contains English and Russian audio. It contains the Disney logo in bottom left-hand corner and looks to be a straight to digital (no film in-between) transfer, which IMHO looks to be a little too DNR'ed (but it just might be me, LOL) still, it's better than the DVD. There is also an itunes 1080p 3.5GB rip floating around in proper NTSC speed and looks to be a film transfer. Personally, I think the 1080p copy, even though it has a lower video bitrate, is a much better transfer but this copy is extremely hard to find (took me over 4 months of searching in Eastern European forums to find it after a friend told me that it's out there) According to the metadata, the itunes copy was ripped in January of 2013. If you, or anyone else, would like to find this copy, please PM me for details as I've been asked not to post publicly.

Alright, now that I've addressed that, I would just like to say "WOW!" and "Thank you" to the HUGE response that this project has gotten. I'm surprised how many people have commented already and how many people have viewed this thread already. I can't wait for this to be finished. Not only because so many would love to see this, but my kids and I would like to see this as well. However I will not compromise my process (and therefore quality) to get this done sooner. I am very disappointed with Disney and many others for what they have (or haven't) done with some of these great shows from the 80s. If they even get released, they are usually of poor quality and are usually incomplete. We have seen this with other shows, from Nickelodeon, from the 80s as well. David the Gnome (which a fan restored from VHS recordings) and Maya the Bee (partially restored by fan from VHS as well, but still incomplete) are great examples of others from the 80s that have gotten the shaft. WHAT THE F*CK is wrong with our generation? All of us, that grew up on the 80s cartoons are now adults (some of which I'm sure are involved with Disney, Nickelodeon, or others) should be doing more to preserve "our" stuff! That's a big part of the reason that I took it upon myself to do this preservation project for Winnie the Pooh series. It's something that SHOULD BE DONE, not JUST for this, but for all other shows of that era. I guess that's why I love this forum so much and the people involved in it: we all see the need and purpose in preserving these wonderful "things of the past" ;) and IMHO, a lot of the "old stuff" is WAAAAAAAY better than some of the "new school" crap (pardon my French, LOL) that is released now-a-days.

As far as updates are concerned on progress, I am now on episode 14 of season 1, where the last few episodes have been more of a pain to work on because they were incorrectly transferred from NTSC to PAL (where the PAL copy does NOT have the PAL speed-up) so there are LOTS of garbage frames due to frame blending and with every episode being around 30000 frames (excluding intro and end credits) that's a LOT of correcting. But never fear, for I am stubborn and will make this project see the light of day as I will not give up until it's complete. 

Once again, thanx to all for the support of this project and I can't wait to share once it's completed. Peace

@ Laserschwert - the German audio will be included for (almost) ALL episodes (it took a minute to track down, but I managed to find them except for the Winnie the Pooh and Xmas too special - more on that further down)

@ jade88 - You and everyone else that will appreciate this once it's complete are VERY welcome. It is a damn shame that Disney is letting this great show just sit somewhere on the shelves instead of releasing it (even just on DVD)
You are welcome to ramble as much as you want ;) I am always interested in other peoples opinions about these things. That being said, I am wondering what you mean by "individual" files, as in whether you mean each episode will be separate torrent or actual individual files for each episode. If it's the latter, then yes, each episode (in its original broadcast format) will be it's own file with AVC video in a M2TS container (and as stated above, will contain properly synced audio for English, Polish, German, and Russian) If there is anyone out there that has audio in another language (and would be willing to share or point me in the right direction) I would be happy to sync it as well. So far, I haven't been able to find anything in other languages other than the intro song that's posted on youtube.

@ ExNihilo - After this project is finished, if I can find decent video source files, I might undertake the Gummi Bears as well, but that won't be for a while, as I am working on 3 other projects besides this one right now, have two small daughters and just can't find enough time to do everything right away and my computer can only process everything so fast, LOL.

Now that all that is out the way, I would like to post a slight "update"/comment on some of the effort I'm putting into this.
This is a very fun project to work on, especially with my daughters (ages 4 & 2) watching as I fix a cartoon they love to watch. However, it's also a little bit of a pain having to mix different sources and try to make it all look proper (in many case having to correct the video ONE frame at a time) There are numerous garbage frames in many of the episodes due to incorrect transfer from NTSC to PAL and cleaning those up is not hard, but extremely time consuming. Also, since I'm syncing not one but four language tracks to the video is also challenging at times, as the audio sources for MOST of the episodes (except for about half the English episodes which are sourced from PAL DVD releases) is from VHS tapes and the speed of the audio there is NEVER constant so I'm playing some audio tricks to sync it without it being obvious that those tricks are present. So far, it hasn't been difficult (as I have been editing audio for over a decade) but it is ALSO very time consuming. Especially since I'm having to slow down the PAL audio back to NTSC (as I want to preserve the original broadcast format) ALL episodes will now have an intro, the English title cards, and (mostly) original end credits (reason for mostly is that some episodes will have a 2-second Russian end credit "page" after original English credits where cutting that Russian "page" would throw the audio out of sync at the very end (last 3-4 seconds of video) and the "episodes" where there was an "A" and "B" episode in one ( to fill in the 30 minute time slot) will be preserved as aired originally which makes each "episode" ~22:30 including intro/end credits. (This was the only way to do it so I could also preserve all of the end credits as aired originally) The release will also contain the Xmas special "Winnie the Pooh and Xmas too" (mostly sourced from DVD) but I am having problems finding German and Russian audio for that episode ONLY. If there is anyone that could help me with the audio sources for that episode (in German or Russian) I would greatly appreciate it.

I'm using the AVC codec in an M2TS container, where there will be 5 audio tracks (lossless and lossy English, lossy German, lossy Polish, and lossy Russian) and thought of using FLAC for the audio instead of WAV, but am wondering about compatibility for most people. Also wondering if including a lossy English is just redundant... On the other hand, anyone that would want to remux it (excluding audio they don't want/need) could just do that. Thoughts?

Side note: All of the source videos have a frame size of either 704x576 or 720x576 (except for some of the title cards and some of the end credits which come, mostly, from a 640x480 source)and I am encoding all of them at a frame size of 720x540.

Second side note: Should I release this just in my "master" format or should I do a DVD release too? And should this, once it's completed, be a "private" torrent on the spleen or a "public" torrent on tpb? Or maybe release the "master" on the spleen and the DVD release on tpb? I don't know, kinda "brainstorming" here... lol...

Ok, so first of all, if this should NOT be posted here I want to apologize and make sure that I’m not trying to violate any rules on this forum as this is a Disney production that is the topic. That being said, I would like to post some thoughts, things I’m doing towards this coming together and (hopefully) get some feedback on the topic.

It has come to my attention that almost all of the cartoons I watched in the late 80s and early 90s, as a kid, have been released in some digital format (usually, at least, DVDs) but one of my favorites (aside from the Maya the Bee series that aired on Nickelodeon), the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh has never been released. Granted, some of the episodes have had releases as part of other Disney DVD media, but the entire (with original intro) series has NEVER been released. There is a horrible quality xvid torrent floating around of the series, BUT most episodes are VHSrips and all are at very low bitrates.

I know that the series has been popular in many other countries as well, so I started looking for other video sources (regardless of what language they were in) that were of better quality. I found some German and Polish releases, but they were both low quality as well (in some episodes even worse than the English release) and then…

FINALLY, on rutracker, I found a 70GB release of the entire series containing PAL DVD-remuxed episodes and PAL DVB mpeg-2 episodes, all with bitrates between 3800kbps and 8000kbps. Unfortunately, over half of them are in Russian ONLY, are all PAL, and are all interlaced.

So, I am in the process of putting them all together now. I de-interlaced them all properly, slowed them back down to NTSC from 25fps to 23.976fps and am now putting them all together with the original intro, original title cards (most sourced from the English xvid release), all in English, also with all original end credits. Since I have these in four languages (English, German, Polish, and Russian) I am also syncing all sound tracks to the NTSC speed encodes. Converted all of the episodes to AVC at max bitrate of 9000kbps to ensure highest quality, at least for my masters, and am keeping the English tracks in WAV format as to not degrade the sound more by encoding lossy tracks back into lossy.

I started this project about six weeks ago and it will take me, at least, six more weeks to finish this whole thing. The reason it’s taking so long, as some episodes are converted from NTSC to PAL incorrectly and there is some damaged/garbage frames (due to frame blending) that I have to fix. Fortunately it’s not that hard, as those Disney cartoons had lots of duplicate frames, but it is time consuming. Once it’s done, I’m wondering if I should release these in the format I will have for my “masters” (which will make a ~90GB release) or if I should make these into a proper (for the first time) DVD release of the entire thing…

CSI: Miami FanEDIT 2014 Shadoe

All rite ladies and germs, bare with me here as, this is my first fanedit and
I’ll try to include as much info as possible without it being overwhelming.

I guess I should start with how this project manifested into reality.
A few months ago I was looking for info relating to an old Matrix screener from
back in the day, and somehow ended up here at OT. I have seen some fanedits
that are posted on fanedit.org, including a great LOST mini-series Fanedit,
and then started browsing through the things that people have worked on here
on OT. “WoW!” was my initial thought. I ended up starting some work on another
project on here (for the matrix isolated score) and while waiting on my computer
to encode various things for that project I started a CSI: Miami marathon on
netflix (I own the DVD’s but netflix has the series in HD so I watched it on
my ps3) There were a lot of things that I hated about the show, being a “Grissom”
fan from the original series, CSI: Miami seemed a little too tits&ass, weak story,
and Carusso over-acting. However, I stuck with it (for lack of anything else I
wanted to watch) and as the seasons went along the show started growing on me,
even with all its flaws. Then, I got to season 6, where the story started
getting interesting as they threw in a “long-lost” son, Kyle, for Horatio to
“discover” which leads to the eventual meeting of the mother of the boy and then
the story spirals… In a good way actually, as there is a husband for the mother
that, of course, is a criminal and major part of the plot for many episode
going until the end of season 7. however, the story involving the son, Kyle,
continues in season 8 and then there’s a cameo almost at the end of the last
(10th) season. So, I decided to take those main characters and story involved
there and attempt to make it into a movie. With the focus of the story I’m going
for, Carusso over-acting at times is actually needed for the plot and makes sense
so I could tone that down a little as well, plus focus on the son.
Unfortunately I possessed only the DVD and was not going to make a low-quality
copy for such a big project. using hdtv rips is out of the question, not just
because of the piracy issue(which is questionable as I do own the DVD, but that’s
beside the point) but all of those have watermarked logos of different tv stations
and are usually only 2.0 ac3 @192kbps-320kbps(depending on episode) so those
would be useless. I searched online for legitimate bluray release and was pissed
to find that the seasons I needed (6,7,8,10) have no bluray release here in the US.
So, I started looking for something I could import and finally, after some searching,
tracked them down in different countries (all Region B,which isn’t a problem but
still they were Region B locked). Season 6 came from Sweden and has a video bitrate
of ~12000kbps and stated DTS HDMA on the box but actually only contains a lossy
5.1 ac3 @640kbps 😦 still better than DVD though. Seasons 7 and 8 came from Germany
and and have a video bitrate of ~13500kbps and actual DTS HDMA in German and English
so that was sweet. And season 10 came from France and has a video bitrate of ~13000kbps
and actual DTS HDMA in French but only 5.1 ac3 @448kbps for English which really
didn’t matter as I only needed about 40 seconds of footage from one episode and
only 30 seconds of that audio is used.

Once I got all the episodes onto my computer and selected them all, I realized
that I have 830 minutes (including the intro’s and credits for each episode) worth
of material to go through. Plus, I needed to make a fanedit disclaimer and some kind
of intro or something. This is my first such project so I looked at the formats that
certain other projects have been done to give me a little bit of an idea how to
approach this. So I grabed a notebook and a pen and started writing down a list of all
episodes that need to be included (using Kyle, Horatio’s son, as a refference, as I
wanted to make the story surrounding those two and everone they encounter together
along the way) with their running times. Ran through all of them and made some editing
notes for myself for each one and realized that there is NO way that I will be able
to edit that whole story into one movie. If I tried to cut more, the story would
stop making sense and there would be huge gaps so I needed to re-work this whole
idea. I noticed that season 6 ends on a “big-bang” and decided that would be a great
ending point for the first movie and then I could make a second part that contains
everything from all the other seasons (as there are more episode there, but less
footage that pertained to the story-line I was going after). As a result, I titled
the first movie “CSI: Miami Troubled Son” (which has a double-edged meaning as it
reffers to Kyle being a troubled son but Horatio also being a trouble Miami “son”)
and the second movie is titled “CSI: Miami Revived Son” (which is also a double
meaning metafor for both of them being “revived” through-out the course of the film)

To do the editing, I used sony vegas pro 11 and opted to do the sound in 5.1 importing
it all in a wave format (since vegas won’t read dts natively) and then encoded the
sound into DTS HDMA to preserve best sound possible as not all of it was sourced from
a lossless encode. Now, I won’t post ALL the edits done (as there was over 50 pages of
timecodes that were edited that I wrote down and that’s too much to type up here and
really would just bore all of you to death, LOL 😉

However, I will give some overall stats of cuts. There are many places where I cut out
entire sections of story because it had nothing to do with this plot and I tried to make
sure that when something else was refferenced there was some kind of explanation how
this ties with the story I am presenting. There are many subtle cuts to dialgoue to
exclude parts to are irrelevant to the story, the relationship between calleigh and the
atf agent is only slightly hinted at but mostly cut, as is the relationship later on
between eric and calleigh and only hinted at in one brief scene. I also had to crop any
of the intro credits from any episode after the first used for each movie, so it takes
away from the “episode” feeling. Tried to use similar transitions to those used on the
show for consistecy (the “flash” dissolve, cross-effect, slide, etc.)
The list of episodes used and their original total time, as well as the amount of
time cut from each episode is as follows:

For first movie - “CSI: Miami Troubled Son”
s06e01-dangerous son-42:47(~10minutes cut)
s06e03-inside out-44:08(~16minutes cut)
s06e07-chain reaction-43:56(~28minutes cut)
s06e13-raising caine-42:52(~20minutes cut)

for a total original time of ~306minutes and
the new total runtime is 154:32 for part I

For second movie - “CSI: Miami Revived Son”

s07e17-divorce party-44:07(~33minutes cut)
s07e18-flight risk-42:36(~40minutes cut)

When it comes to specs, I encoded the video using the AVC codec into a M2Ts container at
a frame size of 1280x720 (as the blurays are not 1080p but only 720p) at a target bitrate
of ~10000kbps and actual came out to ~9500kbps. I exported the audio in wav and then encoded
it into DTS HDMA using the 5.1 audio. I also downmixed the audio (using foobar2000) to stero
and encoded a DTS HDMA using the 2.0 audio. Also, using foobar2000, I encoded a lossy ac3
only for the stereo sound as vegas already encoded a 5.1 ac3 when it encoded the video.

So both releases are 14GB EACH and have
Video: 1280x720@23.976fps@~9500kbps
Audio 1: DTS-HDMA 5.1 @~2350kbps
Audio 2: DTS-HDMA 2.0 @~1100kbps
Audio 3: AC3 5.1 @448kbps
Audio 4: AC3 2.0 @384kbps
in an MKV container

Once I watched this with some neighbors on a 46" HDTV with a proper 7.1 sound set-up,
the expereince was a pleasure. I do have to state, for the “record,” that this is not
completely flawless, as there were certain parts where the material to make a smooth
transition was just not there. I am refereing to the audio ONLY, as the video was much
easier to manipulate, but the audio at times is smooth and no one could tell that I spliced
it and at times is a little more obvious. There were also some macro-blocking issues in
certain scenes where the video moves extremly fast. It doesn’t happend often but we all
noticed it a couple of times. When I looked at my source videos, they had issues there too
so the problem wasn’t with my encode. Overall, my neighbors enjoyed both movies over the course
of two nights and now I have decided to be brave enough to release this to the scrutiny
of others. I hope y’all are interested and that you will enjoy these and I welcome any and
all comments as I could really use the feedback on whether this was a waste of time or not,
LOL

Well, it's been a couple of weeks and I never heard from that person on youtube. Damn shame :( On the bright side, I have attained two "new" (they are to me) copies of the movie, which I had some questions about. Whenever there are references to sources for the movie there is always mention of the Japanese releases (both VHS and LD) and then to the UK PAL VHS tape, however there is never any mention of the other VHS releases. I have discovered that the movie was also released in German, Italian, Spanish, and French (this one is of particular interest to me as it's NOT a PAL transfer.)

After much searching all over the internet, I have acquired VHSrips of the German PAL VHS release (circa 1991 like the UK release) which is in a very nice 1.8GB xvid file and a French SECAM VHS release (circa 1981) which is in an ok 1.2GB mp4 file.

I don't speak either language, but was curious to see if the transfer suffered from the same issues as the UK VHS release. Does anyone know whether the German release used the same video as the UK release? I am leaning towards yes, due to the fact that most of the title cards are still in English in beginning of movie (where the cast names are, as I'll illustrate in screencaps below) However, what about the French release. It's NOT PAL, but SECAM, so whole different transfer process (was the SECAM copy from the UK PAL transfer or from original NTSC transfer?) I am wondering if the French SECAM VHS might be a good frame reference and am willing to share these two releases with anyone that wants them (just shoot me a PM)

3) Entire "book" with title of movie title card (looks like they got lazy on the German release as the whole bottom half is missing, unlike the French release)

I really think that the German release might be using same transfer as the UK release, but that French one might be promising for a copy with a proper transfer. Anyone have any input on this please?

It is indeed a legitimate release. I worked in a local video store back in the day that actually rented it as well as the Japanese laserdisc.

The labels and cover in the photos do not look like copies and it has the custom clamshell case used with many Disney Japanese VHS releases.

Claims to be a rare NTSC VHS screening copy. The quality looks fairly good (considering it's VHS).

 First of all, thanx to everyone's input on that copy of the movie. I have decided that it in fact was too much for the movie.

The reason I am quoting that message is the youtube video there. WOW!!! If its real, then WOW. Am doing research to see if there is any reference online to that copy anywhere else and haven't found anything yet and will continue to look. However, I have sent a message to the poster, asking him/her if there is any possibility of sharing a rip of the tape for reference. Explained and linked this thread a little bit in the message stating I am not part of the project but merely an observer which was wondering if that copy could be shared for reference. Would be great to have it (assuming that there are no issues with the copy) as opposed to the PAL vhs tape or the any of the LD releases. Ah, there were issues with the BBC transfer as well, so this would be a great reference. If I hear anything, I will post updates here ;)

Perhaps one of you involved in the project would also like to contact said poster to give my message more validity and hopefully a chance at seeing that amazing tape (looked nice on youtube) ;)

 I'm just wondering if $400 is worth it, that is a pretty penny and am wondering if I should hold off until the 35mm or 16mm is scanned. that's assuming that project is still alive. and it is only a vhs tape so I don't know

are there any versions out there (aside from possibly this vhs tape) that do not have the field-blended pal conversion problems? because it's my understanding that the japanese ld had some kind of problems and so did the pal vhs tape and the hong kong ld (think that was an unofficial release)

this is a work in progress and I can re-insert the parts needed (if I have to) from the Dolby TrueHD track as I have that one as well... will NOT attempt to do this until after I have gotten some feedback on how it sounds so far, because most (about 98% of the reconstructed score) is from lossless FLAC files that I had explained in one of my earlier posts concerning this score project for the spoRv version 2.0

although, thanx for pointing out that Cinema DTS is lossy, as for some reason this piece of information was unknown to me ;)

Sorry that I haven't posted on here sooner but I have been really busy these last few days (my wife and daughters had all caught a nasty stomach virus and I was the only one not sick and had to help take care of them all)
Anyway, they are better now and I had some time to resume this project.
Thanx for the warm welcome Andrea ;) Would love to come to Italy again, if I could only afford it (LOL)
Looking forward to your results with the video... wondering if you are waiting for the 35mm project on AMPS to finish first, (to use as a reference for color-not sure if you've seen the sample screens there, but the overall tone is a lot warmer)
anyway, just curious... either way, even with the artifacts in version 1.0, your restoration of the color timing produced some remarkable results. if you ever need any feedback on your "in-progress" results always welcome to be a help for you.

ok, as far as the work on that score track. I re-watched the entire thing with a notepad and pencil in hand to write down all the timecodes of places I needed to address. Just to be thorough, I made sure it was the ENTIRE movie. This was must first such project and it's funny to see how I learned (pretty quickly) how to put this together with this track because there were some mistakes in the first hour of the movie and after that everything was fine. I had to fix a transition from one track to another at ~32:30 and again (extending ending of one to match with beginning of next) at ~35:40. Once again, I had to re-align a couple tracks transition at 57:13 (the transition from lady in red dress to agent smith) where the volume was inconsistent between tracks making the transition obvious (this had now been fixed) after this, there aren't really any other places that needed to be addressed. I even made sure by listening to audio commentary track 5 in left channel while my score track plays from right channel to see if the line up this way as well (sometimes comparing just the waveform is not sufficient enough) sounded good...
now had to go back to the trickiest one. all of these edits (once I re-watched the movie) took me about 45 minutes and only a single-pass edit/mix/re-render session BUT this last one took me 4 (YES, a total of four) night session, each about 3 hours long once everybody was sleeping before I took a nap. The transition, from dragula to next track by prodigy was a pain in the a**. it's at ~10:20 and I went through it with about 19 different edits before the 20th one finally sounded as good as it's going to get. ( I had listened to all 20 version to make sure and honestly got tired of that part of the soundtrack) the huge problem here was that the dragula track is lossless off the OST and was easy to mix in pretty straight forward, whereas the prodigy track was such a mix that it was almost impossible to mix without it sounding funky. there were just certain parts that were missing and flashing between lossless and lossy on this track was just obvious as hell and sounded like complete crap. It was extremely frustrating. I then looked at channel 01+02 of the cinema DTS track and there is ambience noise mixed with the music which makes the track useless even though it lossless. again, seemed like a dead end. Finally I opted to use a combination of the lossy (OH, NO, I know LOL) track from commentary track, with partial blend at 2/3 volume of what I could put together from the lossless flac and cinema dts channels that I cleaned up for ambient noise in Diamond Cut DC Forensics8. Once put together, it's still noticeable that there's a transition in fidelity from completely lossless dragula to next track but it's not as noticeable and again, it's as good as it's gonna get.

I realize that this thread hasn't been active for 4 months but I have a question about the mono Australian mix for Mad Max. So there is no lossless copy of the mono track floating around, I get that, but how bad is the lossy audio? secondly, would it be better to rip the audio from this: http://www.amazon.com/Version-Features-Original-Australian-Dialogue/dp/B000057CWS

It states that it's a PAL transfer VHS tape (has the PAL speed up and is the UK widescreen edition) but contains the original Australian audio. So my question is: would a proper transfer of the audio (in lossless PCM) from the VHS tape be better than the lossy version on DVD & BD? I realize that with tapes, audio doesn't always stay in perfect sync when aligning with a digital video source but my question still stands...

Hope I'm not wasting anyone's time by asking this question...

 Ah! I thought that the isolated score was just going to be the track from the original DVD release, but you're talking about assembling a new track from scratch for better sound quality! I heartily approve! If you do make an upconversion, I would hope you would include the original stereo version as well.

It sounds like your primary source for the score is the 2 CD promo of the score that was leaked in the early aughts, which I was lucky enough to snag a copy of this when I went looking for something with better sound quality than the compressed DVD AC-3 track. It has the advantage of not having Don Davis talking over the heads and tails of cues (and sometimes over them — as interesting as some of his comments are, they are intrusive if one is trying to listen to the music), and cues play out in full without the album edits.

Most of the songs can be slipped in with some edits made, but there are a few moments where the film has song remixes that don't appear on the album or the promo. The ones that spring to mind are “Clubbed To Death” and “Leave You Far Behind.” In those cases, you may be limited to the isolated score track. 

I feel Don Davis' scores for Matrix trilogy to be outstanding and unique. I was somewhat surprised for a while that more scores didn't start sounding like the Matrix trilogy. I guess I shouldn't have been, as one of the reasons why these scores work so well for their films is because, in the tradition of the best science-fiction scores, they have a very specific sound that relates to the subject matter.

 First of all, HAPPY NEW YEAR 2014!!!

I'm very excited right now and am posting some updates on my progress with the audio. So, thanx to DoomBot (thank you again for the lossless Cinema Track - it made a HUGE difference) I was able to look at the clipping issues I had noticed in Andrea's lossy Cinema DTS track and to my surprise (and joy) the issue was almost non-existent in the lossless track. In comparison, the lossy DTS track that Andrea had in version 1.0 had a total of over 30 thousand (!) clipping issues in just channel 01 of the 06 channels of audio; whereas, on the other hand, the total amount of clipping issues in the lossless track was around 130, most of which (around 90) was in channel 03 (center) in the louder action sequences in the last third of the movie. Seeing as this was the case, I cut out ONLY the parts that needed a little correction (where I used the Digital Wavefile De-clipper{which is a very light filter that doesn't degrade the sound IMHO} in Diamond Cut DC Forensics8 Audio Laboratory) and then re-inserted them back into the rest of the un-touched audio. The total amount of corrections in actual real-time was 6.822 seconds of audio that needed to be edited. Then, because the audio had a volume level that was almost at max before clipping starts, I lowered the overall amplification of all channels (except channel 04, the LFE) by a factor of -2.7dB. This will prevent any kind of clipping in the DTS core of the DTS-HD MA track that I have encoded using DTS-HD Master Audio Suite 2.6. I ripped Andrea's spoRv version with meGUI into a 1.97GB (for video at 2000kbps) mkv for easy referencing (and fast muxing) using the ultrafast setting (didn't care about video quality, was just for referencing)... anyway... the Cinema DTS-HD MA track sounds incredible (I'm kind of an audiophile and have the right equipment to enjoy good sound)... very much so looking forward to including this in version 2.0.

Now, the reason I'm really excited right now, is because I just finished watching the Matrix (using above mentioned reference file) muxed with the PCM 2.0 score track that I put together. WOW! Not at my work, but at the score. Again, WOW!!! It's amazing how much you don't realize what affect the music has on the atmosphere of a movie until you watch a movie with ONLY the music. There were things I haven't noticed before in the facial expressions of the characters (particularly Agent Smith and some of the expression in Cypher's face that make it more obvious how much of a snake he is) as well as other little things I noticed about how fake the fight scene in the subway station actually is. Amazing how sound effects can trick you into believing somthing is more than it appears to be. Anyway, for the most part, I have to say that the result is flawless. Indeed, StarThoughts was correct that certain last-minute edits were done with the audio. In fact, it seems like StarThoughts knows a lot about the score. Thanks for pointing out the places I might have issues (as you were right) I payed more attention to these moments because someone pointed out that I should ;) Most of it, like I said, came out flawless... most of it, LOL... Honestly, this is the first time ever that I have taken on such a task. I have been editing sound for a long time, but editing sound and mixing sound are not completely the same thing so this was an experiment for me. I am a stubborn person and I wanted to learn something new and get this done. There are only two (!) places in the whole score that I have to correct. First is the transition between Dragula and the next track (where for about 1.5 second there is an out-of sync issue where there is a slight echo-will explain more why further down- and then everything else is fine. And then about 40 minutes into the movie there is an instance where I cross-faded between two instrumental tracks incorrectly (the first one ends abruptly and I should have done a full fade-out of it instead of a cross-fade out) and it's obvious that those are two separate tracks. Both of these should be easy to correct because I know exactly what I'm looking for and how to correct it.

When it comes to HOW I put this together... ah, this was tricky. The final track is actually 99% CDDA quality (as I have verified with audiochecker and spek) and will be posting the proof files for this once I have the final touches completed on the audio. The 5.1 upmix also sounds great where I'm using the steve thompson plugin in audacity but will have to re-do once the stereo master is complete. planning on encoding the 5.1 mix into a DTS-HD MA/core track. Anyway, to put this together I used the following: lossless score (from the 2cd promo FLAC don davis score) lossless OST (also from FLAC) lossless copies of tracks missing from OST (also in FLAC, one in APE) lossless Cinema track, lossy English Commentary track 5 (the ac3 file at 192kbps)
Now, the songs that were used in certain parts of the movie weren't necessarily the same as the track themselves, in the fact that they were specifically remixed in studio for this movie from the original tracks. This proved to be tricky here and there but the I realized that I can play a couple of tricks on the audio by layering (at precisely the same moment down to 1ms) multiple sources once I had the volume leveled at the same for all. By doing this I was able to seamlessly blend between sources (sometimes using 2 for a couple seconds at a time before fading one out) and re-construct as much lossless audio as possible. So in certain music tracks, it blends between lossless flac file, lossless Cinema audio (where I use only channel 01 and 02 L+R) where I cut out any sound effects that were layered onto that, and lossy English Commentary track 5 (which I had cleaned up a little in Diamond Cut DC forensic8). Now, with them all at the same volume level, I was able to cross-fade between the two or three when needed to reconstruct the entire song mix. Not to pat myself on the back, but the result is actually pretty decent. I have an extremely trained ear and only on rare occasion could I notice the difference in fidelity for a split second. but it's so quick that you almost dont notice. I will let you guys judge once I have it officially complete. Like I said, very excited.

@StarThoughts: if you would be interested in previewing the score track once its finished that would be cool.

Also, now I have all the audio/subtitle tracks (except the score that I'm still working on) muxed into one mkv file to see the actual size and (including the score tracks because I have their sizes already) it takes up almost 22GB. The korean subtitles are corrupted so I had to toss those and it looks like the bengali subs might have to be edited for timecode (looks like they are at 25fps, but will check later) So the "International Edition" of version 2.0 looks promising. Think this is long enough of a rant LOL :)

Hope everyone had a good Christmas :)

Now, with that out of the way, I have a couple of updates.

So the Cinema track is nearly done, short of a couple of tweaks and then encoding into DTS-HD MA - this should be completed within the next 24-36 hours depending on how much my kids distract me

Next, the Score track... f*ck, this one has been a little bit of a b*tch because the timing on the Score cds in reference to the actual movie doesn't always line up unless I change the speed of the track (without adjusting the pitch) but the changes is what puzzles me. on certain tracks (like the initial 50-second intro) the timing conversion I have to do is like when you adjust from NTSC to PAL (in other words I had to do a PAL speed up to adjust the timing to match the NTSC soundtrack) but in the very next track I had to do a PAL to NTSC timing conversion which makes no sense either. And some tracks require no adjustment at all. It is slowly coming together ( have about 30% done right now) but it will take me a little while longer to finish it so that everything syncs up perfectly and that the volume changes remain the same as in the movie where for most part I am using the Audio Commentary Track 5 as a reference for this. Once completed, I will include a 2.0 PCM, as well as a 5.1 upmix (in DTS-HD MA)

I have also found an additional audio track: Ukrainian ac3 2.0 256kbps 48KHz

And subtitles for 12 more languages:

 Thanx for the offer, however thanx to a friend of mine in the Czech Republic, I now have a copy of DTS-HD Master Audio Suite Encoder v 2.6 and will be able to do the encode myself.

On side note, it really looks like things are slowly coming together on the audio side of this. I will be posting more updates as I move things along, probably more so after Christmas (I have a 4 and 2 year old daughter so I wont have as much time next few days)

Can't wait to see what progress Andrea ends up making on improving the video for version 2.0

This is a wonderful project that I'm happy to be a part of because the first Matrix movie was awesome and should be preserved the way it looked originally.

@The Aluminum Falcon: the program I use does not have the capability to encode lossless DTS-HD, only lossy DTS, however I'm sure that you are right about someone having the ability on this forum. That being said, I understand your suggestion and even though it might take up more room (it will fit on BD-50 either way) if a PCM and DTS tracks are both already on the release then no one has to go through the trouble of extracting anything out of the DTS-HD audio. In other words, all (technically) possible combinations of audio will already be available directly on the release. Then again, if there is someone on here that has the ability (software-wise) and would be willing to help with the encode (or with access to the proper software) then I might go that route instead. This is all a work in progress where doing the audio properly and as completely as possible (as far as availability of numerous languages) is a little bit of a process.

 Not to speak for Andrea, but we are all glad that you enjoyed version 1.0 ;)

Now, as far as the audio questions (since I'm working on that aspect of version 2.0) I have certain answers.

The "official" version 2.0 will be released on BD-25 (excerpt from a PM from Andrea: "As BD-50 are really expensive in comparison to BD-25, and there could be a small "hiccup" when laser pass from a layer to the other, I'd prefer to release my project only on BD-25...") So with this being the case, in order to make sure that video bitrate does not have to suffer, certain audio tracks must be omitted due to size of a BD-25. Version 2.0 will contain a Re-mastered (I'm working on certain clipping issues on that, especially in second half of movie on the center channel, but trying to do minimal filtering as to maintain fidelity and not incur any degradation of sound) Cinema DTS track, ac3 tracks for English, German, Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, first English Commentary track, the WORKPRINT audio track, and the isolated score track (which I am working on, need a little bit of extra HDD space due to undo feature on programs I'm using and should have a new 2TB HDD in the mail tomorrow)

Now that being said, I was also told by Andrea in a PM "...then, if someone like you want to add his own preferred sountracks, just demux the .m2ts file... ...discard the unwanted soundtracks, remux video with whatever preferred soundtracks (and subtitles)..." AND I will be doing just that where I will make a BD-50 version which I will nickname "Version 2.1" (name may be adjusted later, not sure yet)

This "Version 2.1" will contain numerous audio tracks and subtitle tracks that I have been hunting down on the internet. Some I found on Russian torrent sites, some were on usenet (thanx2MadPsycho[not user here on OT] for the premium access for last week), and somewhere on Polish and Turkish file-sharing forums.
Anyway, here's a compiled list of the audio tracks I will include:

 I agree. Don't get me wrong, even though it's re-encoded it sounds way better than it did, but an option for FLAC would be nice as well. Will put it together for release, when I have the isolated score track finished ;)

EDIT: thanx to DoomBot, I now have the original source PCM for the Cinema track and will be working on that next couple of days. Still has clipping issues (although only half of how much was in DTS I had to work with before) but will sound better once finished because I'm working with better source

EDIT2: After extensive searching on the internet, managed to find a "Complete Score" edition of the score in FLAC and since the music score track on the BD-25 was only an ac3 at 192kbps, will be re-doing the score track from scratch. Also have the OST in FLAC, plus have tracked down any other music used in the movie but not on anything officially released to do with the Matrix (like the song on neo's headphones at beginning of movie) Once finished, will encode into a PCM or FLAC /possibly make a lossy ac3 version at higher bitrate (still unsure, will see as project moves forward)
