RIP Tom Veitch, 1941-2022
Time

Author of comics such as Dark Empire and entries in the Tales of the Jedi series, Tom Veitch, has sadly died of covid-19 at the age of 80.

An early pioneer of the Star Wars expanded universe, with a wonderful imagination. May the Force be with him.

This is where I first saw the news: https://www.cbr.com/star-wars-tom-veitch-obituary/?utm_content=bufferbe8ae&utm_medium=Social-Distribution&utm_source=CBR-TW&utm_campaign=CBR-TW

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread

Something tells me Chung-hoon Chung’s cinematography for Obi-wan Kenobi will be a nice change. He was Director of Photography for IT and Last Night in Soho, two very colourful and beautifully shot movies. He’s also done other very acclaimed movies like Oldboy and The Handmaiden, I just can’t speak for those because I haven’t seen them yet.

I’m so concerned about Kenobi: can they ruin SW any further? 😕

Kenobi is a totally different creative team so I wouldn’t give up hope just yet. Same with Andor - Tony Gilroy, who was heavily involved with Rogue One - is writing. Honestly, I’m just concerned about Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni’s upcoming projects.

Well articulated, reviewed, and written, sir. I have to say, after chewing on the whole series a bit now that it’s over, I agree fully with your article. I started excited, became more so, suddenly lost interest, scratched my head at Mando Season 3 episode (even though it was my favorite), loved Ms Howard’s episode, then enjoyed bits of the finale. I’ll look for more of your work on that site. Again, great piece.

Thank you very much! I was unwisely writing it in the early hours of Friday morning so I’m glad you agree it turned out nicely. I didn’t entirely trust myself making that judgement!

A '<strong>Rumour and News</strong>' thread for reported new Star Wars films and tv series
Time

Update to the above: multiple sources now suggest a High Republic live action series begins filming in June. Seems to still be one with a younger cast of characters, even around 10-12 years of age: the article suggests it could be the story of how the friendship between Avar, Elzar and Stellan began, which could be interesting.

WARNING: character death spoiler for The Fallen Star contained within.

Boba’s character development at the start of the series needed to be continued, Cad Bane’s importance to Boba’s past needed to be set up earlier. If these things met in the middle, and the screen time wasted on getting The Mandalorian season 3 early had been spent on stuff more related to the story, you might have a really bold, original, character-driven series. The ideas were there, but they needed so much more organisation and better execution.

The Kenobi <s>Movie</s> Show (Spoilers)

Oh I hope this show is good … I have to admit I was a bit let down with Bad Batch and Boba (not saying they are bad/trash/etc. … just a bit let down.)

I agree. Thankfully there are some fresh writers on this series I believe, and a director who has really proven herself with some of the best episodes of The Mandalorian. I’m still iffy on the idea of Vader and Obi-wan duelling again, but I’ve come to accept it will happen, and have a lot of hope for the series in general.

Latest rumour is that we will see Rupert Friend playing the Grand Inquisitor from Rebels. I think he’s a great pick, but it’s a shame they couldn’t get Jason Isaacs to reprise the role.

I actually thought the finale was great. But I don’t like the show very much overall - it is absolutely messy and lacking in focus. We start off with some interesting character development for Boba, which gets gradually less interesting over the course of two episodes until the writers give up and give us Mandalorian season 3 content instead. What’s more, it’s ESSENTIAL Mandalorian season 3 story content, and it’s in the wrong show.

I’m glad we returned to touching on Boba’s development in the finale, as Cad Bane tells him he can’t escape his past but Boba symbolically kills him with the Tusken gaffi stick (which reminds me, I still think killing off the Tuskens was a major, major misstep). I also really liked Cad Bane’s death scene. He had to die at some point, he was probably headed for the retirement home soon anyway.

Crafting the Illusion of a Wider World

Interesting topic and I agree with the OP and other posters as well. Mostly it comes from writing and how all the trilogies have been written in different eras. In the 70s and 80s if you left your hometown without a map you really were lost, and the world was a big place just behind a corner. Now when you have Google Maps, GPS and you can track anyone around the world, this place has gotten a lot smaller. And it shows as the writers are living in this world, everything is a click away so that is how they also write, unintentionally.

This is a really good point which I’ve never considered.
