Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)
Time

A few weeks ago I decoded adywan's ESB 5.1 into individual AIFF files and checked it against the '93 mix from Belbucus.  (The timing of my mixes is the same as the '93.)  The synch definitely varies throughout the movie; I'm guessing the frame count of the video isn't 100% identical to the GOUT, though it's close.  The beginning and end of the movie were both in the vicinity of 8,000 samples (approximately 4 frames) late compared to the Belbucus track, while in the middle it was sometimes off by only half a frame, and other times around 2 or 3 frames.  Since it was always later, an initial delay on my mix would definitely be required--I would say somewhere around 170 milliseconds so that the largest discrepancies would be cancelled out, and the smaller variations in the middle will become late rather than sounding in advance of the video (which would be perceived as unnatural).

It's not a perfect solution, but it may be acceptable depending how sensitive you are to synch issues, and definitely better than using no delay value at all.  I may try this myself since I'm rather fond of what my version sounds like, and I was blown away by the picture quality adywan managed to achieve, though truth be told his mix sounds very good also--the only issues I have with it are some choices Lucasfilm made when mixing the SE.  For optimum results with his 5.1, I would recommend going into your receiver settings and reducing the output volume of the rear speakers by 3 decibels, since the SE's by default seem to have the surround channels at too high a level.  (Just don't forget to set them back to normal afterwards!)

Actually, what I've been considering would be to combine adywan's theatrical ESB video with my music-edited mix, since the picture is SE-based and not 100% authentic, while using the 'purist' version for dark_jedi's v3 GOUT, since it is from a transfer of the actual original movie.  I would then do the same with RotJ . . . which reminds me that I really need to obtain Harmy's theatrical version of that as well.  ;)

Beru's voice
Time

Her voice in that clip does sound like the stereo version of Beru's voice, except with English accent.  It's possible that the mono version could be her also, and just a different dub, but I can never really make up my mind what to think about that.

In the special edition (both '97 and '04 mixes), there is a strange audio dropout in the middle of her line "Luke's just not a farmer, Owen.  He has too much of his father in him."  The sound cuts out briefly just before the word 'father', even though it is the same take as in the older stereo mixes.  I don't know whether this was due to a problem with the source recording, or if it was a cheap and clumsy attempt to accent the word 'father' for some reason; regardless, it sounds rather stupid and is an obvious error.  The dropout is clearly visible in the waveform in addition to be being audible.

I'm going away for a few days, so I got these uploaded before I leave.  These are the same 'purist' ESB and RotJ 5.1 that were previously uploaded to nakido, but if you haven't yet obtained them or couldn't use the previous links then this is for you.  448 kbps ac3 contained in 5-part rar files.

Empire part 1: http://www.sendspace.com/file/oloqf8

Empire part 2: http://www.sendspace.com/file/tqj8ia

The music-edited versions are linked to in the first post of the thread along with (naturally) the SW 70mm.  All the links are still valid at this point; if any of them expire don't hesitate to ask for a re-upload.

Harmy's STAR WARS TRILOGY "Partly Despecialized Edition" HD. !!! These version are now obsolete - Look for Despecialized Editions instead!!!

Doesn't keeping the SE sandcrawler shot mean changing the timing?  Because as I recall that shot is significantly longer than the original.  The reason I ask is because it won't synch with the 70mm or any other GOUT-based audio tracks unless you shorten it to match . . .

Despite being a dude, I am not at all ashamed to admit that I enjoy Pride and Prejudice a great deal.  I particularly like the 5-hour BBC version with Colin Firth, but the recent movie was good too.  I've also read the book and had trouble putting it down.

Granted, I at first had to be convinced into it, but it's a damn fine story and I highly recommend it to everyone.

I've also seen something called 'Lost in Austen', which is kind of like a self-insert crack!fic version, but somehow that managed to be good also, in its own weird way.

The Star Wars Generation, in Pictures
Time

I still have an old shirt I got from the Star Tours store, with Vader pointing towards you that says:

I WANT YOU

FOR THE IMPERIAL FORCES

travel to exotic, distant galaxies, meet a wretched hive of scum and villainy . . . and disintegrate them

It doesn't come out that much now because it's about 14 years old and a bit small on me, but I still wear it sometimes.  One of my friends had it first, and I had to get one too when I saw it.  ;)

I believe it is based on anti-Vietnam army recruiting parodies about joining up to see distant lands and kill the inhabitants.

TheBoost is absolutely right--while the visual and audio changes to the movies can be very annoying at times, the most disturbing aspect is the revisionism of their history and reframing the context of the story into something that was never part of how it was created in the first place.  When watching the classic versions, it is best to firmly divorce all notions of anything related to the prequel films and let the story speak for itself.  This way, it maintains creative integrity and a greater degree of self-consistency.  Keep in mind particularly how it is a story about the adventures of Luke Skywalker, not some overblown 'tragedy of a whiny twit posing as Vader'.  This point is very important to the cultural context of the films.

If you have a decent ear, you'll also notice that the quality of sound mixing in the first movie was originally much better.  ;)

@ Mielr: I'm convinced that Youtube comment sections are the rubbish dumps of the internet, where the uninformed and imbecilic gravitate to compete for the title of dumbest person alive.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

You do realise, I hope, that content-wise it is very unlikely that the theatrical DTS 5.1 mixes contain any significant differences from what is on the SE laserdiscs.  The sound quality could well be superior to 384 kbps ac3, but the only thing truly different about them is that the LFE information will be stored in the surround channels, intended to be low-pass filtered out to the subwoofers, since bandwidth concerns prevent the bass from having its own channel.  There may also be some phase differences because of things like that, but only insofar as to be made optimal for the format.

Theatrical DTS is a different codec from the home video version anyway, so even if the timecodes could be read properly, putting it through your receiver or a software decoder wouldn't do any good.

Mono mix music edit - Did anybody notice this before?
Time

I noticed this the first time I ever heard the mono mix.

It is exactly as you describe, though it took me a couple listens to recognise precisely what was different about it.  I agree that the stereo versions' edit is better because it leaves the buildup intact--the first note of the fanfare itself is less critical to the cue.

There are quite a lot of differences in the mono mix beyond the obvious that no one has really pointed out before, this being one of them.  I've been thinking of compiling a complete list of everything that's been changed between the various mixes, which mostly means I'll be listening the mono in close detail.  It's not really my favourite, because I'm accustomed to the stereo and 70mm versions, so some of its changes sound like 'special edition fixes' to me even though they are from 1977, but it does make for an interesting alternate track.

Well colour me impressed, Harmy, that is some very convincing work you did there.  Obviously it's not completely seamless with the unavoidable smeared parts that are left and so on, but it really looks much better.  I'm frankly amazed that it works as well as it does.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

The thing that interests me most though if I'm honest, is the sound mix for each film in lossless audio and the potential benefits of using the blu-rays to further enhance fanedits.

I'll grant that higher quality source material will certainly increase the potential of fan projects, but having the eff'd up 2004 ANH mix in lossless does no one any good at all.  A higher resolution copy of absolute garbage is still absolute garbage, and unlike the image problems there's just no fixing it--it's beyond any salvaging.

I'm not the biggest fan of the '97 SE mix, since it has many unnecessary changes and rather less power than the original 70mm version, but if that was my only option for hearing any version of the movie I'd take it and be glad.  It still sounds like Star Wars, unlike the '04 which isn't even remotely recognisable.  And whatever even-more-remixed nonsense the Bluray comes up with will probably be even worse.

I had a dream about beating Rosh in the game. I guess I subconsciously really, really hate him.

lol.  He sure is an annoying little sphincterboy, isn't he?

I remember whenever one of us got to the part where Tavion pwns Kyle and Jaden in the cutscene at the end of the second act, the dialogue would go like this:

Tavion: Rosh!  Come.

Rosh: Yes, Tavion.

my roommate: *disgusting orgasm sound*

Cracked me up every time.  ;)

Now in the middle of Buffy season 2.  Even though there are great episodes later that exceed it

Surely you jest?

Well, the season 4 finale 'Restless' comes to mind, and 'Once More With Feeling' from season 6, but generally the best of later years tend to be individual episodes, while season 2 was the most consistently well written and watchable as a whole.

@ Gaffer Tape: Hey, I know what you mean about DS9.  Not only is the story itself bittersweet, it's very upsetting to come to the end of such a great show and not have any more to look forward to.  I had the same reaction when it was originally on and again when I watched the later seasons a few years ago.  Sometime I want to start from the beginning and see every single one, as you did.

I read some of the followup books, but with half the characters gone it's just not the same.
