Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

Yes, Carrie Fisher confirmed to a rapt audience at the BMO Centre Saturday afternoon that she will in fact be reprising her most famous role of Princess Leia in a new series of Star Wars films, which will be produced by Disney. She was the first of the original cast members to announce her participation back in March, although apparently jumped the gun. Her publicist later said she was joking and that nothing had been confirmed.

However, it seems to be a done deal now. But for fans looking for a sneak-peek of what to expect in the new film, Fisher didn’t offer many juicy details.

“I like being bought by Disney, because they never wanted to buy me before,” she said during a talk at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo. “I’m glad they are doing a new movie because they are sending a trainer to my house so I can get in really good shape. So I’m really eating a lot of sugar in advance, as you can see. By the time I really get down to it I will have eaten everything.”

The best aspects of Jedi are on par with the best parts in the other films.

Absolutely. Mark Hamil's performance is his best in the series and the stuff between Luke, Vader and the emperor is great.

Not only that, I just never had a problem with Ewoks. Their presence might seem silly, and I can concede that the battle with the stormtroopers is a bit uneven in allowing the imperial forces to be so easily overtaken by Ewoks hitting their helmets with sticks. But, it simply doesn't detract from the movie for me.

What has Lando got to be forgiven for again?

He borrowed Han's clothes and probably didn't wash them. ;)

As Leia is wearing her old outfit at the end of Empire, I sure hope it's been washed since that little side trip to the trash compactor! ;)

I was joking. I know he didn't actually take Han's clothes - they're standard fare for Corellians.

I think every time I try to make a joke results in being corrected with a literal response.

I'm not sure. From the IMDb poster's comments I think it's unclear whether Khan is killed or not (or he just didn't mention it).

The spoilers confirm what I've anticipated - long-running ST fans are probably going to hate this movie even more than ST09.

Abrams' ST movies are more about introducing new generations of fans to ST (or at least a version of ST) rather than "continuing" the saga's lore/mythology. This is perfectly fine, but I can foresee a huge throng of ST fans experiencing the same concerns from ST09 but to a greater degree.

Abrams' writing trio of Kurtzman/Orci/Lindelof has basically taken the TOS episode "Space Seed" plus TWOK and reworked them into a new version of the story. While I expect to enjoy the movie I think it just shows another example of how much those three writers blow, especially Lindelof. It's one thing to use source material to come up with a new story, it's another to borrow heavily and not actually develop a new or interesting story. Switching Kirk and Spock from TWOK's shocker doesn't really strike me as a bold creative choice - it's rather a very easy one. "How can we do Khan but have a different ending? Oh, let's have Kirk die instead."

I like ST but didn't watch any series loyally as I grew up. So I'm not 'offended' or put off by any liberties Abrams and co. have taken with the story since, again, it's a modernized interpretation intended to primarily appeal to new fans.

When the subject of being loyal to both Star Wars and Star Trek was brought up, Abrams told the events that lead to initially turning down the job.

"The worlds are vastly different. Honestly, that was why I passed on Star Wars to begin with. I couldn’t imagine doing both. But when I said that my loyalty was to Star Trek I was literally working on finishing this cut. I couldn’t even entertain another thought. It was like being on the most beautiful beach in the world and someone saying, “There’s this amazing mountain over here. Come take a look.” I couldn’t balance the two, so I passed on Star Wars."

That didn't sway Kathleen Kennedy though as she persisted in trying to get Abrams as he recalls.

"I was near the light at the end of the tunnel with my work on Star Trek. I felt I needed a bit of a breather, actually. But then Kathleen Kennedy [the new Lucasfilm head who oversees Star Wars] called again. I’ve known her for years. We had a great conversation, and the idea of working with her on this suddenly went from being theoretical and easy to deny to being a real, tangible, thrilling possibility. In the end it was my wife, Katie, who said if it was something that really interested me, I had to consider it."

Though many have said that Abrams turned Star Trek into Star Wars, he maintains that the films will still be visually different.

"As with anything, because these are very different worlds, they shouldn’t feel the same aesthetically. They can’t. You’re right. But again, I don’t apply aesthetics first and fit a movie into that aesthetic. If I had come into Star Trek with those eyes, I would probably have been paralyzed. The advantage here is that we still have George Lucas with us to go to and ask questions and get his feedback on things, which I certainly will do. With Star Trek it was harder because I wasn’t a Star Trek fan; I didn’t have the same emotional feeling, and I didn’t have Gene Roddenberry to go to. But I came to understand the world of Star Trek, and I appreciated what fans felt and believed about this universe and this franchise."

You missed a pretty big one

Even though it's a spoiler thread, I'll give people a chance to avoid this.

MAJOR SPOILER

Pike dies (probably was expected).

But more importantly.............Kirk dies. The climax of the film essentially flips his and Spock's places from TWOK. Kirk dies from radiation. Earlier in the film we learn that Khan's blood can heal. If you saw the IMAX prologue that's how Khan heals that guy's daughter (then recruits him to do something). Bones discovers Khan's blood heals by injecting it into a dead Tribble and seeing it come back alive. So at the end of the film Spock is chasing down Khan in order to get his blood and save Kirk. They succeed.
