4K restoration on Star Wars

Maybe George doesn't even care anymore. ;P

I read something a while ago, I don't remember where or who wrote it, but Lucas considered walking away from the deal because Disney wouldn't pay unless the got everything from Lucas, and Lucas eventually agreed because he didn't want to hoard anything anymore or something along those lines. So it is possible (maybe even probable) that Lucas selling Star Wars was his way of letting go of all the emotional trauma that Star Wars apparently inflicted on him, and letting some one else do with it whatever they please.

Something I was thinking about is how Kathleen Kennedy is now president of the Lucasfilm branch of Disney now that Lucas is out of the picture. Kennedy seems like someone who would have respect for film preservation since she's been in the business for decades, but at the same time she has a history with George since she worked with him on Indiana Jones. Does anyone think she would want to preserve George's "true vision" of the trilogy (possibly at his request), or would she just not care anymore?

has anyone seen this before? It mentions in the article something about how Lucas had a contract with Fox that included a stipulation that original prints of the unaltered versions were to be destroyed. Is this article real, or is it exaggerating or joking? I honestly am never sure what to believe anymore when it comes to George Lucas, but if Disney now owns Lucasfilm then Fox and Disney wouldn't do any of that anymore right? Also, this piece written on savestarwars.com talked about how Lucas refused to send the Library of Congress any prints but the SE's for SW and ESB, but now that Disney owns Lucasfilm would they have sent in prints for preservation at the Library of Congress, or does it still belong to Lucasfilm? I'd imagine Disney would send the original unaltered films in for preservation at the LOC because they aren't insane people who hate film as an art form, but I don't know. It's all very confusing

Something I think a lot of people are overlooking is that by the time we get to Christmas 2014 there is probably going to be an absolute blitz of Star Wars stuff. Remember back in the 90's before Phantom Menace when all that Star Wars crap was in stores? I think something similar is going to happen before Episode VII and I bet there'll be a re-release of the OT as well (just like in '97) except this time, instead of the gimmick being, "a few new surprises" the gimmick will be, "see it as it was seen back in 1977," or something. Maybe i'm just getting my hopes up to high, but remember, we aren't dealing with George Lucas here, Disney is run by sane businessmen who aren't out to prove some point about their "original visions," so I really think there's a chance

I also went back to page 2 of this thread and looked at the lightsaber flash comparisons and you can tell that (other than color) the flashes are identical to the blu ray and not the GOUT. The only possibility is that they color corrected the blu ray and edited out SE changes and re-added the real scenes, which honestly, I could live with, if they do it right

No, this was 100% 2011 Blu-ray and now completely unrelated to the 4K RMW scan this thread is about. It was identical to the '11 in changes/effects, and I believe as well as in coloration and cropping, though I'm no expert. I don't think the Plaza thing is worth discussing any further as it's only going to distract from the real conversation of what we think the RMW website listing means for the future of the trilogy: which negatives did they scan, and who's doing what, if anything, with said scan?

That's good to know. I bet they scanned the 1997 SE because unfortunately that is what the "official" negative of the film is. I don't think anyone would go through the effort of adding future SE changes from 04 and 11 because the changes are so minute and pointless and would be a waste of time. That being said, I also don't think they would re-release the 97 version because the added CGI looks so dated and there would be no market for it really at all, no one wants an earlier version of the SE, people just want the OOT. So I really do think the new scan was made in order to restore the unaltered film, maybe i'm just getting my hopes up too high but it's really all that seems to make sense

I don't think they would go through the work of making a new scan just to recreate the blu ray SE; bad colors, rock in front of R2D2 and all. I really do think that they made the scan for an OOT, maybe i'm just being overly hopeful but I just highly doubt they'd make a new scan to remaster the SE only 3 years after it was released on blu ray

I really don't see them doing the '97 SE and not the oot though.

I agree 100%. I highly doubt that Disney would revert back to the '97 SE. It is possible that they made a scan of the '97 edition and are going to do an OT restoration from there by re-adding the real scenes and removing the crap Lucas added in '97. This would be awesome especially if they planned on making the unaltered version the official negative for the film again.
