Star Wars Lightspeed edition (* unfinished project + WTF thread*)

Well, what I do is take the blu-ray footage and if there is any change in the lightsaber blade (like vader's pink lightsaber in the 2004) I rotoscope the area of the lightsaber blade from the 2006 DVD and color correct it so, it will be like the blu-ray shot. I used after effects for most of the original HD shots (well, the editing)

So, basically you are making your own "Despecialized Edition", right?

I don't really see the point of this since Harmy already did an amazing job.

Also the credits are slightly different. The main title is simply Matrix, it's also the same for the closing credits.

There are PAL DVD copies that are like this as well.

Indeed, because it's the main European (and possibly elsewhere) title used for the movie.

For example, France, Italy, Spain and Germany used "Matrix" as movie title.

I've tried to color correct the whole movie to match this purple/pink tint (that might be the original and theatrical one.) Based on the PAL DVD slowed down to 23,976 fps I've made a 1.58 GB file with the DTS theatrical audio downscaled to AC3 384 Kbps. I'm currently uploading the files, if anybody is interested just send me a PM.

Here's a comparison shot: http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/49675

Good idea! Let's talk about your preservation of the 82 rental tape :)

You have the really good Panasonic AG-1980 VCR, I can't wait to see how good this awesome cassette will look.

I can do a quick-and-dirty Panasonic AG-1980 =(s-video)=> Panasonic DMR-ES10 DVD recording this weekend, if you'd like.

I would love to see a such thing! Sorry by the way, I didn't see it was a non-SW thread at first...

By the way, the HDTV I'm talking about is a russian one, 1080i mpeg2 29.97fps hard telecined, divided in three .mpg files. And it seems that this one has not tiny black borders on the left, apart on few scenes (like the one in the last image in my previous post) where there is a 4-pixel border on the left.

OK, it sounds like we have different HDTV caps.

So you have a different HDTV version? Does yours have the missing ending credits?

Just to be clear, I have the Widescreen NTSC trilogy with both analog and digital audio. The analog track has a really good dynamic range. I think i'm gonna recapture them since I now have a really good sound card and two working laserdisc players.

I also have the French PAL trilogy (useful to capture the French soundtrack.) I know that a lot of people here are native English speakers so they don't care about foreign languages tracks but this French dub is one of the best ever made. (The dubbing actors were chosen by Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg) plus I grew up with these voices and i'm pretty sure that i'm not the only one who heard a dubbed version while watching the movie for the first time ;)

If anybody has the other NTSC laserdiscs, I talk about the open matte edition. I would be interested to see the differences color wise.

The HDTV versions out there are badly compressed but still enjoyable. They are from HDnet movies so obviously, the logo appears time to time in the down right corner of the picture. The other HDTV version available for the first movie is the Canal+ one but the logo is present during the whole movie. Someone mixed this version with another HDTV source, the WOWOW version which has burn-in subtitles in the picture. But since the guy had to re-encode both sources, I'm pretty sure there is a quality loss.

The blu-ray on the other hand is useless. It suffers of bad DNR and EE... That's why I was more hoping for a "ruLes" version instead of a "spoRv" one.

Hey, Andrea! Do you remember, we talked about a "possible" Back To The Future rules project. You asked me to do some comparisons between the PAL LD and NTSC LD. So here it is with the intro from BTTF2.

To me, the NTSC colors are way better than the PAL colors. The NTSC also shows more information on the left side. The only problem with the NTSC LD is that I can't deinterlace it without having this weird aliasing everywhere and jerkiness on the framerate as you can see on the footage up there.

First of all, thanks Andrea for all the great work! It looks pretty darn good.

About what have been said up there, the upscaled DVD scenes are visible, for example the last scene before the ending credits with the RATM song is from the upscaled DVD.

Unfortunately, the HDTV version is slightly cropped on the left and right sides because it's Super 35 and not full open matte. Plus, some scenes suffer of fps glitches... So I don't think it's a good idea to use it as a source.

The best way to me is to leave the clipped whites and contrasts exactly the way they are on the Blu-ray even if it's not theatrically accurate and only change the color grading which is the most important thing to everyone I guess. This is just my opinion anyway.

Yet Another PAL GOUT Upscale... (* unfinished project *)

Usually I'm huge fan of your work Andrea but this time the noise reduction is definitely too high. The screenshots I've made show a huge lack of details, it reminds me a little bit of a painting.

I don't want to be harsh tho, I still respect your work and i'm impressed by your script but you should definitely reduce the noise reduction.
