Info: a Christmas Fan Thread...
Time

I know we’re only about three weeks away from the holiday season, so I guess we can start talking about Christmas programs, that is, those programs you don’t see anymore on television, and even those that haven’t been released on DVD.

I have some of these programs both on DVD-R and floating somewhere amongsted my remaining VHS collection (this will be edited as I find some).

I have “A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert”, that wonderful PBS special aired in 1992 and again the following year…has not been seen since, and was released on LaserDisc but never on DVD. Frederica von Stade has a wonderful soprano voice, and her performance is the most uplifting of all. Rivals any animated special. I also have the “I Love Lucy Christmas Special” (I don’t think that’s on DVD yet, but considering that the series is now on DVD, if you do know otherwise, let me know).

Also, can anyone think of any Rankin-Bass special that isn’t yet on DVD? Or do any of you have rare Rankin-Bass materials (promos, sponsor spots, etc.) that you may have won on eBay through Rick Goldsmidt?

Or even the “Yule Log”?

There is one Rankin-Bass special I have to mention…“Jack Frost”. I have a dub on VHS from a Family Channel airing (I think it’s edited). There are now several companies putting this out on video/DVD. I think the reason is that it is now in the public domain (Warner Bros. apparently not renewing the copyright). Can anyone explain why?

If anyone can think of rare Christmas material not yet on DVD, I’m welcome to replies on this thread.

Info Wanted: "The Story of Star Wars" Bonus DVD at Walmart: Is It Worth It?
Time
If you really want my honest opinion, well, think of it this way...Wal-Mart sold just Ep 3 for $14.99, so if you paid $19.99 for both Ep 3 and the bonus disc, technically it's only $5.

It is worth having, if only for the "new" footage of the 'droids. And no, this isn't the same content as the "Connections" interstitials that came out at the time of Ep 2.

On the whole, though, it's nothing more than a promotional teaser for Episode 3 since the bonus DVD does not cover that film. The copyright notice is 2004, so it would have had to have been produced towards the end of last year.

I bought it anyway, and although I do feel a bit cheated (should have gone to other stores, I guess), it is a curio.

Idea: for an edit of Batman Begins

I am seriously considering a fan edit of this, incorporating the Wayne parents killing from the original 1989 Tim Burton film, and thereby eliminating any footage and plotline dealing with Joe Chill. I would do this version in chronological order, re-edited to better tie in with the other five Batman films ("Batman", "Batman Returns", "Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm", "Forever", and "Batman & Robin").

The widescreen vhs I have is much longer than the official dvd, and i'm sure someone out there has it on laserdisc.

Preservation of the original theatrical cut in widescreen has already been done, and I have it on 2 DVD-Rs. If interested, E-mail me.

Info & Wanted: Titanic - a 4th disc from new set?
Time
Here's what Bill Williams told me via E-mail today concerning the fate of the Disc 4 supplements here in the U.S.:

"You know all of the fuss that’s been going on about the three comic skits that are on the fourth disc of the international release? Big news: they’re on the 3rd disc of the U.S. release as well! They’re hidden on the disc as Easter eggs. The SNL skit can be found in the Deleted Scenes menu – look for the couple in the “Extended Carpathia Sequence” toward the bottom of the screen. The “Titanic in 30 Seconds with Bunnies” clip can be found in the Still Galleries menu – you’ll have to go through the menu, but keep an eye on the arrow in the middle of the screen. And the MTV Movie Awards clip is in the Marketing menu – keep an eye peeled toward the vest at the bottom right of the screen. Another indicator that these features are on the disc is in the DVD credits section on Disc 3.

With this big find, that leaves just the trailer gallery and the HBO First Look special."

A big, big thank you for this info. Looks like we've narrowed the search down a bit!

Info Wanted: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - a preservation?
Time

Actually, as has been explained time and again on the internet, the original 1977 release version was never officially released on home video until recently (and last year it was part of a 40th anniversary edition that contained the three major theatrical edits of the film), although Criterion’s edit, which substitutes 30 seconds of footage with UFO fly-by shots from the 1980 Special Edition (this particular edit has been shown in syndication) did at one point in time come close to the original as possible.

Incidentally, if you do have a working Laserdisc player and you can find the Criterion edition on eBay, play it. It will be worth it if not for the sake of comparison.

Info: Hips' titles - La Costa Nostra - The Complete Godfather Epic: 1901-1980
Time

I thought I’d begin a thread of my own, as long as we now have a section for preservation and fan edits.

First up: Has anyone here even considered doing a DVD-R preservation of the complete, chronologial “The Godfather”? I’m considering this for next year, using all known footage and, where possible, the DVDs and VHS releases. Only my version would be called “La Costa Nostra–The Complete Godfather Epic: 1901-1980”.

I mention this because this past week the Spike channel ran “The Godfather Saga” (the first two movies edited together).

i know its a long list, and i'm not expecting them all to be preserved on dvd. in fact i know most are already on dvd, just not criterion. i just think people are missing out on the great criterion commentaries supplied for these films.

I can help you here. I did a DVD-R version of "Close Encounters" using ALL known footage from all known versions of the film, plus all the Criterion supplements. It's on 3 DVD-Rs.

Somewhere I also have a tape of all the supplements of the Criterion "Wizard Of Oz". It has yet to be converted to DVD-R, but it is a prime candidate for a future project.

If you want "Close Encounters", this is no problem since this project was done a couple of years ago.

Right now I'm working a mammoth project...the reconstruction of the historic "Live Aid" concert. But if you're interested in "Close Encounters", I can set aside some time for you. Just
get in touch with me at hiphats@comcast.net and we'll talk terms privately.

I am interested in this too.
