You can listen to the whole story online at NPR.org in today's 'Morning Edition' section. Great story... veddy interestink! I posted the direct link towards the end of this thread.

ROFL!! I have a ferret named Pippin!!!!! He's our first and of course if I'd have bought another at the time it'd have been 'Merry' (of course we now also have a pair named Butters and Cocoa but that's another story)

A: Because it gives women that "new car" smell.

So THAT'S why I like leather on women so much... now I know!

"As far the Lucas/Jackson comparison. I think its pretty accurate. As stated the actions of each were not being compared (changing a movie/supposedly molesting children)."

Funny how such an obvious point was so easily missed.

Now that I think about it, maybe that comparison is a symptom of age. When I, a 33 year old, think of Michael Jackson I think of 'Thriller' and him at the height of adult popularity and kids walking around in red 'Billie Jean' jackets, etc etc. My mind tuned him out almost completey after that and all I ever heard was the wacko-jacko stories, or urban legends or whatever. So Darth Simon's take on it was exactly what was on my mind. Hmm... go figure. I forgot that the under 20-25 crowd would probably ONLY know him as a crazy suspected child-molester. (and don't jump me for saying 'suspected' folks... that's not what this thread is about- take it elsewhere if you want to debate that)

Thanks again to all here, both young and old for posting your comments. Interestingly, NPR's 'Morning Edition' show had some ROTS stories today (of course) but one focused on a biography (that I think is coming out soon, I'll check on the details on the replay) of Lucas that takes much of the same stance that many of us do- that GL is/was an incredibly talented creator and idea man who was (in the biographer's words) 'destroyed' by his creation.

The biographer likened GL to the fictional character of Charles Foster Kane, of whom the film 'Citizen Kane' was about. Its a very valid comparison I think. If you haven't seen the film give it chance some day and see why its a classic, but watch it with GL in mind. Makes the story of GL seem much more tragic.

Also, the age division question was more of a curiousity on my part. We all fall in love with whatever it is we grew up with. My first James Bond was Roger Moore, as that's who I saw in the theaters first. That said though as I watched the other Bond films I was able to recognize that to my mind Sean Connery was a superior Bond- though Moore is always my fondest movie-going memory of Bond. And Christopher Reeve as Superman, etc, etc, etc.... you get the idea.

Wait- what the hell am I posting for??? I have to get in line for ROTS... lol

Basically, people who love Star Wars have their own individual vision about it. A perfect example would be all of the Extended Universe books that have been made over the years.

That being said, a lot of people don't like the remakes of the OT, or the prequels. And some of these people that feel this way have made re-edits for the first two prequels to sort of put in the image the way they thought it should have been. I think it's a pretty cool of people who do that myself, because the endeavor they go through doesn't earn them anything other than a 'thanks' since they cannot recieve money for their troubles.

As far as your comparison, it all comes down to choice. If someone likes one of the re-edits that Magnolia Fan has done (which I do ), or the one Trooperman is working on, they can ask for it and have that choice. But if they like the unedited prequel the way it came out in theatres, they can go to a store and buy it. However the same can't be said about the Original Trilogy. There are only the 97 Special Editions and the 2004 DVD Editions, not the originals. Were the originals avaiable to the public readily, I doubt this board would be half as populated as it is now.

Well stated as usual, A.M.

It all boils down to choice. GL is indeed entitled to make as many changes to his own property as he likes (of course) and I can't remember anyone here saying he didn't have the right to. All I (we) ask is to have the option of having the originals treaty with the dignity that they deserve.

I don't feel that is too much to ask. And if we didn't love them in the first place, we wouldn't ask at all.

Actually, when the lemmings were snapping up the new OT DVDs, I satisfied my cravings by going out and buying a definitive collection LD set off of Ebay.

WOOT!

Every sale of these new DVDs is a message to Lucas that his changes are valid. Screw him. I know my personal boycott won't make a difference in the end, but at least I'm true to myself.

And that's all any of us can ask, Omega! And welcome to the boards!!!!

*sigh*

Quite an emotional stir here. Glad I can raise some dust.

Of course I didn't mean to characterize GL as a child molester. That's a ridiculous assumption. I will admit that perhaps the timing of that comment was off a bit with the Jackson trial, but I don't see that anyone who has commented took it that way Bizzle. Klingon_Jedi is spot on with his comments. But fame and extreme amounts of money can work wicked ways on people, even the most innocent and creative. And I find it hard to believe that anyone who has worked and lived in conditions similar to Lucas, Jackson, Hughes, Bill Gates, etc etc etc can really have a firm grasp on what us- the common folk (take that as you will)- feel and want in life. No one here is starting a jihad against GL; instead we debate and joke and speculate and ramble as any group of friends who share similar interests would. We express opinions. Very few people here express their opinions in a manner that pretends to be *fact* or even superior to other's opinions. But occasionally one pops in. Such is life. But how can anyone respect the opinion of someone whose stance is "you guys are dickheads because you express opinions"? I find it hard to.

One thing I like about the OT.Com forums is that most of the comments seem to be from educated, worldy individuals who love the subjects that they talk about. Even if some (myself included) like to poke fun at things and occasionally run rampant with analogies. There are plenty of websites where one can read endless posts of 'this sucks', 'that sucks', 'you suck', 'he/she/it sucks' if that's what you enjoy reading. I personally don't. So I'll stick around and I'd wager others will too. At least Bizzle's posts are expressed like an opinion- I can respect that.

I'll be like "Marc, whatever you do, don't look at it. Shut your eyes Marc, don't look at it no matter what". Speakers start to blow up, the ushers are being lifted
off the ground by the apparition, then the apparition lifts it's head, disolves from GL to a horrid skull-like JarJar. The president of the local GL fan club screams "Oh my God this movie's AWFUL!!" then his head melts. Then another GL flunkie grabs his head and screams, and his head blows up.

This looks pretty cool!

Star Wars Poster Book

Quote

One of the very first Star Wars posters had no images at all—just enormous block letters that announced, "Coming to Your Galaxy This Summer: Star Wars." The rest is history. Now, 28 years later, the 350 most amazing Star Wars movie posters are collected for the first time. This compilation spans the surreal to ultra realistic, the campy to darkly serious: Darth Vader's head exploding in a shower of camera parts; Anakin Skywalker casting an ominous Sith shadow; C-3PO and R2-D2 selling Star Wars shoes; Luke and Vader in mortal battle aboard the Death Star. Classic posters are joined with text by the world's foremost Star Wars collector, Stephen Sansweet, and poster collector Peter Vilmur, behind-the-scenes stories from artists and designers, a scarcity guide to over 2,000 posters, and a bootleg identification guide. Exploding with color, The Star Wars Poster Book illuminates an unexplored corner of Star Wars history.

Yep. I know someone somewhere will (and has I think) write a textbook on the specific differences, but it all boils down to:

comic books = manga

animation = anime

and- LOL- DON'T get the pronunciation debate started! I managed a comic book/anime store for several years and had to listen to the "it's pronounced MON-GUH" arguement way too many times...

Ooops- hadn't read this read in a few days. Guys, Nausicaa IS available in the U.S. in its manga form. It came out in single comic form many moons ago and Viz collected it into graphic novels about the same time they began to publish Ranma 1/2.

These were the editions I had bought (whick are now out of print but should be available at many comic stores):

Nausicaa Perfect Collections

And it looks as if a new publisher is currently printing volumes at $9.95 a pop:

George Lucas is probably more sane than any twat on this board. After all, I don't see him sitting around on a message board whining like a frickin' baby because he didn't get his way. Get out and perhaps find a girl and stop whining because some filmmaker you don't even know didn't give you what you want. That's truly sad. Insulting Lucas doesn't change a damn thing, and it's not going to help you get what you want.

Y'know what else is pretty pathetic? Your coming onto a messageboard where people do nothing but whine and bitch that they don't get their way just to whine and bitch about their whining and bitching. That's a bit hypocritical, don't ya think?

And also joe_H you will please note that in this case we (and I specifically) were letting Mr. Lucas' words speak for themself. That is not to say that I won't partake in dime-store psychoanalysis with the best of them and have done so elsewhere in these forums. You on the other hand chose both the wrong thread and the wrong approach (IMHO) to elaborate your opinion. Or perhaps YOU have some issues yourself that we could help you with. We'd be glad to. Being a 'member' of these forums for the length of time that you have (since August 2004) would tend to indicate that you have an interest in the OT. Perhaps you are just now in another stage of denial as to the decisions that GL has made regarding the releases of the OT. Are you having relationship problems? Are you being taunted unmercifully at work or school and thusly need to turn around and spew your pent-up wrath at a group of people who truly love some of the things that GL has created? If so (and as a dime-store therapist I can guess this to be the case) there are many ways you can find help and support. Did the homely girl in the next cubicle at work reject your advances because you have a toy Jar-Jar on your desk next to your stapler? Did you perhaps get harassed in your high-school because, under your long black faux-leather trenchcoat, you were wearing a Babylon 5 t-shirt? Or maybe- just maybe- you are hiddenly ashamed by the odd stirring in your loins whenever you see Ewan McGregor extend his long, shiny Jedi weapon.

Either way- we accept you. You'll get through this joe_H.

Now be a good lad and go start your own thread.
