Oh my god man, you seem to be the first person on the internet to notice that! That image also seems to be only the third look at him in the public eye! How has nobody else seen this yet?

So, it’s a ‘lava man’.

This is the first time I’ve seen such a term used to describe him, it gives a much more specific interpretation of what he was as well. This is all so fascinating!

I stg I read through the thread and watched that part of the video before posting and there’s no mention of ‘lava man’ anywhere. Now I don’t know if you’re being sarcastic or not, but it sure sounds like it.

Well, I’ve found something.

Courtesy of my cousin, one of my christmas gifts was ‘The Star Wars Archives. 1977-1983’ by Paul Duncan. I was just reading through it and came across this photo; as it’s from LFL archives, I doubt I’ll find it online, so I took a photo of it.

The caption for the image reads: “Han, Luke, and Chewbacca surrounded by Gamorrean guards. In the background right a man-in-lights walks by, as reference for the Lava Man creature, which was not included in the movie.”

So, it’s a ‘lava man’. They MUST have had concept art for that… what the hell does a creature made out of lava look like??

Thanks both for your replies, I really appreciate it! (If anyone else sees this and also wants to share your favourites, please do, I’d still like to see them) It’s a shame it’s so hard to get comics at a reasonable price online - there aren’t many good comic shops near me either, pretty much only Forbidden Planet International which used to be good at stocking SW comics and now isn’t. I need to look out for more vintage sales on locally.

Vision of the Future

The reason I’m posting this is that I know there some books here less warmly received than others and I’d really appreciate any Star Wars veterans to give me a bit of advice on what I should maybe skip (and what they’d consider essential). These are all pre-Phantom Menace, but it’s still quite a sizable amount of books to buy and read through and I’d like to maybe not waste as much time and money as I might. I should maybe note that there is “skippable bad” and “it’s bad, but some really important stuff happens in this book” and I’d prefer to not miss anything that’s maybe too important for the setup of other stories, even if the quality of the book is on the poor side.

I’m in the same place - I’ve read the Thrawn trilogy, The Truce at Bakura, and Shadows of the Empire, as well as SOTME and 2 Revenge of the Sith era novels. I’m particularly interested in the post-Endor period, so a few days ago I ordered the Dark Empire collection (I hear 1 and 2 at least are good)

I’ve love some advice on what the most beloved legends books are. I often go quite easy on SW content, so I expect to like most of it.

‘Light of the Jedi is One of My Favourite Star Wars Books’ by Alex at Star Wars Explained.

Every single review I’ve seen for this book (only a few, when press copies were sent out) has been really positive. Worldbuilding and new characters particularly praised. I love how this series is shaping up (and I love that cover too!)

Approaching Star Wars canon
Time

Legends fans have had a hard time of it these past years. Many are unhappy with the quality of new canon films and novels, and have begged for their favourite old novels and characters - Shadows of the Empire, Thrawn, Mara Jade and so on - to be re-introduced into the official timeline. Some even demand that the sequel trilogy be retconned or made non-canon (I’m sure this will absolutely NEVER happen). There are many elements I love from both worlds, which is partly influencing my thinking here. But even so, what’s canon and what’s not will always be the issue at the back of our minds which stops us from fully enjoying good SW stories.

Star Wars comes in the form of myths and legends anyway; “A Long Time Ago…” tells us that much. I’ve always seen it as the kind of stories told at campfires or scribbled down in ancient books, but adapted into modern mediums. Would it be better if there WAS no official canon, just differing versions of the same events? If there’s room for ‘unreliability’, it would make minor continuity errors irrelevant and, more importantly, head-canons would become far more important. Fans could genuinely pick their preferred timeline of events, and I think this approach would fit well with the spirit of Star Wars. With all the crossover between canon and legends, like Thrawn appearing in both and a version of the Vong, the Grysk, being adapted, it would be believable too.

For example, “Some say Luke, Han and Leia fought many more years to end the Empire, before a destructive alien force invaded and Leia’s children became the future of the galaxy. Some say the Empire rose again, and a girl called Rey, the granddaughter of Palpatine, rose to become a Jedi and right the wrongs of her grandfather.”

Would this be ideal for existing legends fans, but too confusing for new fans? Should it be an official approach or only a popular fan approach to avoid too much confusion? And would it ever shut up all the insufferable people on social media saying ‘sequels aren’t canon’ every day of their life?

(By the way, I know I’m in no way the first person to think of this; dgraham414 suggested a similar thing on the headcanons thread a few months ago, for example)

No, I think that line did a good job at setting up the Imperial stormtroopers as an intimidating threat. We’d already seen them storm a rebel cruiser in a matter of minutes; then, the consensus is, when they fire on Luke, Han, Leia and Chewie in the Death Star, they’re only looking to scare them off and not kill them, in order to track them back to Yavin. Stormtroopers are threatening enough in the original film, whenever they were such terrible shots in the following films it was simply out of plot necessity that they couldn’t hit the characters.

Besides, Obi-Wan knows what’s at stake in that scene. I think he’s already aware that Luke’s aunt and uncle have been killed. He’s deadly serious.

The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *
Time

I agree that it was nice having season 1 as a re-introduction to Star Wars of sorts, and very self-contained - even the concept of Jedi are explained. But season 2 doesn’t seem to have confused casual fans or newcomers, in fact it’s got them exploring more of Star Wars. They’ll have questions, but they’re questions out of curiosity rather than a lack of understanding the plot. I’ve already had someone who watched Mando seasons 1 and 2, then came to me asking what episodes of The Clone Wars I’d recommend. It’s great to see The Mandalorian having this effect on people.

Are there any new Star Wars Books coming out soon? a general book discussion thread
Time

While I’m on this thread, there are only a couple of days to go until Charles Soule’s Light of the Jedi novel releases and the reviews I’ve seen so far have all been very positive; great world-building, lovable new characters and so on. It might be a few months before I get round to reading it - I want to re-read the og Thrawn trilogy first - but I’m really looking forward to it.

I’m reading all the expanded novelizations i read Last Jedi, And the Rise of Skywalker. This week i’m going to read Solo and Rogue One.

What do you think, are they worth reading? I know they contain extra information - I hear the Rise of Skywalker novel does a better job of explaining the movie than the movie itself - but, having seen the films and knowing the plot, are they still entertaining?

The only movie novelisation I’ve read is Matthew Stover’s Revenge of the Sith, which was very good. It surpasses the film in many respects.

Idea: A Movie or series about the Inquisitors.
Time

Jason Isaacs has said he’d enjoy bringing the Grand Inquisitor to live action, although mostly because of his cool spinny Inquisitor lightsaber. He looks enough like the character for the part, and obviously sounds it - I’d love to see this happen someday.

I like stories about the relationship of hunter and hunted, but personally not sure about the idea of an Inquisitor falling in love with the Jedi they’re hunting. A lot of outlandish ideas in Star Wars work for me, but this one seems a stretch and hard to accomplish. Also, more Jedi on the run in the ESB/ROTJ time period lessens the significance of Luke’s journey (Cal Kestis for example should, imo, die a heroic death sometime before A New Hope)

I think it’s difficult to accomplish really interesting stories around the Inquisitors. I haven’t yet played Fallen Order, but it looks like the story of an Inquisitor and a Jedi who knew each other before the purge reconciling has already been done, Inquisitors like Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister played their part in Rebels - as recurring side-villains so Vader could be used sparingly - just fine, but to my knowledge they’re not incredibly interesting characters by themselves.

I said I’ll post on here if Kevin Kiner ever replies, I also said I’d wait until after Christmas. I’ll consult with my friend who’s also a Kiner fan and we’ll write the message sometime in the next few days. I do hope he gets back.

The more emails are sent off about this, the more likely it is that whoever’s in charge of releasing albums will decide there’s enough demand for them. Very politely worded emails, that is 😃

Where should Lucasfilm go after Episode IX?

They need to ignore the naysayers who post nonsense on YouTube and Twitter. They’re never going to please everyone all of the time, so just make movies and tv shows faithful to the original trilogy - the trilogy which made it successful.

They’re onto a winner anyway but for some strange reason, people just want to post hate.

Thankfully, I think the general consensus is that the people who do nothing but hate on new content are very much an outspoken minority. Rian Johnson certainly voiced this opinion.

I want a sequel to Rise of Skywalker even if its just a standalone film or few episode streaming show.

Apparently Rogue Squadron (2023) is set after The Rise of Skywalker. Glad they’re returning to that era after a bit of a break.

I also wouldn’t mind Lando finding his lost daughter.

Hopefully this will happen in the upcoming Lando series.

I want to see Rey rebuild the Jedi order and take Finn as her student. Finn as a Jedi Knight would be pretty badass.

Look no further than the Lego Star Wars Holiday Special.

This show really upped his love for Star Wars and the larger star wars world. He loved Plo-Koon, he had forgot Plo dies, seeing as the last time he saw revenge of the sith was in the cinema in 2005 when he was 9 & i was 10.
When he got to the Order 66 montage he was so pissed off to see Plo meet his maker.

Dave Filoni is a big Plo Koon fan and apparently was very dismayed when he got blown up in Revenge of the Sith. This confused me a bit, because I didn’t know Plo Koon ever really got to demonstrate character before Dave made TCW, and gave him speaking roles.

What would have made Dave such a fan of Plo before 2005? By the way, I’ve only watched half of the Genndy Tartakovsky Clone Wars series, so I suppose it could be that.

I wonder what the Ahsoka vs. Magistrate, Grogu’s origin to Djarin, and Ahsoka giving the spear to Djarin would look like without the editing? There might be alternate takes on those scenes.

It’s common practice for film-makers to do ‘master takes’ where the first thing they do is run through the entire scene in a wider camera shot before doing all the closer ones - means the sequence isn’t necessarily set in stone before filming, and it can be switched up and played around with in the editing room. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were master takes of the fight scene as taken from that side-on camera position across the water (although I’m sure the actors would get tired), of the campfire scene from the wide shot facing Ahsoka, and of the spear-handover scene from the side-on shot of the two in frame together.

However, we’d be lucky if we get to see whole deleted scenes before a physical media release of the show, so I don’t think any ‘master shots’ will ever see the light of day.

I watched ‘Bob Roberts’ (1992) for the first time yesterday, a mockumentary that is funny as hell but progressively more depressing because it’s still so politically relevant. Tim Robbins plays a charismatic right wing senate candidate, who’s a bit like Trump if he was younger and played guitar. I might not have bought the fanaticism of Bob Robert’s supporters if not for seeing that kind of fanaticism play out for the last 4 years. The film has a couple of boring moments, but on the whole is very under-appreciated. Great performances from Tim Robbins, Alan Rickman and Moff Gideon ahem Giancarlo Esposito.

I find that political films like this always end up preaching to the converted, so in vain hope I’d encourage any conservatives around here to check it out and give your take on it.
