Geez Warb, aren't you the one who busted my chops for putting my old Halloween thread up in, like, Sept. this year? Then it was too early, now its too late? I think *somebody* was never taken trick-or-treating as a kid!

Seriously though thanks for keeping me up to date on the months. I forgot we were only allowed to talk about timely stuff here even if its something that means a lot to us. I'll try to follow the rules more better next time.

Halloween
Time
(as before, the holiday NOT the film series)

So yeah I'm a Halloween geek. Its fun to be a home haunter though!

And its never too late to share- here in no particular order are shots from my 2005 Halloween display... already planning next year. Any other nuts in our community?

Almost all this stuff was made from scratch from bits and pieces either scavenged from trash bins or bought at thrift stores, Home Depot and the like.

A More Elegant Weapon, a More Civilized Age

And really though I had hoped that that duel, of ALL the duels in the Star Wars series, would have been the ultimate mind-f**k rather than anything close to what got produced.

But hey- we should all just be thankful that there was even lava involved. The way everything else went I'd have not been surprised if GL would have had the final duel on Tatooine or maybe in another Droid Factory somewhere.

I agree with so many points in this thread but am left with an observation and a question.

Observation: Now that I think about it I would have personally nominated ROTS for an Academy Award IF, as Anakin and Obi did the ridiculous twirly moves, Obi would have just shut down his saber, casually pulled out a pistol and shot Anakin dead.

Question: Who did that version of the Imperial March Rave? I want it! (And yes, I have and love the Meco one as well!)

Maybe the better one has it the more time one has to think about things like going on strike rather than just having to do one's job? I dunno.

Tell that to the metro workers when they were on strike in NYC this month.

I meant nothing by it. I'm not in nor have been in any job or industry supported by unions so I'm not really for or against them. As a rule though I have been taught that hard work will generally be rewarded and I'm not a big one for having other people fight my battles for me. Just an old-fashioned work ethic thing I know.

Green screen, CGI and the 'Minute' documentary from ROTS

I agree and that's why I try to blame the actors as little as possible for these mistakes. I know that Liam, Ewan and Natalie are excellent actors given the right situations and guidence. I haven't seen Hayden in anything else and have no idea based on AOTC or ROTS if he has potential to be a good actor- there were too many variables against him. What was probably needed to meet GL's new style of filmmaking were not so much 'actors' as people good at improv- that's why 'The Green Screen Show' (or either version of 'Who's Line Is It Anyhow' for that matter) work so well. A good improv artist usually ONLY has the very vaguest of ideas thrown at them and usually NO props and have to not only create an entire 'world' to themselves but ALSO have to believably project that world to an audience. Of course GL wouldn't have liked people running with his ideas like they do in improv but the performances would have been so much better.

That and some actors are just used to it. Ian McDiarmid is not a better actor than any of the other of the cast and yet to me he comes off just thatmuch more skilled- but then again its old hat to him. He's played the role, he knows GL's style and he seems comfortable just saying and doing whatever.

And as far as the tennis ball, Tom Hanks did pretty well with a volleyball for a co-star.

Teachers, being one of the most underappreciated professions in this country, have often been reduced to having to pay for many of the basic tools that a professional needs to do their jobs. Its my understanding that this comes from a combination of many budget factors but no matter how its looked at its totally ridiculous. Its bad enough that teachers are expected to be surrogate parents and that they are supposed to take crap off of every student and now be allowed to say anything or do anything in return but then to expect them to have to buy their own supplies... another symptom of our whacked-out society.

Holograms...

I don't know. Considering the solution GL used to get around this scene in the original release (making Greedo's scene tell the same info) I don't really need to see it at all. But that's not what we're talking about is it?

The hologram issue is yet another technology inconsistency issue found throughout the entire series. But hey- its just fantasy, right?

The truth about remakes...
Time
As not to get my blood pressure up this morning...

Here's my personal rule of thumb for remakes:

If you set out to remake a MOVIE (basing your remake on the original film), its probably a bad idea. If you are going back to the source material (book, etc) and trying to do what you think is a better job then you *might* be ok (or even if it sucks your heart might be in the right place.)

I finally saw Burton's 'Charlie' and I'll agree that is was closer to the novel- a much more literal translation in many ways. But I personally find the Wilder film to be a more enjoyable movie overall. That said, any one of us can read the same book and visualize it different ways- that's the joy of reading. Its when filmmakers try to stamp their book-based product as 'definitive' that I have to laugh. Remember the year of 'Bram Stoker's Dracula' and 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein'? Funny I though both of those author's long dead. And what I saw was 'Francis Coppolla's Dracula' and 'Kenneth Branaugh's Frankenstein' neither of which were much like my reading of the novels. Luckily *that* trend ended quickly.

I realize new ideas are very rare (if not nearly impossible) but I'd rather see a well-executed 'knock-off' or derivative film than a crappy film with a familiar name.

And there ARE exceptions that I like of course. I love Carpenter's 'The Thing' but then again I also love 'The Thing From Another World'. Both are great cinema IMHO. And yes, Cronenberg's 'The Fly' is awesome as well and makes an entirely different type of film. But what do those have in common? Great filmmakers! Those are directors who busted their chops making original pictures and then decided to work on labors of love. And it shows. I'm still torn about the need for PJ's 'King Kong' but I have heard its well done and it was a labor of love. Hell, PJ is a bigger geek than most of us. Then again geeks with huge budgets can be dangerous at times.

More later...

Idea: 'The Shadow' - a Widscreen DTS version?
Time
I actually enjoyed the film too, with a few exceptions... like his magically growing nose! C'mon Baldwin... if you're gonna play the role have it one way or another.

I appreciated the film being set in the correct time period though. There were several nice touches... but as I haven't seen it since the theatrical run I really should re-watch it some time.

I couldn't quote it because I didn't want to start laughing out lous to myself at work. Priceless!

'American Dad' I do find very watchable, if not as memorable.

PS: And maybe 'Hulk' jokes are just funny, but the whole Stewie gag with the walkig out of the room to the Bill Bixby/Hulk theme and the end credits bit with Stewie hitchhiking... ahhhahahaaaaa.

Eh, a small amount of moments like those are usually needed, and ROTS, IMHO, had just the right amount. Seems we have fundamental disagreement on that one. The first 10 to 15 minutes of the film were one big joke in my eyes. Droid soldiers acting like they were reprogrammed by "No 5" (in this film they call him General Grievous) to act like the three stooges, lame "homage" to The Matrix with a "funny" version of the squiddies and every fighter of the droid army making dumb baby noises - sorry, just not my idea of "just the right amount".

droids... make... my... head... hurt... sooo... soooo... bad....

Oh well, probably they'll add fart jokes to ANH's Battle of Yavin in the 2007 editions to "lighten it up a bit".

"Awww Geez Porkins- WHAT did you have for lunch?!?!?!?"

Actually that's been suggested as well. I'm actually still catching up on some the b-grade comic book movies that have come out over the last couple of years. I still need to see Catwoman, Hulk.... there's still a few more I've missed. And don't get me wrong- I've been a long term comic geek but haven't *read* much of them over the last few years either. Dang real life!
