Info: Prequel Trilogy in HD on German TV!

Greencapt, when I used to subscribe to HBO-HD (about four years ago), almost none of their HD was OAR. So much so that I nicknamed it (in my Usenet posts on the topic) "IBC" -- you know, how the letters "HBO" would look with the left and right sides cut off.

I don't think anything has changed. Recent caps I've seen from HBO are still not typically OAR.

You do know that "OAR" stands for "Original Aspect Ratio," and that because many films -- including our favourite six (or three, depending) -- are wider than 16:9, that means there should be black bars top and bottom on an OAR broadcast, right? If there are no black bars on IBC's Ep II, then it's not OAR.

Cropping to 16:9 isn't quite as heinous as cropping to 4:3, but it still ain't right!!

Thanks for the info and yes I know what OAR means. What it *really* means is that the films that I would usually watch that were shot wider than 16:9 I probably already own on DVD and would watch them there, and the films that I've checked out on HBO HD were more recent stuff that at best *was* shot in 16:9. I actually hardly watch HBO (or any of the movie channels) at all and just have it free this year because of a promo package. And I honestly can say that of anything I've even watched in HD, movies have not impressed me. In fact as soon as the promo is up I'm dropping the HD and the movie package. I don't watch sports and the only HD that I've seen that impressed me was some of the Discovery Channel stuff... and one can only watch so many travelogues of Malaysia!

HBO is notorious for non-OAR presentations, although it appears that the studios provide them the films that way. All the presentations of AOTC I've seen on HBO have been 1.78:1, not 2.35:1. Showtime, however, is consistently OAR.

But in HD? I know every other film that HBO ever shows on all 50 (or however many) channels they have are shown pan and scan but the single HBO HD channel has shown every film I've watched on it in OAR. Can anyone confirm either way?

Ep 2 has been shown in HD before; I have it. However, it was on HBO, which means it wasn't OAR. If this is on Pro7 or Premiere (same thing?), then the chances are good it'll be OAR. I think.

I'm not picking, just asking- are you sure it was non-OAR? The reason I ask is that every HD movie I've watched on HBO over the last year *has* been OAR and I'm trying to imagine the circumstances that would stop them from HD mastering or playing EP 2 differently.

Yeah it does- its like seeing still images from a good animated film or something. Why doesn't Didio like his style?

Finally got a chance to watch this last ep and I have to agree that it was a great episode. If I had any gripes they would be...

1) The resurrection 'chamber'. I was expecting to see banks and banks of bio pods (ala The Matrix) but *one* bathtub? Do they *only* come back to life one at a time? Yes I realize that they were on Caprica and it was probably a portable unit or something set up quickly and it wasn't exactly like the Cylon homeworld and/or the ship that we saw. Also why have the folks stand around when they're being reborn? Do they *know* beforehand who will be reborn and where? Inquiring minds want to know!

2) Almost *too* much good stuff going on! What I mean is that I would have liked to have had more of this episode and focus on these events than the events of the past couple filler episodes. This one set the stage for some stuff to come. And I don't know about Sharon but I smell a major meltdown coming when Helo eventually finds out about the kid!

Speaking of the kid I predict that as she grows she'll be taken aboard a basestar by Diana and eventually end up merging her mind with the ship and saving the day! Oh wait- wrong series!

Uh... Spidey Spidey Spidey Spidey Spidey.

OK, now then... lol.

In issue #1 of the Hulk the *was* gray, then changed to green until the mid to late 80s when they brought back the gray hulk for a change of pace and new story direction. But like costumes, people always want it back to green basics.

You're weirding me out, dude.

I *think* it means.... well... errr... uh, like in the USA we are willing to wait for our ice cream because we are either A) more selective or care more about what flavor we end up with or B) we are capitalist imperialist swine who want all the ice cream in the world. Or something.

And I think in the pic I posted the two upper right hand flavors are light and dark boobie flavor.

I wonder how much of that was planned out. from what it said on Spiderfan.com it seemed like they were trying to have him use the black one. Im sure sometimes they try to change the costume and just end up going back to the original because the character is so iconic.

Oh yeah- I was buying those issues at the time and they certainly *wanted* to keep using the black outfit but sales dropped after a short while and fans started writing in to change it back. (Them was da days when we didn't have no internet to bitch about stuff on!)

Slightly off topic but didnt Iron Man have a black/white/grey costume at one point or was that some other guy in the Iron Man world (im getting this from the spidey cartoon, when the had carnage)

Yup. Well sorta. Throughout the comic Tony Stark built several versions of the Iron Man armor- some just upgrades and some specialized (stealth, underwater, etc). Due to his alcoholism Tony Stark gave up being Iron Man for awhile and his friend Jim Rhodes took up the armor. When Tony came back to the land of the living, and around the time of using the black/gray/white armor, Jim set off to fight crime as 'War Machine' which allowed Stark to get back to the more classic styled armor.

Then again there was *also* the original Iron Man armour that was, like the original Hulk, all gray and bulky!

I think they wouldn't have kept using it. Like Superman, Spidey is an iconic character and the suit is a major part of that. The comics publishers often will use new suits for stunts but the fans always seem to go back to wanting the 'classic' look. Now in books like the X-Men, characters change costume every other issue or so so it just becomes part of the evolution of the series... but for the big solo characters? Nah.

Even worse than that I wonder which came first, the cough or the cartoon. I've heard that the Clone Wars producers put it in to explain the cough, just as they put in Anakin's knighting ceremony, etc. But I haven't heard a clear timeline as to whether or not Lucas told them "this is how he got his cough" or if, when presented with the script of ROTS to 'animate the crawl' as they've said, the animators just thought 'this is stupid but let's try to explain it like we've had to do with everything else.

Part of me wishes I'd have never seen Clone Wars prior to seeing ROTS so that my mind would have been even freer to love or hate the film based on its own merits. (Not that my opinion of it could have been much lower)

You know, I genuinely enjoy eating Spam!

Since I was a kid I always got a can of Spam in both my Easter basket and my Christmas stocking. I was thrilled to go to Hawaii and try many different Spam recipes (as well as seeing it sold in McDonalds!) and even bought both volumes of the Hawaiian Spam Cookbooks!

great stuff.

Thanks for the info, ricardo! But it begs the question... why don't they just call it "Silky-Smooth, Hazelnut-Flavored Chocolate That Comes in Several Styles Including Milk Chocolate and Bittersweet Chocolate" flavor?!?!? That would be SO much easier!

... its as if those Swisss have a different word for EVERYTHING!
