The Kenobi <s>Movie</s> Show (Spoilers)

Also…is James Earl Jones still the voice of Vader?

I don’t think it’s confirmed but I’d say it’s a safe bet. He voiced Vader in Rebels and Rogue One and while his voice sounds a little different, it’s still undeniably Vader and very intimidating.

If he’s chosen not to take the job, I think Scott Lawrence who has voiced Vader in multiple video game projects since Tie Fighter in 1994, and did a particularly fantastic job in Jedi Fallen Order, would be a great pick.

Are we taking bets on whether we’ll see that awful helicopter nonsense with the spinning (that’s a good trick!) saber?

I hope so, because it’ll make me laugh. A lot.

My stance on helicopter lightsabers is pretty much that I know they’re silly, but I don’t care, I just find it hilarious that so many people hate them with a passion.

sigh

Is there there some sort of mandate that all live action SW movies and series must have a desaturated colour palette? I’m fed up with this lifeless look.

Yeah I was disappointed to see that the visuals for Tatooine don’t look great, as usual. The cinematography is done by Chung-hoon Chung who is usually known for rich and very colourful cinematography so I still have a bit of hope. Overall, though this trailer made me less excited for the series.

We can add both the Grand Inquisitor and the Fifth Brother to the ever-growing list of animation-live action transitions that haven’t worked. This isn’t even the first time we’ve seen the Grand Inquisitor’s Pau’an species in live action, so the exaggerated art style of Rebels can’t be used as an excuse.

I mean come on…

What do you think of the <strong>Sequel Trilogy</strong>? - a general discussion thread

fmalover said:

The last few posts touch upon something that has been bothering me about Disney’s SW in general, which is the good guys are so good at winning it makes me wonder how are the bad guys in charge.

It’s not like the original trilogy is hugely different, with the obvious exception of Empire, with the Battle of Hoth and the capture of Leia and Han. I know you think Rebels is the prime culprit for this issue, but I think the biggest Disney SW equivalents to these moments come from that series. The Battle of Atollon is similar to Hoth - Rebels overwhelmingly defeated, although the rest of their fleet scatters and the main characters manage to escape - or the Rebels’ assault on Lothal, where every x-wing is shot down before the attack can even begin.

The Battle of Scarif in Rogue One might be a Rebel victory but it still has huge casualties for the Rebellion as Death Troopers and Vader get involved.

I can’t defend the sequels or The Mandalorian in this respect though.

SW is not Star Trek so I can do without arbitrary depth and nuance added to creatures that were originally made to serve as simple monsters or caricatures of life and history.

I think it’s a very fundamentally bad idea to vilify an entire species, no matter what universe you’re writing for.

Also, speaking of Tuskens, does anyone else really enjoy how these Disney+ shows have been developing and humanizing various mook aliens from the older movies?

Yeah, I love this trend. It was very well done in The Mandalorian chapter 9, and done even better in The Book of Boba Fett chapter 2. Just made me more annoyed when the entire tribe was slaughtered offscreen in the next episode, with no payoff.

I would have liked if the plot of TBOBF was Boba eventually bringing about a new era of peaceful co-existence between the Tatooine settlers and the native Tuskens.

Ranking the Star Wars films

Den said:

As for the TV shows, I don’t know where I’d put them. I never watched CG CW, and Rebels, or Resistance, just heard some of what they did and it sounds good.

I say this to a lot of people, but I highly, highly recommend the animated series. Rebels and the final arc of Clone Wars are my two favourite things that Disney has done with Star Wars. It sounds like you would really like them.

Ranking the Star Wars films

Updated ranking:

Films:

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Rogue One
  5. Revenge of the Sith
  6. Solo
  7. The Force Awakens
  8. The Phantom Menace
  9. The Last Jedi
  10. Attack of the Clones
  11. The Rise of Skywalker

TV series:

  1. Rebels
  2. The Clone Wars
  3. The Mandalorian

  5. The Book of Boba Fett

Looking forward to seeing where upcoming series such as Obi-wan Kenobi fall on this list.

I think doing a book/comic ranking would be too difficult for me so I won’t even attempt it.

Should Palpatine have been the one to say “To be angry is to be human”?
Time

I agree. Padmé being explicitly told that he slaughtered a village and being understanding, of all things, is the most unbelievable thing about their relationship to me. I feel Anakin should have glossed over it, or pretended he didn’t remember. That way, all Padmé knows is that he felt immense anger, but doesn’t know if he acted on it - so she could still say the line and have it fit naturally. However, thematically it would probably have been better if there had been a way for Palpatine to say that to him somehow.

He says things along the same line in ROTS anyway (“It is only natural… he cut off your arm, you wanted revenge”).

Did Lucas forget that Obi Wan served Bail Organa in the Clone Wars ?
Time

  1. I guess that is a possible explanation, but I think it would have been a lot cleaner if Lucas just didn’t include R2 or 3PO in the prequels at all. There is zero reason they needed to be there other than nostalgia.

I agree with this. I like the idea of the story happening from the perspective of the two droids, but in the original trilogy they play a crucial role in the action while in the prequels all they do is hinder it. Their presence always felt very unnecessary to me, and they’re forever being used for goofy humour (such as everything that goes on in the Battle of Geonosis scene) which just never landed for me.

What’s more, their inclusion makes it an even bigger coincidence that they end up with Luke and the OT heroes. Lucas should have created two new droids to fill an R2-3P0-like role and dynamic if that’s what he wanted.

What 'a Star Wars Story' / anthology / spinoff film would you like to see?

Star Wars: A Holdo story. That character’s sacrifice really made me interested in seeing more of her backstory.

She appears in the novel Leia: Princess of Alderaan by Claudia Gray, if you’re interested. She’s currently popped up in some current Star Wars comics set between TESB and ROTJ, as a friend to Leia helping her try to save Han.

YouTube/Vimeo/etc... Star Wars video finds
Time

Timothy Zahn did an interview with the Fandom Spotlite youtube channel, where he talks about Thrawn’s portrayal in Rebels and upcoming series, his own books about Thrawn and the Chiss, as well as non-Star-Wars projects he’s been up to.

Timothy Zahn On THRAWN & ELI VANTO - Farpoint 2022 Interview

He says he’s very confident in how Thrawn will be handled in future series such as Ahsoka, but that he hasn’t been consulted. (I feel he’s being very nice about this - he deserves input into the direction of his character for worldwide audiences, instead of just writing books afterwards to fill the gaps. But at least he seems ok with it)

He also has proposals for future books he could make, so I’m excited to see which of those come to fruition. Time will tell…

I love that this show is still getting some love and acknowledgment. Only 4 months to go! 😃

Honestly, I have a feeling Rebels will be getting even more love and acknowledgement as time goes on, as it seems to have become pretty integral to the future of these live action Star Wars shows.
