Info: Ghostbusters 35mm
Time

DrDre said:

Although I agree that preserving 35 mm prints is very much worthwhile, and I believe home video releases should preferably have a color grading that echoes the theatrical experience, I do not completely agree with your last point. A print scan on a small screen does not reflect what is seen on the big screen. The color depth of a home release is much less, so things that in the darkness that can be easily seen in a theatre would disappear into blackness on a small screen. This is why home video color grading does have it’s purpose. So, although it is fun to watch a print scan on the small screen, I would not consider it the ultimate home movie experience.

You ask the question, what’s the correct contrast for the sky in Ghostbusters? I would say until our small screens are able to reflect the color depth of the big screen it is a matter of debate.

This just depends on how the preserver does the mapping when reducing the color space, contrast and black levels from the scan to the final format (a rendering intent of sorts). Personally I would trust the people here to do a better (read more accurate to the original theatrical version or whatever version happens to be the target) job than the makers of the home video releases. They are typically balanced toward the speed and profit side of the scale these days it seems.

Not that the job isn’t adequate in most cases, but when you really want to watch a special version of a film on a calibrated display in a light controlled room, this is a good place to visit to get that history and nostalgia.

The Hobbit: Condensed Edition - A 3 into 1 Fan Edit by brash_stryker

I'd very much like to see this, these cuts look very reasonable. I wonder though if there's a 2 or 2.5 hour movie in here somewhere. If someone did that without it feeling rushed, it would probably be my go-to version. Severe cuts to most movies would be required, but someone's gotta respect the bladders of the audience!

brash_stryker said:

I'm aiming to cut them all down to between 3 & 3.5 hours in length. One release will be a 1080p mkv, another of 2 separate Blu Ray disc images. The split will exist to keep the bitrate high, as well as serving as a sort of homage to the LOTR releases.

This sounds like an amazing project!

I'm a little confused by the two versions. Will there be a dedicated transition point for the two disc version? In other words are the three films becoming two, or are they becoming one (with the two disc version purely for quality)?

The IT BD looks nice/grainy and could be used as a base for this project.

Interesting color timing comparison of Se7en here:

Thanks for sharing this article, very interesting. Good to know that the flipper DVD is pretty close to the original, I remember seeing this film when it first came out and have watched the flipper DVD many, many times (I still don't even have a higher def version).

Info & Help Wanted: is there a way to color correct the ghostbusters blu rays to look like how spook central says it should look?
Time

Wow, those are some crazy comparisons! To me the 1999 DVDs are the best ones, but maybe it's because I've watched them about a thousand times.

I always remembered Ghostbusters being pretty dark films (TV, VHS, 1999 DVD). The 2014 Blu-ray is the closest to 1999, but all the teal and greed, damn.

The whole thing feels very revisionist to me (enhancing colors, huge contrast changes, etc.), stop messing with my memory :-p

Off the top of my head, from the extended editions of 1 and 2, I'd definitely include:

An Unexpected Journey

 • The small "feels like magic" exchange between Bilbo and Gandalf
 • Bilbo seeing the Shards of Narsil and talking to Elrond about staying in Rivendell
 • Bilbo and Thorin overhearing Gandalf and Elrond talking about the "strain of madness" in Thorin's bloodline

The Desolation of Smaug

 • Most of the added Beorn stuff, especially if he's featured more in the EE of Five Armies - of course, since I'd probably cut Dol Guldur and most (or all) of the White Council, I'd cut the Necromancer and Dol Guldur talk from these scenes
 • All of the extended Mirkwood scenes, including Gandalf's mention of a "dark enchantment" in the river
 • Bilbo vouching for Thorin in Laketown
 • The short bit of Bilbo, Balin and Thorin talking about the woods and birds that used to be on the hills by the Mountain

Other than that, I agree that most of the EE additions don't do much to help the film(s), but all of these seem very worthwhile to me, even for a single-film edit. (Plus, Bilbo is in all of these scenes, and is the focus of all except the Beorn and Mirkwood scenes, which, coupled with cutting out a bunch of extraneous crap, helps keep the focus on ... well ... the titular Hobbit.)

Very good I agree those scenes are well worth adding, pacing issues can be put aside a bit with fan edits, just like they were when Jackson started creating the extended editions anyway.

Don't constrain fan edits in ways other than trying to get a cut that is as pure to the book as possible, as that is what I think most people want with theses films.

Indeed. I would also prefer a more faithful version. The perception of the pacing in this case is probably somewhat dependent on the viewer.

Something I noticed in version 1.0 of Jedi is that around 37:02 into the movie the first group of 4 TIE fighters that come from behind the camera are supposed to vanish about 1 second before the scene cuts to the Emperor's shuttle landing in the hangar. This is how it was in the unaltered version, and I'm not sure if this is a change that too many people are aware of, but I noticed it when I was young and always pointed it out so I was rather devastated when they "fixed" it in the SE. Sorry to keep bumping this thread with questions and observations, but I've always been rather fascinated by Jedi since I love it so much. I've probably seen it more than the other two (except for Wars maybe) even though it's by far the worst of the three in my opinion.

I love the disappearing TIE fighters, when we watch in a group someone always points this out just before the scene change. We have done this as far back as I can remember.

OK, so I finally got around to trying out the 1080p to 720p script AntcuFaalb sent me a couple of days ago. It took me a while to figure it out, because I was getting some errors and then I had to figure out how to use VirtualDub, but that was pretty easy and it was well worth it, because the results are nothing short of amazing! Seriously, can you f*cking believe this?:

To my eyes the image on the right looks brighter and has more chroma noise. I might also call it slightly over-sharpened as well. The main question to me (which I learned from these forums incidentally) is how things look in motion, which can be quite a bit different from the individual still frames.

Still, amazing!

- "Introducing the Soundtacks"

I'd dearly love to include this one but I cannot with clear conscience attempt to do it myself - I could do the video side of it, but not the audio side and the script. The request for help with this still stands.

I thought hairy_hen was going to write the script for this? My apologies if it was someone else (or if he ran out of time) I can't find the original post and don't want to step on anyones toes.

I just really enjoy reading his posts on the subtle changes and differences in the various versions of the soundtracks and mixes. It always amazes me how much information he can discern about these things from just listening to them.

Your subwoofer won't be neglected, since your receiver will filter off the lower frequencies of the mix for it (DS mixes don't tend to be all that bass-heavy, but they can surprise you).

Technically isn't separation of the bass frequencies between mains and subs a function of the crossover setting in the receiver? For a properly balanced system the subs would take over just above the lowest reproducible frequency of the mains which would then be free to output only the range of sounds they are capable of.

For matrix mixes this is fairly straight forward since there is no discrete LFE data. I assume for discrete mixes, depending on where the crossover is set, part of the LFE data might actually be going to the mains, but I've never really thought about this (or tested it) before.

Hairy hen, what are your thoughts on watching the 5.1 mix on a sony soundbar with subwoofer? Im not a big audiophile and don't remember the exact specs but I know it has more than two speakers in the bar and is capable of decoding the main types of surround sound (the box listed all the types it was compatible with, and it was all the common ones you see on the back of DVDs and blurays).

As far as I know these bars mostly (all?) use phase trickery to simulate surround sound since all the speakers are physically in front of the listener. The ones I've seen usually have two inputs. A digital input (coax and/or optical) and stereo. If it were me, I would pick the stereo soundtrack and use the stereo inputs (as a 2.1 system).

I'm definitely interested in what Hairy hen as to say specifically about the processing that goes into converting the digital inputs to this "fake" surround. I seem to remember several recommendations in this and other threads about not folding down tracks specifically mixed for multiple (discrete) channels since this can introduce distortion and other bad things. My prediction (untested) is that you will get a more authentic listening experience going with stereo.
