The Book Of Boba Fett (live action series) - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *
Time

Yeah same, other than that building the ship took an oddly long amount of screentime, my only criticism is that this is a strange way to do a TV show. It’s like that episode of The Bad Batch where the bad batch cameo in their own show. This means A LOT needs to happen in the final two episodes.

But yes that episode was fantastic. Seeing that Din has fallen back on his old bounty hunting life, and still struggles to part ways with cult he was raised in, is actually really sad. He doesn’t even stand up to the armourer, he asks for forgiveness and is simply refused. But things are looking up for him!

Didn’t expect to see the armourer or paz vizla, peli motto or carson teva, again so soon - that was all really nice. I also didn’t think we would see the first live action appearance of Mandalore in The Book of Boba Fett, but we did - and won’t be seeing it again, judging by what the Empire did to it. I also really appreciated that they addressed the scene in Rebels where Sabine passes on the darksaber to Bo Katan - I’m sure Bo probably feels incredibly guilty for “cursing” Mandalore, and perhaps Sabine too - if she believes it.

Return of the Jedi: The "Lightman" Mystery
Time

So film historian (and maker of an original trilogy doc, I think - definitely heard his name before) Jamie Benning has been tweeting about our mysterious lava man today, saying it’s been 40 years today since it was filmed before quickly being abandoned. Here’s the initial tweet, and I’l copy and paste from another below:

https://twitter.com/jamieswb/status/1485939204391587845?s=20

“For the role, stunt coord Peter Diamond was dressed in a racing driver’s jumpsuit rigged up with a plethora of
lighbulbs and plugged into the electricity supply. The suit and the glow of the bulbs made it difficult for him to manouevre.”

Here is some concept art somebody found:

I don’t have the sources for these but they seem accurate to me.

This is has been my most anticipated since it was announced because I love Rogue One. I love the Volume and I think The Mandalorian looks gorgeous, and Boba Fett has had some great shots too, just not as many, but I certainly don’t mind them building as many practical sets as the want. I can’t wait to see more of that galaxy through the perspective of a Rebel spy. I was hoping they’d keep the darker tone. Cassian definitely shot first!

Oops, wrong thread! Sorry for the confusion caused by me posting the article with the same image in two different places.

ANDOR - Disney+ Series - A General Discussion Thread
Time

This article from Star Wars Sessions has some interesting bits of information about Andor…

https://starwarssessions.co.uk/2022/01/21/exclusive-details-regarding-obi-wan-kenobi-and-andor/
EXCLUSIVE DETAILS REGARDING OBI-WAN KENOBI AND ANDOR by Matt Hudson

One piece of news I didn’t expect, but which line up with what leaks we’ve seen so far, is that “The Volume plays no part in Andor”. We’ve seen actual sets being built and honestly this sounds like a welcome change from Mando and TBOBF which are both filmed in the Volume (and sometimes I can tell).

The article also says it will be “gritty, dark, and aimed at a more mature audience than previous shows.” I suppose we could always expect it to be dark and gritty based on the tone of Rogue One, but Book of Boba sounded like it would be dark as well and so far it hasn’t gone that far - Andor sounds like it will push the boundaries a lot more. That comment about being marketed at a more mature audience than other shows intrigues me the most. I doubt it’ll be R-rated but it sounds like this show will feel very different for sure.

The Kenobi <s>Movie</s> Show (Spoilers)
Time

Some information about Obi-wan Kenobi teased in this article by Star Wars Sessions, who claim to have sources close to the projects. (I didn’t think it was suitable for the rumours thread, as there’s nothing specific - just stuff to hype you up for the series)

https://starwarssessions.co.uk/2022/01/21/exclusive-details-regarding-obi-wan-kenobi-and-andor/
EXCLUSIVE DETAILS REGARDING OBI-WAN KENOBI AND ANDOR by Matt Hudson

Regarding Obi-wan Kenobi, they claim ‘the studio is “raving about Kenobi” (whereas the chatter around The Book of Boba Fett has been muted in comparison). They are going as far as to say that Obi-Wan Kenobi is “being billed as the biggest Star Wars event of the past few years and the next few years also”.’

The source also says “All generations of fans will be catered for…this is truly transitional Star Wars”.” This lines up with what we’ve heard about potential Clone Wars flashbacks, with the characters being closer to their versions in the original trilogy, and perhaps an Inquisitor cameo or two from Star Wars Rebels as well.

Really gutted to hear this. Jason always seemed really, really nice and I know I’m going to feel his absence on OT.com.

Jason, if for some reason you’ve come to check these messages, thank you so much for everything you’ve contributed! Take care and may the Force be with you, always.

Once again I thoroughly enjoyed Black Krrsantan. I guess I’m just a total sucker for a big Wookiee! But did anyone catch why he hated the trandoshan? Was that explained and I missed it or did the show not give a reason for his hate?

Trandoshans used to hunt Wookiees (and many still do) so there’s been a long feud between the species.

What do you think of the Sequel Trilogy? - a general discussion thread
Time

I agree that there’s far more investment in Coruscant than there is Hosnian Prime, but I think that with the finished cut of the movie, if you swap Hosnian Prime for Coruscant, it’s a bad decision precisely for that reason. People would have been mad that a planet they’ve been familiar with for years got like 10 seconds of screen time, then destroyed. I think it would have felt almost like a petty dismissal of Coruscant because it’s iconography from the PT.

Destroying Coruscant would have been fine if we’d seen more of it under New Republic rule in the movie first.

The movie’s soundtrack is an underrated gem of late 1990s music.

I actually haven’t seen the movie yet but I’ve heard the opening credits theme, and I think it’s simply amazing. David Arnold did a fantastic job.

Just a heads-up. I wasn’t talking about David Arnold’s score, but the soundtrack which includes tracks from Foo Fighters, Silverchair and Ben Folds Five. Just making sure there’s no confusion.

Oh right, there’s my complete lack of knowledge about the movie coming in. But still. Great opening music.

YouTube/Vimeo/etc... Star Wars video finds
Time

I’ve seen a little bit of discussion about generally positive, chilled out Star Wars youtube channels as they tend to be few and far between: I thought I’d promote this one. I actually know Austin, the guy who runs it, and after not regularly posting for a couple years, he’s trying to grow it again. So far there have only been two new livestreams covering upcoming content but he’s going to do some shorter regular videos as well. 2022 is a great year to be starting posts again because there is so much on the way, and any support would be appreciated!

Seeing as this is technically a thread for videos, here are the most recent livestreams:

What do you think is the most underrated Star Wars story?
Time

Some really interesting answers in here, thanks guys.

I actually agree AOTC is underrated. It feels strange saying that, because for the longest time it was my least favourite Star Wars movie (only dethroned by TROS). I still find it awkward to watch at times, and think parts are badly done, but there are MANY aspects of the basic story premise I think are fantastic. Mixing a romance plot with a detective plot in Star Wars, culminating in an epic display of visual effects in the climactic Battle of Geonosis, is great and I’ve come to respect the movie a lot more than I used to. It’s a very imaginative way to set in motion the rise of the Empire.

I think a lot of my distaste for it in past years comes from the visuals. I think both Coruscant and the interiors of Kamino looked too futuristic in the movie, but I’ve gotten used to those portrayals.

LEGO 'Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga' video game thread

Apparently, TT Games has been doing extreme crunch culture since the mid-'00s, only getting worse with time. I’ll wait until it’s on discount and most/all of the DLC is out, as I really don’t like supporting games produced under such circumstances. It’s not as horrendous as some studios, but it’s still an abysmal working environment.

Yeah this was horrible to read about. Management chose a less efficient engine than Unreal Engine to cut costs and made things way harder for their workers; they’ve been working on this thing five years. Luckily there are promising signs of improvement at TT now by anyone who went through stress to make this game has all my sympathy.

I’ve never played a lot of games/engaged with news about the industry until recently and with this coming just after Lucasfilm partnered with Quantic Dream, who are even WORSE, I’m realising just how terrible pretty much every game studio is. The whole industry is a disgrace and has a long way to go in terms of decent working conditions.

Ooer. This didn’t age well…

I enjoyed the episode, it was fun. It seems we’re done with the flashbacks now, but I had been hoping they would explore how Boba knows Cobb Vanth’s name in The Mandalorian but hasn’t tried to reclaim the armour from him before. There are multiple ways to explain it - perhaps he learned it from the jawas, or went in the direction Mando came from and found Cobb Vanth to ask him about it. But without concrete explanation, it feels like a plot hole.

I think we’re finally caught up on all trailer footage now! I didn’t think I would be this excited to see Din Djarin again, but I am. The Mandalorian season 2 ending felt like both a resolution and a cliffhanger, with the cliffhanger being where Din and the Mandalorians go from here, so finally we’ll get a glimpse of that - likely next week.

“Temuera Morrison and Ming-Na Wen discussed that rather colorful biker gang and the show’s Tusken Raiders controversy during a TCA Winter Press Tour panel.”

I’m glad to see such a big news outlet reporting the backlash at the Tusken tribe being killed off for some cheap revenge motivation. I think it’s an important message to send to Lucasfilm.

[fill in the blank] Just Died!
Time

Had been posting about this in the random thoughts thread but writer David Farland, author of ‘The Courtship of Princess Leia’ and short stories in the ‘Tales of’ series as well as many other works for Star Wars and beyond, has now died. He is continuing to affect Star Wars today; for example, a reference to The Courtship of Princess Leia was featured in Wednesday’s episode of The Book of Boba Fett.

From the Wookieepedia twitter account: “We are very sad to report that David Farland, who wrote several novels and stories in the Star Wars universe under the name Dave Wolverton, passed away last night. His son has reported that he held on long enough for his children to say goodbye, and passed on without pain.”

So…

Why is Boba doing this stuff? Why did he go back to Tatooine, kill Bib and declare himself Daimyo?

I feel that what the show (particularly last week’s ‘tree vision’ sequence) is trying to convey, is that Boba has felt trapped in the identity of a bounty hunter - which he just borrowed from Jango - for a while, and feels the need to reinvent himself. When ensnared in the tree branches he has flashbacks to his past, and only breaks free of said past by breaking the branch which is what forms his new gaffi stick: a crucial part of his new identity.

It doesn’t take much Wikipedia to confirm that, in feudal Japan, daimyo served under shogun. If that applies here, who was Jabba’s shogun???

Yeah, but the term Daimyo is pretty loosely applied to this context anyway. It likely doesn’t have the same specifics it did in feudal times and is used just for cool factor (which I don’t mind at all)

Sadly there’s conflicting information about this, and he may already have passed away. Fellow author Kevin J Anderson has posted a tribute to him: “It’s a terribly sad day. We lost my long-time friend and brilliant writer, Dave Farland. A legendary writing instructor, bestselling SF/F writer, tireless workshop presenter and teacher. I knew him for more than 30 years and we grew up together as writers. I’m gutted.”
