D U N E - D E L U X E E D I T I O N ( R E L E A S E D )
Time

Same here. I am interested. PM me.

By the way, as now as known somewhere on this site, work has been completed on a new 185-min. fan edit of DUNE which I have seen (hopefully some announcement will be made elsewhere in this forum). Anyway some anonymous fan has created a new edit of the film using all known existing footage legitimately shot by David Lynch including material from the theatrical and Allen Smithee cuts of the film, and the outtakes first seen in the DVD release. It follows the structure of SpiceDiver’s “Alternative Edition” but otherwise avoids the objectionable edits of the Smithee cut, although some of the male narration had to remain in this new edit of the film for continuity purposes, and most of the prologue that was repurposed for SpiceDiver’s cut also remains.

Any questions, please PM me.

But here is what I can tell you…there is a new fan edit of DUNE that has just been completed. I have seen this edit, and compared to the other fan edits we’ve seen (Third Stage Edition, Spicediver, Michael Warren’s “complete saga”), this one is probably the first to bring together all known available legitimate footage David Lynch shot for the film (between all the video releases, the theatrical and Smithee cuts, and the outtakes) into one 185-minute edit. While this maintains the structure of the Spicediver “Redux” edit, all footage is there.

combination of the theatrical,tv version and all deletet scenes in only 185min??
that seems me to short…

You have to remember that although the TV version was touted as having “50 min. of never before seen footage”, it actually had only 35, not counting the repeated credits, cutback scenes from part I, the created-for-TV 7 min. prologue, and 5 min. of “cheated footage”. You also have to count the 17 min. of outtakes not in any cut of the film that only appeared on certain DVD and Blu Ray releases. All of the legitimately shot footage is in this new fan cut. None of the controversial changes and edits of the Smithee cut are in this edit. However, some of the male narration of that Smithee cut remains in the new edit only for continuity purposes. The SpiceDiver cut had some new sequences that incorporate most of the TV prologue cut into the plot proper…those scenes have been retained in the new edit as well.

As you fans probably know by now, DUNE is about to be reissued on 4K and Blu Ray in two deluxe editions, one by Arrow, the other by Koch.

Depending on what frame of mind you come from, Arrow has opted not to include the Allen Smithee extended cut. But the one SE to look out for is the Koch edition, to be released only in Germany. That edition will include not one, but two extended editions.

I have been in touch with “DuneInfo”, one of the guys involved with the Koch set. The Koch version will include the Smithee cut for the first time in an HD format, plus another version whose details can’t be revealed at this time.

What has also not been revealed is whether or not the Koch set will be region free.

I say this because all the other fan edits I have seen (some that claim to be complete) have material missing. This new edit is probably closer to the “final cut” David Lynch wanted but never had a chance to complete.

If you are interested in this new “anonymous Redux 2022” edit or if you have any questions, PM me.

Possible project - THE GOLDEN CHILD (1986) w/restored John Barry score
Time

As some of you already know, THE GOLDEN CHILD (hit movie with Eddie Murphy) has been announced for blu-ray release on December 1st as part of the “Paramount Presents” series.

So far there has been no word on any use or restoration of John Barry’s original score (one can only assume Paramount did/has not worked things out with the late composer’s estate).

With the technology fans now have with isolating sound stems digitally, it is therefore possible to construct a re-creation of a version of the film with Barry’s intended score as originally seen by test audiences.

Samples of scenes using Barry’s score are available at these URLs:

https://vimeo.com/350061123 (Opening of the film)
https://vimeo.com/347866248 (Tin Can Man sequence)
https://youtu.be/y4jvPxAnnAc (Kee Nang gets the arrow)
https://youtu.be/lG_1qjOT4v4 (Bottomless Pit)
https://youtu.be/ZPEag_b9UBM (The Safehouse)

Anyone open to this?

Info: a SUPERMAN Extended Cut - in 5.1 surround
Time

Kamdan said:

Has anyone made an edit of the Blu-ray’s theatrical cut with the 4K’s 5.1 theatrical sound? The video transfer for the 4K version sucked and the only perk was getting the original sound in 5.1 instead of 2.0.

I didn’t think so. The 4K came off the original camera negative, and it looks just as perfect now as it did when the few people saw it in 70MM in 1978. Sure, the picture looked dark, but maybe it’s just the TV brightness that needs adjusting.

Anyway, there is someone named Kathryn Ross who’s doing a remastered attempt of her own. She is currently mastering and enhancing S1 a la the STAR WARS Trilogy Special Edition with improved SFX and sound. Her Twitter handle is @kathymotion , and the thread is #supermanthefinalcut to learn more about it.

Info: a SUPERMAN Extended Cut - in 5.1 surround
Time

As you know, many years ago there was an attempt made by Alex Serpa to remix the extended 3:08 TV cut of SUPERMAN in 5.1 surround. While clips of this work still remain on YouTube, it never came to full fruition.

Here at this URL…

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=296761&page=95

…we may finally have a completed attempt to do such a mix. Some of you know that the current Warner Archive Blu-Ray of the TV cut has flaws of its own in terms of the sound mix. But this new attempt will hopefully address this issue.

The guy that’s doing it goes by the call sign “Croweyes1121”. I will keep you posted on this development.

STAR WARS is on TCM right now...which version is it?
Time

This is disappointing indeed since TCM generally shows films in their original aspect ratio. One time they showed MY FAIR LADY (filmed in Super Panavision) in a modified 16x9 ratio before they finally aired it in the correct ratio. Similar situation with AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS where they first aired it full frame (standard 4x3) before that finally aired in its 2.2:1 proper ratio. A rare case where TCM breaks the rules on its exhibition policy.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

This probably should fit into this category, and I think Harmy should take note of this.

It has been reported by MAB Hollywood’s Matias Bombal that the original 1977 version of STAR WARS will be screening at the historic Fox Theatre (now the Bob Hope Theatre) in Stockton, CA on Sunday, July 14, 2019. This will be a rare opportunity to see the original Episode IV in as close as possible to what audiences originally saw in 1977. The film will screen at 2 PM.

The information is at https://foxfriends.org/ .

Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV Released
Time

On this subject, folks…now that Disney owns Fox, there is a small, small chance that the 2020 reissue of the classic six films will bear the Fox opening logo.

As we know, the digital versions of all original six episodes (except Episode IV) do not have the Fox logo at the beginning, and the end title music to EMPIRE tracked onto the Lucasfilm logo.

It is important that every fan-made restoration of the original films should include the opening Fox logo in order to preserve the integrity of the original presentations.

Harmy, I hope you get this.

Superman I-III extended TV cuts & Info - Where have the Preservations gone? (Released)
Time

Well folk,

It is finally official.

http://www.iconvsicon.com/2018/09/25/superman-the-movie-to-receives-ultra-hd-blu-ray-to-celebrate-its-40th-anniversary/

It is not only here but all over the place. BTW it contains only the theatrical cut, no word yet on whether or not there will be a “definitive collectors edition” containing the TV and SE, so for now hang on to your Warner Archive blu ray of the latter two cuts.

P.S. I had a feeling the “Silver Screen Edition” trailer was a clue on what was to come. Now I await you guys doing your custom covers of the three versions.

Superman I-III extended TV cuts & Info - Where have the Preservations gone? (Released)
Time

UPDATE:

By now you know that there will be no Criterion Collection edition of STM. But, for at least a limited time, the CapedWonder site at capedwonder.com may have given us a clue as to what we could expect out of a 4K edition ( we can now assume this is an in house WB release). This ad is being touted as the “35MM Silver Screen Edition”, and it looks to be a crisp, colorful print at that. The announcer here sure resembles the original one from 1978.

If this is a personal project a la the “Star Wars 35mm Silver Screen Edition”, then whoever is behind this one sure did an excellent job with what he/she had to work with.

Remember, last year the CapedWonder site offered us the TV cut in pan and scan, and that was a clue on the eventual WB Archive Blu Ray issue of the cut in widescreen.

Your thoughts, fans…

WANTED: SERPA STEREO MIX OF THE TV CUT

If anyone, especially Alex Serpa, has at least an mp3 file of the complete stereo mix Serpa himself prepared for the extended TV cut (for the fan made project that eventually gave way for the Warner Archive blu ray), PM me.

There are still some excerpts of Serpa’s stereo remix work up on YouTube, such as here:

Superman I-III extended TV cuts & Info - Where have the Preservations gone? (Released)
Time

Ok, folks. Here is where we stand with all this…

STM is enjoying a revival in theatres this year. All three cuts have been shown in revival movie houses nationwide. This makes up for Fathom Events passing STM over for other films this year, such as “Grease” (probably on the merit of that film outgrossing STM as 1978’s top grossing film).

There are many possibilities for a proper 40th Anniversary Box Set of STM containing all three cuts of the film plus potential new supplements never before released on home video. So…

Criterion and Shout Select now have deals with WB, thus the floor is open.

  1. Criterion has until Sept. 15 to announce this title in time for the 40th Anniversary.
  2. Shout Select could announce this title at the upcoming Comic Con next month in San Diego.
    -or-
  3. WB could do this in-house in the manner of their 70th Anniversary Box Set of “Wizard of Oz”, but such an announcement would have to be made by the end of September.

If none of this happens, then it would have to be up to the fans to create their own “Disc 4” to supplement the three cuts that have been put on numerous DVD/Blu ray incarnations.

Keep in mind Alex Serpa has attempted a complete stereo remix of the TV cut as well as putting together a compilation documentary on the making of the film (that special is still up on YouTube). And Oliver Harper also did a commentary track on the 2000 cut (that too is on YouTube).

So fans, make your plans and tell all of us what you would do for a “ Disc 4 “. Here is a hint—much of what you would put in is on YouTube too.

Superman I-III extended TV cuts & Info - Where have the Preservations gone? (Released)
Time

OK, folks,

Hopefully starting this week we can trash all those DVD-Rs and VHS 115th-generation dubs of the TV cut of STM. Tomorrow (if all goes well) WB–and hopefully other outlets like Amazon, etc.–will ship out the STM extended blu ray.

Just to clarify after reading and researching other posts…look forward to a widescreen (not full frame) and 2.0 stereo release.

Now, I suggest for those who may be wanting to have other extended versions of the SUPERMAN movies, to please savor this release first. WB only has so much money in their bank to restore their evergreen films (look at what they’ve done to THE SEA WOLF, also an upcoming WB Archive release), and it takes time and a lot of effort.

Once we get our discs, that will be where the argument and excitement will end. So treasure the best, treasure what we got. And enjoy it.
