So, how is this project going?

1) What HD sources do we have to start working? (Preview Screenchots, please?)
2) Do we already have lossless LD audio rips?

I would like to thank everyone who is supporting this project. Thank you!

1) We are waiting for the awesome Canal+ HDTV rip

2) We have the French and English lossless audio rips

Preserving "French" Original Trilogy - ANH V1.0 released - ESB in progress

Well, the international crawls were made by ILM (and presumably the title cards as well, hence the same fonts), and the German crawl for Empire (which is definitely the 35mm version, as I have it in HD) has a typo as well. I doubt anybody created new optically composed crawls for any of the home video releases. Thus I'm sure the French crawl is the theatrical one.

Interesting. Does the German intro of ROTJ use the same logos/title cards as SW and ESB?

The French intro of ROTJ has completely different logos, i don't know why but they are actually better and do match the English logos.

Here is the intro from the Gold Laserdisc: https://vimeo.com/63337982

I think you should keep the typo to reflect the original theatrical release.

Same in end credits, as Skywalker appears as "Courleciel".

My 2 cents...

We still don't know if it is the theatrical intro or if they made another intro for the video release.

It's quite strange that all the European releases on VHS and LDs use the same font for the Lucasfilm logo and the "A long time ago..." Also, the SW logo freezes the same way in every European version too.

I'm pretty sure the 35mm intro is not the same as this one.

This master is a shame indeed, the TVrip is much brighter than the LD...... and the colors are more natural too...

I find many LDs to be darkish and under-saturated.

Is it possible that companies were trying to compensate for the average overly-bright red-shifted CRTs of the time?

That's a possibility. Some of my LDs look the same indeed. But for SW, it's much darker, i mean on the crawl at the beginning there is litteraly no star it's pretty lame...

All jokes aside, I do have a VCR and it would be fun to transfer to VHS and see what it looks like on the old format. Although I'm not sure whether letterbox or fullscan would be better.

Believe it or not, i am actually making this right now!

I converted the movie to PAL 25fps with a 4% speed up. French audio/French crawl. But it's still quite interesting. I've created a DVD and i'm capturing it on a VHS. I will upload a sample here as soon as possible ;)

Edit: I'm using the V2.0 and i'm doing it in letterbox.

It would be funny if you could convince someone that your tape was dubbed straight from a pre-SE official widescreen VHS release.  (And to further the joke, starting at the beginning of the credits see if you can explain and get them to believe the true source of the video before the custom credits at the very end come up.)

And be kind, rewind.

I thought about it indeed ;) There are no custom credits on this VHS, i've ended up the recording after the official credits and all you can see after this is black. I wanted to do it the most official as possible ^^

I also wrote "CBS FOX 1982" on the sticker that goes on the top of the tape. It looks quite realistic to me.

Yesterday, I checked the french audio of the OUT vs GOUT. The OUT audiotrack has absolutely no dynamic and the voices are too low.

I don't know if thats come from how you capture the audio or if thats so in the THX pressing, but there is someting wrong with this soundtrack. I will check my THX LD in order to see if the sound is better. But I don't will have time to do this tonight.

It doesn't have anything to do with his capture, i have the same problem on my LDs. It's due to the pressing or the master i'm not sure but the THX audio truely sucks.

@Andrea:  You should use the Pyramid audio for your OUT_rules preservation, it sounds way better than the THX audio. Like marvins said, the voices are too low compared to the other sounds plus it seems that they used an auto gain compressor which destroys the dynamic of the mix.

The master used for the Gold Edition and the Pyramid Edition is the same.

The only difference is that the Pyramid has a better pressing (less video noise and drops.)

This master is a shame indeed, the TVrip is much brighter than the LD...... and the colors are more natural too...

The only advantage on the Gold and Pyramid Edition is the audio which is better than the THX audio.

Do you have a reference for size and placement of the Lucasfilm logo and "A long time ago"?

I'm currently uploading the crawl from another TVrip, maybe it could help you, this one is much brighter than the official Laserdisc and VHS editions.

I've slowed it down to 23,976 fps and synchronized it with your version as well.  Plus it was letterboxed in 4:3 so i zoomed te whole thing to get the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio but unfortunately this master seems to be slightly cropped because some black bars are still there on the left and right sides.

Anyway, that should help you as a reference for the logos placement.

What!? You took  the liberty to re-create the French intro? I can't stand this kind of behavior. You should be banned immediately!

;)

Sir, i have to tell you that it's an amazing job you did there.

It looks like the intro of the Laserdiscs, VHS and TV versions. I'm still not sure about the theatrical version tho...

The "Il y a bien longtemps..." is way bigger than the English "A long time ago..."  It seems that it was created for the video release because the original text was maybe too small to fit the 4:3 TVs back in the days.

I had no idea, is it still the best source then?
If someone who can upload 14gb wants to send me a BD-R I can put the MKV on it our just copy my BD-25 with extras and commentaries.

Yes, it's the best source available without DNR and awful color corrections...

Can't you upload the 14GB file in multi parts on a sharing website?

I would be glad to send you a BD-R but sadly i don't have one of these...  actually i don't even have a BD player on my computer.

The Jonno's audio track does not fit the HDTV version, i had to make some cuts in lots of scenes. The film is not frame by frame the same.

I bet this HDTV version is sourced from the 2002 master because in the first Delorean scene, you can clearly see that the wheels on the Marty's skateboard and the fence in the background are pink instead of yellow.

Another interesting fact, this version is presented in 1.78:1 ratio instead of 1.85:1 so there's a little bit more of picture on the top and bottom.

@Jonno:  It's just the first few seconds of black that are missing.
