Lucas Forced Himself To Write 'Episode III'

Whoa, whoa, whoa there! I never said I hate anybody. Chaltab, Bizzle, and Wajas: you guys need to calm down and not get so defensive. I don't know why everything has to be so polarized.

On this forum, people are categorized into two groups: they either 'HATE' Lucas or they 'LOVE' Lucas. I was just reading a forum talking about Kung Fu Hustle. People there either LOVED it or HATED it. If I go to a digital camera forum, people either say that Compact Flash is the best media option or that Secure Digital is ALWAYS superior. And what interests me is how emotional people get defending the side they choose to be on. But remember guys, things in life aren't so black and white. People can't be stereotypically placed in strictly one group or another.

You guys act like you know Lucas personally. But the truth is, none of us will ever know his true feelings or motivations. We can only make our own opinions based on the interpretations of what we read in the media. One thing that most of us can agree on is that Lucas' style of storytelling and the scope of the target audience has changed between the OT and the PT. The OT is what made Lucas as rich and famous as he is today. One can only wonder what would have happened if he had released these PT movies first, without the established fanbase of the star wars universe.

I feel that justInluck shows a lack of passion for this forum in the above post. He forced himself to write it based on the previous 'episodes' and his lack of finding a firm black or white stance leads me to believe he hates puppies and eats only the brown M & M's.

just thought I'd try and lighten this up a bit

I dunno. Assuming this whole "Lucas needs to get laid" thing isn't just a tasteless joke, nothing really surprises me with this group anymore.

I mean, this is the group where people complain endlessly about how Lucas has ruined Star Wars, yet then they turn around and buy the DVDs even though they know that set is just another crappy altered edition that they're just going to bitch and moan about later.

Though presented 'jokingly' I really DO think Lucas needs some adult companionship of a non-professional nature to keep him grounded. He seems to be de-volving, in a creative sense. I truly feel there is no passion behind the PT (or at least very little) and that he's just going through motions to make more money. I also truly feel that he probably does have some deep problems, the kind that can only come from lots of money and living in the fantasy, movie-mogul, celebrity world.

And again, for the record, I haven't bought any of the SE video stuff. I was given the '97 VHS box set as a gift by an un-knowing friend. In fact, I excitedly saw the '97 ANH SE in the theater, felt a bit violated by it and therefore didn't see the SE of ESB and ROTJ until given the aforementioned box set. So *some* of us hold out still.

And people will always gripe about stuff they love. Some more and some less, but if we didn't care then we wouldn't talk about it at all. Or read these forums at all. But the griping increases when one is faced with such a riduculous scenario as the simplistic release of a cleaned up original version of three films which helped to change the shape of world cinema.

Maybe its because the world just thinks of us griping fans as the type of people 'Triumph the Insult Comic Dog' interviewed in his SW bit on Conan O'Brien. The sad truth is I don't remember ever having seen a respected Hollywood insider, film critic or educator speak out publically about what Lucas has done. Now when LUCAS speaks out in favor of film preservation people listen. When the Hollywood community rallies against colorization of B & W films people sure as hell listened. But when a film festival makes a simple request for a print of original versions of the OT to show its place in film history it barely registers on the national radar. But you know what? I think ILM has much of Hollywood by the cojones. You don't want to mess with the company that we're going to pays lots of money to to make our summer blockbuster look pretty, do you? That's why I was so impressed when Peter Jackson came along and had his little independant team do the vast majority of the LOTR Trilogy work all by themselves. (and before you say it- yes I know ILM helped out with a bit of outsourced work on LOTR AND I know Jackson released SE's of his own films... along with the original theatrical versions).

geez I end up writing long posts, don't I

So, are all the Stormtroopers from IV-VI clones?..
Time
I think the disclaimer was probably good for the authors, as it gave them freedom to create ideas and situations without having to cross-check each point with Lucas in advance. That said, I feel for authors of the *later* books, who had to (from what I heard) stay within the context of whatever the previous authors had already laid down on the page.

Just found this while browsing StarWars.com:

Quote

The military soldiers unswervingly loyal to the Emperor, stormtroopers represented the most visible extension of Imperial might. They were shock troopers meant to strike with speed and accuracy, putting down insurrections and maintaining order on the farflung worlds of the Empire. Stormtroopers served both the ground-based armies of Palpatine's forces, and the space-based Imperial starfleet.

Stormtrooper training stressed complete indoctrination in the tenets of the New Order, and individuals would obey their officers without question, without regard to the rights of others or even to their own safety.

Stormtroopers abandoned individuality in exchange for their loyalty. They are completely encased in a white armored spacesuit shell, and are armed with blaster pistols or blaster rifles. Their helmets contain comlinks for long-range communications. Officers were denoted with colored shoulder pauldrons. Specific environments called for specially trained and equipped stormtroopers, such as the snowtroopers that besieged the ice world of Hoth and the lightly-armored scout troopers that patrolled the forests of Endor.

I know it doesn't answer any of these questions really, but it makes me think- at least at the time of its writing- that GL tends to think they are NOT clones. But maybe its just me.

Hmmm... well, IF you followed manufacturer's guidelines for ALL of that time... to the letter... and it still exploded...

Actually that would put the car maker in a unique situation- do they set actual 'life expectancies' on their products or are they willing to stand by them if the proper criteria are met.

And yes, I know that scenario isn't realistic... just theorectical

What do you mean?

And also, you couldn't concentrate a beam of light for that length. Another thing is that when they start up, with a real beam of light, it would just turn on, instead of gradually protruding. And light doesn't make a sound.

Unless the area you're in is filled with smoke or mist, any light beam of that sort *should* just appear as a bright dot on its intended target, ala a laser pointer or scope on a gun.

When scientists finally develop a working, hand-held laser 'gun' they are going to be required by law to put a sound effects chip in the weapon that, every time the trigger is pulled, goes 'Pweee! Pweee!"

LOL... yes dammit I thought of the E.T. reference just after I posted it...

It blew me away when I realized that Sarah Chalk was the 'replacement' daughter on later seasons of 'Roseanne'. She growed up real good!

It just dawned on me! After re-watching the 60 Minutes ROTS bit recently, I was struck by the fact that the host needled him about his love life (or lack thereof) and showed him as the devoted father that he is.

Not to be crass, by methinks GL just needs to get LAID.

Perhaps all these dumb decisions come from living a secluded billionaire life (ala Michael Jackson) with no one around him but young kids and yes-men. I'm sure GL has some abandonment issues and perhaps they've manifested in this 'only child-ish, I won't share' attitude of his. Perhaps, and only perhaps, ole GL hasn't had a 'normal' relation with a woman since the OT came out and his refusal to acknowledge the original versions stems from his wanting to close these personal chapters in his life. Maybe this is some type of mental blocking- maybe he's not telling us that his *work* before then doesn't exist but instead his *life* before that doesn't exist.

Steven Speilberg- buy your friend an escort. A really hot one. Or at least get a nanny for the kids and let him go to Vegas for a month or so. The company will exist without him for a bit.

Heh heh- that is IF you've bought the DVD set yet, which I haven't. No, I was referring to all the money spent from 1977-1997 after which Lucas decided the OT 'didn't exist'. The movies didn't exist and yet he gladly accepted our cash for anything related to them. Anything bought after 1997 would NOT be included in the refund request.

Didn't you hear??? GL is going to re-release the 'Holiday Special' but, in addition to adding Jar-Jar and *his* family celebrating Life Day, GL is digitally adding Woody Allen and Shirley Temple. I think I read this on Yahoo! or something...

I wholly agree. In fact I'm not a fan of stupid frivolous legal action at all. BUT I do think that if enough people did write letters asking in a pointed way that someone might notice. I also know the news media, with its great desire to fill hours and hours of emptiness with dumb stories until they decide to actually report some real 'news', likes to latch on to stuff like this so a new 'refund' letter campaign may actually show up on the national radar.

Do I *really* think I (or we) deserve a refund? Of course not. That would be idiotic on my part; I knowingly gave my money then based on the entertainment value at the time. I still do, though much more carefully (that's what spouses are for!).

Do I *really* think a letter campaign would make a difference? Eh, not really. I mean look at all the hard work that went into the OT.com and the petitions and such. Lucas like so many before him are 'above' us. They live in their billionaire bubbles and don't, by their own admission basically, give a flying fig about a one of us as long as we keep buying. And when we STOP buying they still don't really care about us, they just try creating another product that will make another demographic start buying some other stuff. Its business pure and simple.

Maybe I'm just in a cynical mood this morning though. There must be *some* magic left in the franchise- I was at Target the other day and there were two young boys, about 8 and 11 years old, who were trying to figure out which ROTS toys they wanted to buy. They were genuinely excited and it didn't seem they were being pushed into the excitement by geek parents (like some of us though I'm not a parent yet). The older boy saw me looking at the same toys and asked me 'Are YOU into Star Wars TOO???'. And you know, instead of feeling old like I normally would have, it actually was kind of heart-warming. And whereas my gut wanted me to say... "kid, I was into the REAL Star Wars waaaayyyy before you were born" I instead just grinned and said "yeah- its pretty cool, isn't it?".

But I digress I think...

On the part of the droids, it was likely a memory wipe. Remember 3PO constantly rambling on in ANH about how R2 claims to have been the property of "a Captain Antilles"? Well, 3PO doesn't remember it. I say it's a memory wipe and it didn't completely take with R2.

Most likely Threepio was running on a typical unstable Microsoft operating system and his memory was wiped just about every time he so much as bumped into a wall. R2, on the other hand, was probably Linux which assured that most regular users wouldn't even know how to completely wipe his memory.
