Maybe that's why the films starred kids- so that their heads wouldn't be cut off the screen in the cinema!

(anybody remember the TV series 'Police Squad!' that the 'Naked Gun!' movies were based on? There was a really tall character who always had his head cut out of the shot.... lol!)

Actually not really. The most common type of film stocks are in the essentially 4:3 ratio. Take for instance 35mm film stock- there is no difference (other than audio tracks) between 35mm *movie* stock and 35mm *still* stock. What filmmakers generally do is only compose their shots in the center area of the frame. Some cameras physically block the top and bottom of the screen and others shoot the whole image only to be cropped later. In the latter case when a film is composed for widescreen there might be things off-frame that the director does not want to be seen (there's a bit in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure in which he pulls a unrealistically but humourously long chain out of his bicycle's cargo box- shown in widescreen the effect works but the 'fullscreen' version allows you to see that the bottom of the box is hollow and the chain is being pulled up from off camera, thus ruining thr image.) OAR traditionally was a matter of *choice* rather than size of film stock. In fact as rare as it is, some film directors actually *choose* to use the whole film frame for composition even though they know that in theaters some of the image will be lost! Stanly Kubrick did just that in 'The Shining'. That is why the director-authorized DVD of 'The Shining' is 4:3... Kubrick uses the entire frame effectively to convey mood instead of just leaving useless space at the top and bottom.

Of course there are a gazillion exceptions to what I've said, as I'm sure many people will point out.

The nutshell is that the Ewok movies were probably shot 35mm (or at least no more than 70mm) and in that UK theartical run the image would have been cropped down to fit the cinema screen. Sorta the same but opposite of how we understand Pan and Scan and fullscreen movie releases.

Honestly I've never seen it either, and I'm a Bruce Willis fan! ALL I remember about the film when it came out was the controversy about how, after seeing the dailies, balding Bruce Willis supposedly insisted that his receding hairline get digitally painted over to look not so bald.

Actually this is the first real controversy/situation I can remember regarding CGI and/or digital painting being used to 'doctor' a film- with the exception of colorization and the whole Ted Turner fiasco.

I never could get into that show. Not that I tried too hard, but all my friends loved it and were always trying to get me to watch it.

I guess part of what put me off was them telling me I had to watch all the previous episodes to figure out what was going on in the middle of the series run.

And, as a part-time video editor myself, I will say if you don't have the 'bug' for editing than you can never really understand how addictive it is. Here I can understand GL, MagFan, etc's feelings- when an editor is given raw materials, no matter how crappy they may be (ie wedding footage, vacation footage, the PT films), you have a burning desire to play and tweak and design and redesign and so on and so on...

I have spent too many nights literally awake ALL NIGHT just working on a scene or two- much to my wife's chagrin.

I have friends who are the same way with video games, building models or many other hobby pursuits. Do they consume your life? No, not usually. Can you waste some of your time working on your hobbies? Sure. Does it hurt anyone? Nope.

Klingon_Jedi hit it on the head about this debate though- if you don't like what you're reading... STOP reading it! Turn the channel! That's one of the things that sets the OT.Com forums apart from so many others- as a whole people are civil and get along, or if they don't they just post where they can be constructive. I hope it stays that way.

What about you? The moment when you "divorced" from the Lucas policy about SW?
Time
The Star Wars trilogy had just become sorta a fond memory for me prior to the '97 SE's. I had bought the Definitve laserdisc set which satisfied me at the time but when the SE's came out I started to worry. And then the rumblings that the OT 'didn't exist' anymore started from GL and I assumed he had fallen over the proverbial edge.

Then the PT. Saw 'em all in the theater on opening day, gave them chances, liked 'em less and less. And now here we are.

So why didn't he do it in ROTS then?

Does anyone else but me *cringe* every time Hayden pronounces the word 'master' in the PT? <<shudder>>

Super Healing Obi-Wan!

The sad thing is it not only lands on him, but pushes him several feet!!! I would have at least liked him to be in a healing tank like Luke in ESB or something.

Come to think of it, people in general just seem to suffer more 'real' damage in the OT vs the PT- in the PT you'd think you were watching Futurama (vastly superior IMHO ) where limbs and heads get cut off and stuck back on with little consequence.

I suppose that's much of what bugged me about the PT. The use of CGI along with the 'idea' that the Jedi are all now super-jumpy-twisty-hero types just adds to the cartoon nature of the films. That's great if you're filming 'The Mask' but not if you want to draw audiences into a story. There's just no weight to anything in the films.

War of the Worlds

Originally Independence Day was released on July 4th, and all the teaser posters shortened the name to ID4.

The studios like people to be able to refer to their films in a 'hip' and 'catchy' manner- started with Terminator 2 (aka T2), resulting in X-Men 2 being called 'X2', and amusingly the studio trying it with 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' by thinking people would call it 'LXG' (obviously they couldn't spell or thought calling it 'LEG' would just be silly... lol)

Super Healing Obi-Wan!

I can't remember seeing anyone else mention this, but it has bothered me at every viewing of ROTS. Why the hell isn't Obi-Wan paralyzed and/or in traction for the rest of his life?

During the ROTS Dooku duel, when Dooks sends Obi flying across the room and he crashes into the catwalk, Obi would have been hurt. BUT, to add insult to injury, when the catwalk falls down on Obi-Wan IT CLEARLY LANDS ON HIS PELVIS AND PUSHES HIM ABOUT 5 FEET ACROSS THE FLOOR! For someone who was nearly unconcious already (or even not) this would have not only pulverized his pelvis and legs but most likely severed the lower half of his body!

For those of you who have the ability to, go and re-watch this. Seriously now... c'mon. Obi was toast! But instead Anakin declares "He seems to be all right. No broken bones, breathing's all right." LOL... riiiight! PUH-lease!
