The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *
Time

I knew it would logically be Luke as well; many people debated if it would be him, Ezra Bridger or Cal Kestis, but Ezra Bridger is off in the unknown regions somwhere and will hopefully be involved in his own show at some point, while Cal - to maintain the significance of Luke’s journey in the OT - I personally hope meets a tragic end sometime before the events of the original film. Even though I was fully expecting it, as were many others, I think watching the episode there was somehow a shock that… they ACTUALLY did it.

This feeling usually accompanies any big character appearance in Star Wars. We knew that was going to happen… but wow, it actually did. It’s strange.

I just watched the Making of Season 2 doc, it was a real treat. It’s especially lovely to see how the visual effects have improved - creating backgrounds for the Volume out of hand-crafted model sets is particularly exciting - and also just how collaborative it is, with the director of any particular episode AND Dave AND Jon deciding things as a team. It’s not just a job, they genuinely enjoy their work and care deeply about getting it spot-on.

I see there was a scene shot of Mando, Boba and Fennec arriving on Nevarro and being met by Carl Weathers, for chapter 14. I think it’s better having been cut, but I’d love to see that released someday.

No offence meant at all Duracell, but for a Star Wars fan it sounds like you really hate most of Star Wars!

In all seriousness, I think you should give Solo and The Mandalorian a go. I found Solo entertaining enough in the cinemas, despite my prejudices against it, and The Mandalorian’s just great. Those who say the sequels put them off Star Wars, often also say that Mando is the best antidote.

My opinion of the sequel trilogy changed,i sort of hated them until i saw the rise of skywalker, i’ve pretty much come to like them a lot.

This is an interesting one: I loved them until I saw The Rise of Skywalker! It’s weird how that one movie has retroactively influenced how I feel about the other two films. In the end I think they’re well-made movies, or at least TFA and TLJ are, but I don’t like the rehash of Empire vs Rebellion with Palpatine as the main villain. I need to read more Legends novels beyond the Thrawn trilogy but I already think I might take those instead.

This is a great thread idea! Not a lot of my Star Wars opinions have changed over the years, but The Rise of Skywalker is probably the biggest instance of that: I enjoyed immensely it on a first watch, carried along by the revelations and the cinema experience, but when I went to see it a second time I found that it wasn’t a very rewatchable film for me. Ever since my opinion of it has deteriorated, and its massive missed opportunities sting the most. However, after I read the 1st draft of ‘Duel of the Fates’, I was able to see the virtues as well as the let-downs of TROS.

My opinions on the prequels have fluctuated a bit; for ages TPM was my favourite in the trilogy, then Revenge of the Sith overtook it, but I occasionally become compulsive contrarian and reverse my opinion because most of the fans who view ROTS as a masterpiece are often such dicks to others. It’s irrational of course, but it just depends whether I choose to focus on the movie’s highlights or its flaws. This isn’t the only instance of me changing my opinion because of fan attitudes. After seeing The Last Jedi, I was conflicted; it was a bit overwhelming and the film needed a rewatch, but before I got to that point, I saw the wave of hate and abusive messages directed towards Rian Johnson and the cast on social media. Defending them made me love the film.

The original films are as beloved to me as they ever were.

Spoilers for The Mandalorian chapter 16

This probably shouldn’t be in off-topic because it’s Star Wars related, but I don’t know of an equivalent thread.

I’m seeing a lot of sequel-haters using Luke’s scene in The Mandalorian as an excuse to trash The Last Jedi, stuff like “Rian Johnson should watch this and be ashamed of himself” and “they fixed Luke Skywalker”, and it annoys me no end. Luke in chapter 16 is pretty great, but it’s literally an action scene then him standing around talking, and people say ‘this is the Luke we should have got in the sequels’ like it means anything. Like, did you really just want action-hero Luke with no substance? Is this the attraction of Star Wars for so many people now? This probably isn’t the case, but sometimes it feels like the majority of fans are basing their view of Luke’s character on lightsaber action over an actual story. If only we could all be a little more open-minded about new and interesting interpretations of Star Wars.

Oh yeah, and I do NOT like cursive writing. I can’t read the bloody stuff and I write perfectly fast without it. Once, in my primary school years (this is UK system I’m talking about) I was told I would never survive in secondary school without knowing cursive writing, and thus many hours were devoted to practising it. I left primary school and have never used it since.

^^ Where Rey really should have found Luke in The Force Awakens.

Rey walks up to a mysterious figure, shrouded in a blue and white scarf and a flatcap, keeping her distance.

Rey: “Master Skywalker, this lightsaber is yours. The Resistance needs you to help fight the First Order and free the galaxy.”

Luke doesn’t look up, sharing at a bundle of power converters he has clutched in his hands.

Rey: “Master Skywalker?”

She walks closer, and sees the great master overcome with emotion.

Luke: “After all these years…”

Ahsoka (live action series) - general discussion thread
Time

Omni said:

So my girlfriend actually had this complaint about Mando that didn’t even cross my mind and I didn’t see anyone else talk about: she said that Ahsoka in Chapter 13 was very out of character, in not wanting to train Grogu because of his attachment to Din, and she argued that it goes against Ahsoka’s TCW arc.

I guess in a way Ahsoka does leave the orthodox PT Jedi way behind when she refuses to come back to the order, but I’m not sure if that means she disagrees that attachments are bad and potentially lead to the dark side. At the end of the Clone War she just thinks the Jedi lost their connection to the real world and are little more than war mongers, even if some of them have an honest heart. Plus the only other, more affectionate, loving and compassionate Jedi she knew was Anakin, whom she formed a strong bond with, but we all know where that led him.

So I disagreed with my girlfriend, but I saw where she was coming from, that Ahsoka isn’t meant to be a PT Jedi, in fact quite the opposite. But I’m not too big on TCW myself, and only saw Rebels once, so maybe there are more factors here that I’m not considering. What do you Ahsoka and TCW/Rebels fans think?

I’ve seen this complaint before, and I absolutely see where your girlfriend is coming from. Ahsoka had an attachment herself once, a bit of a crush on Lux Bonteri by the look of it, but knew she couldn’t follow up on it. I think that’s no coincidence that that arc takes place in season 5, the same season she leaves the Jedi Order; she must have partly resented the Jedi dogma and strict rules, which were made out of fear. Ahsoka was young and wanted to feel free, probably seeing the Jedi as wrong for acting out of fear this way. So the thought that her behaviour in Mando feels weird occurred to me as well.

I think the key influence was her duel with Darth Vader on Malachor. Dave Filoni has emphasised before that the events at Malachor leave a lasting impact on all the characters, and I think this is the damage it did to Ahsoka: she absolutely must have known that Anakin and Padmé were in love, and seeing Anakin as Vader breaks her heart. It’s interesting that Ahsoka’s “better to let his abilities fade” is a contrast to Luke saying “he will not be safe until he masters his abilities” later in the season, which is pretty much what Mando argued in Chapter 13. Ahsoka seems to be acting out of fear herself in The Mandalorian. Ahsoka still has a long way to go in upcoming shows, and it may be that as she continues to grow as a character she will eventually be free from the impact of Anakin and Vader.

Last point: I find it weird how Star Wars treats the “no attachments” Jedi rule. Humans including myself usually view love as a good thing, and you’d think that Star Wars would show how that dogma is wrong, but it’s forever ‘proving’ that it’s correct! Anakin marries secretly and his intensely protective nature causes his fall to evil, Grogu hurts others because of his bond with Din Djarin, and even Luke probably regrets saying “he will not be safe until he masters his abilities,” in a few years, after teaching Ben Solo everything he knows and inadvertently creating a powerful threat. Man, we should have got Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX. That showed how Rey could be the perfect balance of anger, sadness, fear, love and the rest of it. We would have finally got that issue sorted out! But I digress.

Should Maul have been Greivous?
Time

I don’t know, I’m glad we got Maul mostly because I think he looks intimidating and because we eventually got his great story arc across TCW and Star Wars Rebels. The man used as a tool of Palpatine and the Sith only to be robbed of his destiny and discarded, left broken for the rest of his life. Grievous on the other hand, nothing interesting was ever really done with him. Also his cyborg design may be perfect for selling action figures to 8 year olds, but it doesn’t fit with the OT aesthetic at all.

Dooku’s still awesome.

Was the ESB ‘Boba Fett’s Departure’ theme really used in Chapter 14 or is that something a bunch of music editors have done themselves?

I saw an edit of that, I don’t think it was used in the episode itself. After Chapter 9 I was hoping Boba Fett’s TESB theme would be used, but retrospectively seeing as he was a protagonist instead of antagonist it was far better for Ludwig Göransson to compose a new one.

With all the changes to the OT, how come Lucas never fixed the Speeder scenes in ROTJ?
Time

It’s a shame this thread hasn’t got replies yet, it’s an interesting question. SE changes are mostly colour grading and added effects shots or things; perhaps fixing lighting problems is a whole other feat. Personally, I’m glad the speeder chase hasn’t been tampered with, because I much prefer movies being true products of their time, and I enjoy the action no matter how the effects have aged.

Also, Ming-Na Wen is awesome and Fennec Shand is a great character.

Fennec Shand is a non-character. Remove her and her introductory episode (one of the worst episodes) and nothing changes. She’s so forgettable when she’s reintroduced in S2 and Din recognizes her I had to take a moment to figure out who she was. They could’ve at least given he a unique design or something.

Anakin Starkiller said:

Oh please. Even Sio fucking Bibble is more memorable then her.

Think Fennec Shand is boring all you want, but could you at least be respectful about it? I don’t think she’s worth getting into a heated argument over.

2020 a retrospective
Time

Well, it was an absolutely fantastic year for Star Wars. We got the end of The Clone Wars, The Mandalorian season 2, the end of Star Wars Resistance (which I haven’t watched yet but a good amount of fans do like) and a real lot of new content announced. I’m grateful for all that.

Obviously it’s been a terrible time for many people, and that terrible time will continue into next year for a while, but I’ve been lucky and no-one I know well has died of coronavirus. I don’t mind staying indoors so much, I’m not very social anyway, and lockdown gave me the opportunity to finally watch all of The Clone Wars. I didn’t mind 2020 on the most part, although it could have been so much better for me if not for the pandemic.

We didn’t get this track in the soundtrack album. A criminal offence. I am RAGING.

All I want for Christmas is bonus tracks on Ludwig Goransson’s Mando soundtrack albums…
Again, happy holidays Star Wars fans!

Mods can step down as mods, leave the site, then unilaterally decide to come back and ban someone they don’t like as part of a personal vendetta?

I’m no part of the dispute, but this seems like twisting the truth a hell of a lot. It doesn’t have to be part of a personal grudge, I think Handman was way out of line in how he spoke to Fated Duelist. I’d want mod action if someone spoke to me that way.
