The Rise Of Skywalker — Official Review and Opinions Thread

I’ve been watching theater audience reaction videos (mostly positive ones). How much do you want to bet that half of the people in the theaters are part of that damned “Fandom Menace” group, ready to return to their caves, go on a computer, and insult fans of the film, while also sending death threats to the cast & crew, and creating videos on YouTube (with some of the dumbest, clickbaity thumbnails I’ve ever scene)? That’s the scary part about all of this. When you go out to a Star Wars event, you never no if the fellow fans beside you are part of the toxicity. They may seem decent on the outside, but in actuality, they are cold blooded monsters, hellbent on spreading their miserable points of view all over the planet. It’s hard to trust other fans…

I keep telling myself that those kind of fans are in the minority and it’s unlikely I’ll ever meet one. They really are the worst.

They’re not going to retcon the Sequel Trilogy. Like how the previous generation had to come to terms with the prequels being forever a part of Star Wars, the current generation will have to come to terms with the sequels. There’s hope for them to be slowly improved and augmented with ancillary material - what you could consider a slow retconning, maybe - as the prequels were…

I absolutely think The Mandalorian is doing that, in the same way The Clone Wars did with the prequels. We’re seeing the New Republic through its soldiers, which should make its destruction in The Force Awakens more compelling, and it’s clear that the core worlds are being complacent about Imperial remnants, so we’re seeing how the First Order begins. We never saw Luke’s painstaking efforts to create a new Jedi Order onscreen, but now we are, and it should make his self-exile more powerful - we get the sense he’s worked for years to build this, only for it to come crashing down upon him because of his own mistake, and fear. We even saw force healing in The Mandalorian around the time it appeared in The Rise of Skywalker, and I feel better about the new ability because baby yoda does it!

There’s no chance in hell that LFL are going to retcon the sequel trilogy - they’re connecting it.

The Book Of Boba Fett (live action series) - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *

I much prefer Boba being an honourable man now, that’s believable character development. We get to see some of his humanity for a change, instead of him being stuck in the generic mould of ‘impersonal cool-looking villain’ because that’s what everybody knows him as from the OT. Not that I don’t like Boba Fett from the OT, but often character change is good, particularly in Star Wars.

Retcons it how? All they did was make jokes about how implausible it was.

Well, it doesn’t actually happen. Kylo tells Palpatine that he dies when Vader throws him down a reactor shaft, and when that actually happens, he falls all the way into the explosion. I believe the canon explanation for Palptine’s return is that there was a clone body waiting for him on Exegol, and during the fall to his death, he projected his own spirit across the galaxy into that body. Doesn’t happen in the Holiday Special!

I believe that those unfinished scenes are, until finished and released, non-canon, but I’ve long forgotten where I got that from. I actually hope Cad Bane was killed in that shootout - in my mind, a great story arc for Boba Fett would involve him standing up to Bane and killing him, only to eventually replace him as the galaxy’s most feared bounty hunter. I think this ‘vicious cycle’ would make a good theme around bounty hunting.

Lego Star Wars: Holiday Special - a general discussion thread

Finally watched the Lego SW Holiday Special, I really did enjoy it. It’s suitably short, and very silly with a simple message. I particularly love the lines that are poking fun at Star Wars in general, like “Stop everyone in a black cape. I know the drill.”

I appreciate Rose being included in something, and it’s nice to see Kelly Marie Tran doing more Star Wars things. Also appreciated the return of that blue musical legend.

Also, the Holiday Special totally retcons Palpatine’s resurrection in TROS. Star Wars is saved!

So true! I was really hoping it would be called “The Calrissian Chronicles”.

Yeah, I was hoping the same. That was a real missed opportunity. Some of the titles on that list sound like working titles, but oh well, name recognition is important I guess.

I really love 80s music. I DO have Spotify, so it tends to be that the older records I like I get on vinyl.
Still hoping for records of The River, Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony (played this in an orchestra once), The Cranberrys’ first album, and another Star Wars soundtrack, TESB probably.

That said, we know Ahsoka, Rangers, Mando and maybe even Book of Boba are set to “culminate in a climactic story event”. I think that whatever it is will be amazing, but I wonder if this will be yet again another pre-epilogue event. Perhaps Ahsoka becomes ‘the White’ after/during that?

In my mind, the epilogue was set shortly after the Empire’s defeat maybe at Jakku - it has the feeling of relief, new-found hope, the arrival of a New Republic ship and x-wings signalling a new era for Lothal. This isn’t a rational reason at all, but just because of the vibe it has I hope we don’t push it too far back.

You speak of head-tails, I wonder if her transformation into her Rebels epilogue appearance could result in the longer head tails. Just a thought, could be symbolic of her gaining a new sense of life/knowledge to have her lekku/montrals be more full of life. Would go with the appearance change of her gaining the staff and white attire.

It’s canon that togruta head-tails grow longer with age (I like this a lot) and Ahsoka had hers long throughout rebels, this retcon would seem really odd to me.

I’m imagining all the Jedi we hear in TROS just stood together in the World Between Worlds, watching Rey through one of the portals.

That means they’d have been able to enter through the portal and join the battle. Lazy bastards!

People keep using the phrase “trained martial artist” as if it means anything. Especially coming out of Hollywood…

And even if she does have authentic martial arts training, why does that make everyone think that she must be cast with the intent of using that skillset? Actors often have wide ranges of experiences in their backgrounds that may or may not come into play for any given role…

Of course she doesn’t have to, but Gina Carano is a martial artist and Sasha Banks is a WWE wrestler, and they’ve both got to show off in hand-to-hand fight scenes. You could hire an actor, but when you hire someone who can act AND fight well… you’re getting an added bonus you might as well use, and they might be able to charge more because of it!

Ahsoka (live action series) - general discussion thread
Time

Hi captainadano, welcome to the site.

I like Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka, and I’m glad to have her back for a limited show, but I’m also convinced that Ahsoka works best in animation. There you’re not constrained by practical necessity, and Ahsoka can get her Rebels-length head-tails back. I absolutely think that a sequel to Star Wars Rebels should be animated, and judging from the Sabine and Ahsoka artwork Dave Filoni was posting on Twitter for ages, you’d definitely get more than a limited series out of it. The news that the Ahsoka show is shorter than we expected gives me hope.

I also got the sense from the white cloak and staff that Ahsoka had been on some kind of spiritual journey, and it would be quite an outlandish idea if Ahsoka had been given an important role connected to the Force, like keeper of the World Between Worlds or something like that. I hope they go that route.

Also, Rebels characters deserve better than being side characters in a show titled and about Ahsoka.

I’d only go for the OT trio if it was an animated project. And I’d LOVE to see the OT trio in an animated project.

In fact, I’d prefer it if the inevitable Ahsoka and Luke first meeting is in animation. CGI Luke is fine for The Mandalorian, but when you need to convey emotion… maybe not.

No concept art or character poster this week.

I have to say I was looking forward to the Luke character poster. They have to release it at some point… right?

I wondered when watching the episode if any concept art was done for Luke at all, to avoid the danger of it leaking online.

I was a little disappointed with some of the new show titles announced at Investor’s Day (Lando series is called ‘Lando’, Ahsoka series is called… you get the idea) but ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ has a nice ring to it and a ‘book’ compliments the mythical feel that Star Wars has.

I also like that it’s executive produced by Robert Rodriguez as well as Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau. Dave and Jon have a lot of producing to do over the next couple of years.

I think that’s a valid explanation. Gideon emphasises the power of story that comes with the Darksaber - in Rebels Sabine had a compelling story around how she claimed the darksaber and redeemed her previous mistakes, but there wasn’t so much of a story around her giving it to Bo Katan because she felt Bo was more worthy.

This seeming continuity error doesn’t worry me. In season 1 it seemed like they were taking a bit of a liberty having the Mandalorians honour-bound to never remove their helmets, because it worked better for the story, but there was a great explanation provided for that. It’s beginning to look like the same will happen here, although I doubt Sabine will be mentioned by name.

What's your favourite movie(s) and why?
Time

I’m adding ‘Rome, Open city’ to my list, because it’s in turns funny and tragic, made on a shoestring budget and is one of the best anti-fascist films I’ve ever seen; also ‘Wings of Desire’ because of its great cinematography, homage to 1920s German cinema and how it conveys how much cinema is about empathy.

2019 was a great year for movies. I love Parasite because of its visual perfection and the way it visually conveys inequality, The Irishman for chronicling the life of a man, instead of giving the usual snapshot (I think this is an amazing achievement) and Little Women for literally being perfect.

I also think Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best sci-fi films ever made. I can’t help going into spoilers: the story of Joe, discovering humanity and giving his life meaning through a selfless act, is incredibly powerful. The visuals, music, and acting are all stellar. I love how Ryan Gosling can convey so much emotion while basically keeping the same expression for the entire film, he’s incredible.

Some other things I forgot to mention before: I thought the female Imperial comms officer was wasted a little. She’s played by martial arts expert Katy O’Brian, but although Sasha Banks’ wrestling skills got put to good use against Boba Fett, Katy’s character was underutilised a little. Cara Dune and friends have it pretty easy storming the bridge, so it would be nice if she’d put up more of a fight; as it is, I think she’s shot in the back by Fennec Shand in the background of one shot. This is a minor complaint though, that comms officer is still awesome.

The way Luke behaves, it’s as if he’s watched The Mandalorian season 2 up to this point and just when the heroes are in a hopeless situation he goes “well, that’s my cue” and makes his entrance. He seems in complete knowledge of everything going on. I think this makes sense because when Grogu was on the seeing stone, he must have established a connection with Luke, with Luke being able to see what he looked like (and getting over the surprise of finding a Yoda-like being) and feel the bond he has with this Mandalorian. The trouble is, the audience don’t know that. Luke being impassive is fitting for an older, wiser Jedi master, but a smile whenever he picked up Grogu might have been quite nice.

This isn’t a criticism of the episode at all, in fact it’s the opposite: I like the Darktroopers so much that I’m sad they’re all spare parts. I hope they make a return. Interesting that Dr Perishing called them ‘3rd generation’, perhaps the darktroopers seen in the apparently canon Star Wars Commander game were the suits he was talking about.

I’m late, but here’s a proper review of The Rescue:

I loved it on a first watch and still think it’s a great, but I have become more mixed since. It needs a rewatch.

The opening scene is a great: it is well worth seeing how different Imperials are coping with them being out of power in the galaxy. It was an interesting choice to have an opening dedicated to further development and conflict for Cara Dune, and the anger she showed made the scene feel like it was setting up an event involving Cara later in the episode. Unfortunately this scene - although necessary to the plot - felt like a bit of an outlier, because that was never followed up on. Also, I’d like to give credit to Thomas E. Sullivan for playing the most punchable Imperial ever.

I liked the planet they landed on to find Bo Katan. It felt like a Star Wars version of Northern England. The tension shown between protagonists - Bo and Koska Reeves against Boba, and later, Bo Katan against Mando (a conflict necessarily reserved for a future season) - is even more engaging than protagonists vs evil antagonists, and it was handled brilliantly.

I think the biggest thing to praise about this episode was the depiction of the Dark Troopers; I already loved their design, but this episode made them scary and they raised the stakes no end. They reminded me of The Terminator quite a bit. They have suitably robotic animations, like stop-motion in some places, which I liked. Din struggles so much with one, when dozens start punching their way in to the bridge I was the most tense I’ve ever been in any Star Wars content. There have been instances where other Star Wars characters face impossible odds, like over Endor or Exegol, but you know REALLY that they’ll pull through in the end; nothing beats effective film-making on a smaller scale, as in this instance I really thought: there’s no way out.

For me, Luke’s interaction with Mando would have been perfect if it went something like this:
“Are you a Jedi?”
"̶I̶’̶m̶ ̶L̶u̶k̶e̶ ̶S̶k̶y̶w̶a̶l̶k̶e̶r̶,̶ ̶I̶’̶m̶ ̶h̶e̶r̶e̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶r̶e̶s̶c̶u̶e̶ ̶y̶o̶u̶!̶"̶
“I am. My name is Luke Skywalker.”

A shot of Cara, as she realises this is the man who avenged her homeworld, tying back a little to the opening scene.

“I’m building a new Jedi Order…” etc. etc. As it is, Mando knows nothing about Luke or where he’s taking Grogu, and the scene feels somewhat unbelievable. But I think the dialogue Luke DID have fit well. “He will not be safe until he masters his abilities,” seems like an intentional contrast to Ahsoka’s “Better to let his abilities fade,” where she’s acting out of concern more than Luke. I’m sure Luke would also change his mind after teaching one Ben Solo everything he knows.

Ehm, sorry about the big wall of text. I’m still trying to comprehend all that happened. It was a shame that Gideon, who’d been used effectively sparingly up until this point, was dealt with fairly easily. He’s probably imprisoned now or something. The Rescue felt like a penultimate episode in some ways, because of Cara and the to-be-continued conflict between Din and Bo Katan, and at the same time like a finale to the entire show. I still feel like Din and Grogu’s relationship, even at this point, was still just beginning. I’ve NO idea what’ll happen in the next season regarding that.
