Don't forget that 'Casablanca' WAS already remade- into a film called 'Barb Wire'. That film was so bad and when it clicked in that they were following 'Casablanca' almost scene-per-scene I just about bust a gut laughing in the theater. And don't worry- I had free tickets or else I wouldn't have paid to see it.

No 'we're back on the new Earth and everyone is alive again and now we can be a happy couple together- the end' stuff. The point of the tale(s) in general are to point out the ridiculous and pointless nature of human existence in the most amusing and non sequitor way possible.

The film is essentially what Joss wanted to do with seasons 2 & 3, boiled down into a movie. So yes, watch the series first!

Well heck until I get a chance to refind that reference wee *can* just talk about the film/series!

Have you seen any of the Firefly tv series AWK? If not by all means rent the DVDs and watch them! Sci-Fi Network if showing re-runs but I think it really helps to be introduced to the series on DVD. Great cast, great scripts, plausible (for sci-fi) premises. Though 'Serenity' *can* and *does* stand alone as a film, if you see the series first there are so many more levels you can enjoy the film on.
Gaffer- did you see the 'easter egg' on the making of the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial? Joss- "Can you make it weirder? More surreal? Uh, how about a little stranger..?"

Yeah 'Curse of the Were-Rabbit' was absolutely one of my top five of the year! I just love Wallace and Grommit anyhow. My favorite line? (has to be heard instead of written though) "I'll tell you what it was... it was arson!" *gasp* "Arson?!?!?" "Yes- one of you has been arsin' about!" Ahahhahahaaaaaaaaa!
On the flip side I HATED 'Hitchhiker's Guide' with a passion. And no not because I didn't 'get it' but because I thought they raped the original works and spirit thereof and only sprinkled in random stuff to try and appease fans. I had to go listen to the original radio dramas twice and re-watch the BBC series on DVD just to get the taste out of my mouth. Typical happy Hollywood endings?!?! WTF was *that* all about???? *sigh*

I too had the mixed emotions experiences with the PT. Its funny I actually had lost faith in TPM just before if was released and hadn't bought tickets to the first show or anything but then kinda freaked at the last minute because I had see all of the OT on opening day, in the theater at the first showing (an evening show for SW, a matinee for ESB and ROTJ- no midnight shows in my neck of the woods in those days). I lucked out that the theater close to me had opened another midnight screen for TPM and I got same day tickets. I had a couple of brewskis, hung out with a friend and saw a Star Wars film by gum! And despite my opinions of it I *still* went to see opening night shows of all the others. Even coming out of the theater complaining its still worth the experience.
But to weave animation back into it, another of my favorite PT moments was watching the 'Clone Wars' episodes and realizing that there were still some creative people out there who cared about the universe in which they were creating stories.

*sigh*
I too am sick of hearing this recent Vietnam reference in regards to Star Wars. If there was any vague truth to that viewpoint at all it never, ever showed at the time the OT was being made or released. In fact truly the first I remember hearing any connection at all was Lucas 'defending' his politcal content in the PT (ie Nute Gunray, the 'This is how democracy dies' line, etc) and GL's defense was 'hey man I don't know nothing about no George Bush I'm a Vietnam baby, baby!'
And I kinda get the impression that GL, Spielberg, Coppola, et al weren't too concerned about anti-war rallies, etc when they were in film school- just making movies and trying to pass classes. That's not to say we all aren't products of our generation because of course we are- its just GL isn't an Oliver Stone (though his delusions seem to be rivaling Ollie's at times

X-File I used to LOVE in the first 3 or so seasons. Each episodes was a stand alone 'monster' show perfectly in the vein of the original 'Nightstalker' or similar shows. You didn't have to watch them in order, they were well written, etc. Then individual writers started peppering scripts with the 'alien conspiracy' crap. Each put his or her own spin on it and when Carter had to (or decided to) start pulling these threads together it just became a mess and I personally found it uninteresting and nigh unwatchable. Which then in turn made me less interested in re-watching the first few seasons- kinda ruining the show for me.
So basically I pray that, like it says in the opening of BSG, 'They Have A Plan'.

Film Threat a few years back (when it was still a on-paper magazine) published a cover story with the headline '50 Reason Why Return of the Jedi Sucks'. You can read the long article here: 50 Reason Why Return Of The Jedi Sucks
Some highlights:
5. [ Painful Lack of Innovation ]
When it comes to scavenging, Lucas could teach even the Jawas a thing or two. Jedi borrows from Wars on levels ranging from conceptual to minute. There's another opening scene with a Star Destroyer (though this time it isn't even permitted to finish its awesome crawl across the top of the screen). There's another Imperial stronghold to infiltrate, and another energy beam to turn off. And of course, there's another Death Star to blow up for the film's climax (though at least the Emperor had enough brains to plug up that pesky exhaust port).
Most of the creatures and droids seen on Tatooine in Wars make background appearances in Jabba's court-even Greedo's alive and well! (Okay, maybe it's a different Rodian. They all look the same to us.) Finally, little thought seems to have been given to developing or maturing any of the main characters in a realistic manner. Han and Threepio suffer most, coming across as catchphrase-spouting caricatures of their previous selves.
6. [ Witty banter ]
Note to writer Lawrence Kasdan: If you must fill your script with witty banter, at least try and make it, well, witty. With one or two exceptions, the humor in Wars and Empire was subtle, based around throwaway lines and the personality quirks of well-written characters. Jedi's overly contrived "humor" too often seems inspired by the setup-to-punchline wordplay found in a typical episode of Three's Company.
In what is probably the film's single most painful moment, Solo requests Threepio do a number of chores. After continually tapping him on the shoulder and preventing him from leaving to complete his duties, Solo quips, "Hurry up, will ya? I haven't got all day." Har-dee-har-har. Based on witticisms like that, it's amazing that Luke never rebuked the Emperor by stating, "Up your nose with a rubber hose."
16. [ Unforgivable Dialogue ]
Threepio approaching Jabba's palace: "I have a bad feeling about this."
Han Solo, when confronted by Ewoks: "I have a bad feeling about this."
Leia, after releasing Solo from carbon freeze: "I gotta get you outta here."
Leia, after being freed from Jabba's chains: "We gotta get outta here."
Leia, after she and an Ewok are ambushed on Endor: "Let's get outta here."
With dialogue like this, it seems Lucas finally put that "million monkeys at a million typewriters" theory to the test.
17. [ Horrible Exposition ]
"Artoo, look! It's Captain Solo-and he's still frozen in carbonite!" Lines like this are for those people who somehow missed the first two movies. Threepio is the main offender throughout, even going so far as to offer a long, Ewokese summary of the Trilogy's plot thus far (with sound effects, no less). Of course, Lucas would probably say that scene was to show "the entrancing magic of storytelling." Call us cynical, but entrancing magic makes us want to puke.
21. [ Terrible, Terrible Post-Production Looping ]
In about half of Jedi's scenes, little attempt is made to match the dialogue with the characters' lip movements-it's almost like watching a Mothra flick. If Lucas were smart, he'd blame this on the film's being dubbed from its original language. You know-the one they spoke a long time ago in that galaxy far, far away.

Etc, etc, etc...
Most of the points are valid. But if any media source would have had the sheer audacity to bring up such points in the early 80s we all probably would have been defending the films as much as AWK is with the prequels. These things come in cycles. But whenever any of us gets too involved in this banter we should stop, take a break, walk around outside a bit and breathe deep the air of real life.... and then come back in, log on and work on those fan edits.
