Superman Movie
Time
On a more positive note, from TheDigitalBits:

Yes... looks like it's true. We've known for a while now that Warner Home Video was working on new DVD special editions of the Superman films to tie in with the release of Bryan Singer's Superman Returns later this year (in theaters 6/30), but now we have the first actual confirmation... from Ilya Salkind, who co-produced the first three Superman films! Salkind has acknowledged that he's working with Warner on the new DVDs, and that all of the films in the series are being restored and given deluxe new special edition treatment, a-la last year's Batman Anthology collection. By far the best news in all this, is that it seems that Warner is FINALLY allowing Richard Donner to create his original director's cut of Superman II! How damn cool is that?! As many of you know, Donner directed Superman: The Movie and most of Superman II back to back, but was eventually fired from the sequel. Director Richard Lester was hired to replace him, and it's Lester's cut of the film that we've seen all these years. What's cool is that Lester's theatrical cut of the film is being given special edition treatment as well, so you'll be able to fully explore BOTH versions of Superman II on DVD this summer. Lester MAY even do an interview for the DVD - something he's been reluctant to do over the years given the controversy. This information comes from Salkind via The Superman Homepage fan site, which expects to publish a full interview with Salkind in the coming weeks. Very cool news indeed (though keep in mind that until Warner announces this set, it's all still unofficial). Thanks to Bits reader Matt K. for the heads-up on this.

I'm in a similar situation to you ricardo- the missus and I are polar opposites on media and hobby stuff but on the same track for all the stuff that counts.

I will say that being an only child and someone who treasures his 'me time' the impending addition to our coupledom scares the crap out of me in ways. Yeah yeah yeah I know its great and all (as I've heard 10 million times) but it'll take a lot of getting used to, especially for a set-in-his-ways 34 year old! At least I already *have* a lots of Disney and kids-oriented DVDs as I'm a kid at heart... then again they occupy the shelves right next to my zombie films, 'Pulp Fiction', etc etc etc... I can only hope that my child grows up as twisted as I am.

And DAYV- I'll try to get her to cross her legs an extra day or so so you and I can match up!

The blackness of it was so extreme that it was almost impossible
to tell how close you were standing to it.

I think what Jay is trying to say is that he originally envisioned having 9 children, but then decided to call it quits after three (two of which will turn out rather nicely but the youngest can be kind of goofy), then 5 years or so later he'll go back and decide to have three more but those will turn out to be right rat bastards. Then he'll decide that his first three kids all need extreme make-overs and that they never really existed prior to their plastic surgeries and he'll also deny that he ever wanted to have nine kids and blame us at the OT.Com for making up such a ridiculous story.

Wait, what were we talking about again?

Why don't you show your friend the Serenity episode instead of the movie (unless that's what you're talking about)? I am continually grateful for having seen the show before the movie as nothing was spoiled for me, and the pilot is done so well (and it's only about half an hour shorter than the movie) that that alone is what got me hooked.

I might. I thought about it but I'm really not sure if he'll ever sit down and watch the rest (a shame) and I'm actually kinda curious as to what someone who knows nothing of the series thinks of the film.

And I agree about Joss. I never cared for anything he did before. And I'll probably never really be into Buffy or Angel. I never heard of Firefly until a few months ago. But he does seem to be a champion of geeks. The Mick Jagger of geeks if you will. He genuinely seems to care about what he does and cares about the people who care about what he does. "I'm never interested in making things that people like... only what they love."

I think that's one thing that many creators will never understand- the cheapest film or the silliest TV concept can work IF the creators and stars *believe* in what they're doing and try to have a good time with it. The glory days of the film studios doing contract films but actually having talented people behind them are long dead. There's a few filmmakers who genuinely work their way up the chain and grow their craft but so many 'big' Hollywood flics are made by hired 'it-persons of the month' just to get the opening weekend receipts without any care for the people making them or starring in them. I'd rather pay good money to support the Joss Whedons or the Sam Raimis of the world than lay down anything for whatever music-video-director-du-jour was hired to remake some horror movie or helm the latest comic book movie.

But I digress...

I went through the special features again on my own, and I finally found the quote you're talking about, greencapt. It's in the "Future History: The Story of Earth That Was" documentary. It has Joss talking about how he read this book about the Civil War... "and it made me think of the Millenium Falcon... because a lot of things make me think of the Millenium Falcon." And then it cuts away to a shot on set while filming, and, for reasons I can't quite figure out, one of the crew shouts to an area offscreen and says, "You think we should send a picture of that to George Lucas?" and people laugh.

Damn- and I had hoped I was going crazy!

Glad you found it! Be interesting to know just what they were talking about though.

I think I'm going to try to show 'Serenity' to a non-Firefly, non-Serenity fan/newbie tonight. He should dig it I hope.

I actually used to agree with that battlewars. I *liked* the Buffy series but was far from ga-ga about it and would probably not buy the series on DVD. Angel, as a series, I could care less about. I thought 'Alien 4' was pure ass and that more than anything kept me from following anything Joss had done since.... until.... I actually had completely missed even hearing about 'Firefly' when it was on TV for its brief stint. But much like I did with the new BSG series on Sci-Fi, I gave the series a look on DVD... and got hooked! I actually think that Whedon's fans tend to over-rate him to the degree that George Lucas' fans do but the difference being Joss doesn't seem to buy into the hype. Maybe he's a great actor or something but I honestly believe him when he does interviews- believe that he's a geek like us and found a way (as many of us would like to) towork that geekness into a career doing the things we love.

Lucas on the other hand went all Howard Hughes on us and fully buys into, apparently, his own bullshit.

Gundark, head west on the TransCanada #1 past Swift Current till you get to Gull Lake, turn left onto Highway #37, and just keep driving south. It's about 100 km. It's actually only aobut 30 from the border with Montana. Sad I know that, isn't it?

I wouldn't go THAT far for a Climax. Easier to just Google it with one hand!

Actually pleasant doesn't really come across in that last long post. Actually very narcissistic sounding. Or written from the point of view of someone trying to come off in a manner that appeals to a very small segment of fandom... sort of a 'this is how women are in my mind'. Still an amusing and totally inane debate... carry on, lads!
