General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

Not sure if there’s a better thread for this, but author John David Wolverton, aka David Farland or Dave Wolverton, is currently in the hospital - presumably with a life-threatening illness. I saw this via the Wookieepedia twitter page.

John did a LOT of writing for Star Wars from the mid 90s to early 00s, including The Courtship of Princess Leia and several short stories for the Tales of books, as well as The Rising Force and The Hidden Past in the Jedi Apprentice series.

May the Force be with him.

I was optimistic from the first episode, not the best but was entertaining and trying to set things up.

Second episode much more positive, liking it.

Third episode … yikes.

My opinion too. I’m really going off this last episode - it might be my least favourite episode of live action Star Wars TV, even though I really loved the portrayal of Black Krrsantan.

I’m probably the only person outside of the show’s creators that likes them.

I like them well enough too. Star Wars has always been full of wacky designs, and colourful designs from the prequels onwards I guess. I can understand the complaint that they look garish and silly against a bleached Tatooine background though.

Anyone else thought of this? 😄

No, but that’s a nice thing to pick up on! As soon as he said that my mind started racing but this didn’t even occur to me.

As for the episode in general - good, but probably my least favourite so far. The fight with Black Krrsantan was fantastic; I think their portrayal of him has been great, he’s very scary. However, I’m very unhappy with the decision for the Tusken tribe to die offscreen. We’d only just got some major development for them, exploration of their culture etc only for them to be slaughtered for some added motivation for Boba. It feels very unnecessary to me, a waste of potential and perhaps even slightly disrespectful to the indigenous people they’re meant to represent.

I also didn’t like the chase sequence, as it felt quite slow and prolonged. The biker gang I like, though. Those colourful bikes are so weird and stupid I love them.

Either way though, it sounds very likely that we might get to see a younger Yoda, which I think would be really cool.

This hadn’t even occurred to me. It’s unlikely if the series is set closer to The Phantom Menace than Light of the Jedi, but getting to see this version of Yoda would be amazing:

Either way, just getting to see Yoda in live action again will be great. I hope it’s achieved using a puppet again - I thought that worked very well in TLJ.

Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

StarkillerAG said:

All right, it’s been a while since I’ve tried one of these ranking things, and there’s been a new show recently (which I’m surprisingly impressed by) so here goes:

  1. Star Wars '77
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. The Mandalorian S1
  4. Return of the Jedi
  5. Rogue One
  6. The Book of Boba Fett (so far)
  7. The Last Jedi
  8. The Mandalorian S2
  9. Revenge of the Sith
  10. Solo
  11. The Force Awakens
  12. The Phantom Menace
  13. The Rise of Skywalker
  14. Attack of the Clones
  15. The Holiday Special

Not into the animated shows?

What are they even gonna do for villains? The Nihl like in the novels? Can’t have the Sith since they’ve been gone for a millenium.

I actually wonder if it will be Sith-related as The Acolyte I believe could only be like 50 years before The Phantom Menace. Maybe following somebody part of a cult worshipping the Sith, who eventually gets to meet Darth Plagueis. I don’t know but I agree that the mystery surrounding this series makes me really excited for it.

I doubt it will be the Nihil - the way I can see it happening, is that the Nihil story is wrapped up by the books and comics and The Acolyte is a separate story. Would be great if they connected in some way though.

Definitely ruthless. Krrsantan joins Dr Aphra’s crew in the comics but as soon as there’s a bounty on her head, he gets fed up of her and begins hunting her down. I think that’s good example of how quickly he can change sides.

He’s also fought against Obi-wan, which is where he got that scar over his eye, but he didn’t do too badly against a Jedi master. A formidable opponent for sure. If Boba fights like he did against those Nightwind soldiers, he’s screwed.

Wow, really can’t believe the near universally positive reception from you guys. I hated basically everything from these first two episodes, don’t think I’ll be coming back for more…

To be honest I’m not surprised - in my experience huge differences of opinion have always been a staple of the Star Wars fandom.

Maybe if you see us change our opinions to near universally negative reception in the next few weeks, you can go back to watching the series… 😉

But I definitely find the less-than-convincing digital shots of Luke pretty distracting in the scheme of things…especially knowing that Shamook was able to improve them so well.

I agree with this, I do find that the computerised Luke is obviously not real and takes a little heart out of the scene for me. On some level I think a CGI effect of some kind was perhaps the right move for that particular scene, as it should be instantly recognisable as Luke, but in general I prefer casting a younger actor or bring back the character in animation instead. The CGI Luke face just seems soulless and I hope I don’t have to bear whole scenes of dialogue with the same effect in future!

I’m very glad to learn a little bit more about the series as it’s one of the upcoming projects I’m most intrigued by

Me too, but did we really learn anything here besides the lead actress?

I like my Star Wars to be an escape from reality, not a reminder of hot-button issues.

To me this implies you also want Star Wars to be an escape from LGBT people, which is a bit of a strange stance to take.

I disagree, because I think the scene where Din Djarin finally takes his helmet off in front of Grogu is what the season has been building to. It’s his last act to Grogu which proves how much he’s come to love him, and how much he’s accepted that he’s ready to move on from the strict customs of The Watch. I have some criticisms of Luke’s appearance, but that scene between them is beautiful and I can’t imagine the season without it. It would end resolving the plot of Din handing Grogu over to the Jedi, but it would lack everything that gives that moment any substance.

She’s fantastic. The jump she did onto the moving speeder train was smooooooth. (And I love how she becomes Boba’s mentor in Tusken Raider combat as well)

I agree I hope Steph Green gets more opportunities like this. She and Jon Favreau did a fantastic job with this episode, it might be one of my favourite episodes of Star Wars TV ever. Especially from the tree scene to the end, there’s something very special about that part of the episode. It’s storytelling that can make scenes of robes slowly getting put on a man, and scene of the man slowly crafting a stick, be absolutely captivating.

Last episode I was much more invested in the present story than the past one, but this episode it was the other way round. I love where they’ve gone with Boba finding an affinity with the Tuskens and adopting their culture, then keeping that with him even when he becomes Daimyo of Mos Espa.

Also, it was very nice to see a subtle comics tie-in with Black Krrsantan. I sense there may be a fight between him and Boba coming, and if so I hope it’s indicated that they already know each other.

So, as it seems we already saw Black Krrsantan, is this girl Dr. Aphra? Or does it not fit with the timeline? (I haven’t read the comics)

I’ve seen this theory thrown around, but Aphra has black instead of brown hair, is supposed to look Asian, and doesn’t have a mechanical arm. Sure, she could have lost a limb and needed a new arm (and a mechanical one would seem fitting for her) but she’d also be missing her iconic electro-tattoos which would be a huge shame.

And also I think I remember Robert Rodriguez saying this is a new character, so in short, my personal conclusion is definitely no.

'Star Wars: <strong>The High Republic</strong>' era publishing project (was aka 'Project Luminous')

Reviews are starting to come in for The Fallen Star, and surprisingly - especially for a Claudia Gray book - it might be one of the weaker entries in the High Republic project so far. Apparently it’s still enjoyable, but more straightforward and lacking in scale than Light of the Jedi and The Rising Storm.

Here’s a good spoiler-free review by Jordan Maison to temper your expectations:
