how long does it take to train a jedi?
Time
I'll even add that Luke, IMHO, was a much superior Jedi candidate than Lucas ever portrayed Anakin to be. How?

1) Luke naturally took to the lightsaber and with only a few verbal cues from Obi-Wan was able to 'see' using the living Force.

2) Prior to his introduction into the 'larger world' of the Force, Luke was a whiny brat. The more he used the Force the less and less whiny he got. (again think PT Anakin here)

3) Luke, with no 'canon' evidence that Obi-Wan continued to 'train' him after the events of ANH, trained HIMSELF enough to not only seem wiser by the start of ESB but also to be able to use the Force to move objects (in the Wampa lair).

4) That said, Yoda- despite his reluctance at first to want to train Luke- already had a good starting point with what Luke had already learned on his own.

5) Again with no 'canon' evidence (discounting SOTE which I have forgotten what little I knew about it) to the contrary, it would *appear* Luke continued his own training after the events of ESB. By the start of ROTJ he was a bad-mamma-jamma and after the Jabba affair he went *back* to Yoda to 'complete his training' Yoda tells Luke "No more training do you require. Already know you that which you need." Again, IMHO, by watching the PT I somehow doubt Anakin could have done that.

So basically what I'm saying is that Luke was an aberration but in a good way. In fact I'd even go as far to say that he... raised in more ways than one as the son of a planet of two suns... may be (by actions and not by Lucas' words) the closest to a 'chosen one' that the SW series had to offer.

As for 'old school' Jedi training... good question. The horrific editing and pacing of the PT coupled with the lack of revelation to any of the 'behind-the-scenes' Jedi training gave no clue as to the time period of standard training. Perhaps the Jedi just sit around in a circle and muse about the Force until experience walks in and smacks them in the face.

So why Define STAR WARS as OT OR PT?
Time
Well Shim it all depends on your definition.

The American Heritage Dictionary defines 'fan' as:
Quote

NOUN: An ardent devotee; an enthusiast.

ETYMOLOGY: Short for fanatic

and 'Fanatic' as:
Quote

NOUN: A person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm, as for a cause.

ETYMOLOGY:
Latin fanaticus, inspired by orgiastic rites, pertaining to a temple, from fanum, temple.

So yes, if you consider a Star Wars 'fan' to be "a person marked or motivated by an extreme, unreasoning enthusiasm" then I will proudly say that I am NOT a fan- nor would I want to be.

On the other hand, to say (or imply) that one cannot enjoy *parts* of a body of work without blindly appreciating the entirety of the work is, IMHO, ludricrous.

Also, as you said
Quote

there is a difference between dislikeing one or 2 film and hating half of them.

I would have to point out that yes there IS a difference. A ONE or TWO FILM difference. And that is NOT being a 'fan' per Mr. Tony's definition. Vis a vis if you dislike even ONE of the films, then you too aren't a fan. You're one of us...

Why Direct?

You're probably on to something here! Good theory DAS!

I love this comic! :D

I think the thing I like best about Foxtrot is that the author, while trying to reach out to general audiences mostly, is not afraid just to be the geek that he is (and we are!) and give us jokes that many people would not get. Aside from the great Star Wars riffs, he includes all sorts of fun references to other films, video games, etc.

SW, Copyrights, and The Library of Congress

Hey there IPDroid! Welcome....

Good comments- the only thing I would add is that on most studio produced films, the *studio* is considered the *author* of the motion picture and not the director. The tiny little disclaimer usually appears at the very end of the credits. I don't totally agree with this, but when so many hands go into making a film there really is no clear 'author'. C'est la vie.

MagnoliaFan Edits: Ep I "Balance Of The Force", and Ep II "The Clone War" (Released)

Here's a question for you guys:
Do any of you know of a film where Liam yells "No!".
I would really like to fix that "Anakin! Anakin! Noooo!" thing in II where they have Frank Oz voice the "Nooooo!" and try to claim its Liam.

I believe he had a line such as that (and maybe other usuable ones) in the first Darkman!

(wow- and find a place for the line "TAKE THE F***IN ELEPHANT!!!"... LOL)

Idea: Library of Congress Film Preservation access?

Exactly! That's the whole idea. In fact, perhaps someone at the LoC who is working towards preserving these films would see the benefit in such a project and would be willing to do what it takes to help out. After all the effort and money several projects and individuals here are putting into the LD efforts I'm positive that there are those who are up to the challenge. It would have nothing to do with LFL- just between the LoC and whomever helps the preservationists.

Pay particular attention to item #2.

Idea: Library of Congress Film Preservation access?
Time

I posted this in a thread in General Discussion but thought it might fit here as well!

OK guys- this could be our angle!!!

The 1977 version of ‘Star Wars’ is a registered film of the LOC’s National Film Registry http://www.loc.gov/film/titles.html

Congress has voted and the President recently signed into law a bill S.167 which covers, among other interesting things, the public’s right to film preservation via the NFR (please note my bold text):

Title III: National Film Preservation - Subtitle A: Reauthorization of the National Film Preservation Board - National Film Preservation Act of 2005 - (Sec. 302) Amends the National Film Preservation Act of 1996 to expand the use of the National Film Registry seal, which indicates that a film has been included in the Registry and is the Registry version of the film, for use on other approved copies of the Registry version of the film. Allows only the copyright owner or an authorized licensee of the copyright owner to place the seal on any film or other approved copy of the Registry version of a film selected for inclusion in the National Film Registry in the case of mass distributed, broadcast, or published works.

Directs the Librarian of Congress, in consultation with the National Film Registry Board, to:

(1) carry out activities to make films included in the National Film Registry more broadly accessible for research and educational purposes and to generate public awareness and support of the Registry and the comprehensive national film preservation program;

(2) review the comprehensive national film preservation plan, and amend it to ensure that it addresses technological advances in preserving, storing, and accessing film collections in multiple formats; and

(3) whenever possible, undertake expanded initiatives to ensure the preservation of the moving image heritage of the United States by supporting the work of the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center of the Library of Congress at Culpeper Virginia, and other appropriate nonprofit archival and preservation organizations.

Increases the number of members on the National Film Preservation Board, the maximum number of members-at-large that the Librarian may appoint, and the number of members required for a quorum.

Directs the Librarian to utilize the National Audio-Visual Conservation Center to ensure that preserved films included in the Registry are stored in a proper manner, and disseminated to researchers, scholars, and the public as may be appropriate in accordance with U.S. copyright law and the terms of any agreements between the Librarian and persons who hold copyrights to such audiovisual works.

Extends the prohibition on the unapproved use of the National Film Registry seal to any format of such a film.

Reauthorizes provisions regarding film preservation.

^ So as I read it, should this go through, that if we can prove the obvious- that GL considers that the 1977 version “doesn’t exist”- than it is up to the public film preservationists to save ‘Star Wars’ from being erased from our history.

Thoughts? Read more details yourselves at the links above. I really think this would be somewhat do-able! Who’s up for it???

Wouldn't be needed- just say that she died after giving birth to her kids as she was traumatized after hearing rumors that Han, her husband, had actually shot first and killed a wannabe bounty hunter in cold blood! Maybe she even thought there was still good in him....

Harrison Ford needs to shave. I don't know why you would put on a tux and not shave.
