Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**
Time

Lindelof won't be a part of the new trilogy, so that automatically gives me hope. If this Arndt fellow can whip up a good script JJ will do a great job. But if the script sucks, the movie will suck.

They don't want to heavily depend on any preexisting EU stories, so the challenge is then coming up with a fresh take on where the OT characters would be 30 years later. My main concern is that it will end up feeling like a knockoff of better EU stories that cover similar ground.

Is the SW Universe an Idiocracy?
Time

Hey, it's me. said:

It gets to me when I hear 'Palpatine cleverly manipulated the Senate and fooled the Jedi'. No he didnt. Anyone with half a brain cell can see that. This civilisation is so clever they've mastered space travel, built fantastic planet sized cities, numerous species harmoniously interact with one another. But noone amongst them was savvy enough to studiously watch the increasingly and openly suspicious Palpatine? Corruption is rife amongst the Senate. Is it really? And how do you know this? Why are you not reporting who is corrupt and allowing the Jedi to investigate and deal with these corrupt senators? You obviously seem to know a lot, so come on, give us the full SP.

I agree with this. That Palpatine was able to deceive so many people is a huge stretch. People sometimes refer to the shroud of the dark side of the force clouding people's judgment, but to me that's just a lazy explanation (or lack of explanation) for the sheer stupidity of all the people in Coruscant, the Senate, the Jedi Order, etc.

I grew up thinking the Jedi Order was this group of badasses who were in touch with common people and protected them from oppression. They could have been like magistrate judges. In reality they were a bunch of boring, narcissistic fools who just sat around doing nothing but waiting 10+ years for answers to magically come to them. A bunch of lazy, uninspired dolts who thought doing nothing was the best approach.

Then again, all this bears striking similarity to how we deal with political and social issues in our culture and world. Maybe Lucas really is a genius and we just haven't seen it. ;)

The announcement of J.J. Abrams being brought on to helm Star Wars: Episode VII has been a very controversial decision. His previous involvement in Star Trek has caused many to begrudge his hiring on Star Wars, but as he puts it himself, the job is "one of those once in a lifetime opportunities."

Abrams spoke with the BBC about the approach he his bringing to the film and hopefully it will persuade the naysayers.

"It's just about about approaching it from as authentic a place as possible, and not trying to apply what you believe or think, as much as trying to filter everything and get at it from the core of the characters. [It should be] what you deeply want to see, never what you assume the fans might like."

Many have been concerned that Abrams' work on both Star Trek and Star Wars will cause the two sci-fi titans to feel the same, but he doesn't feel that way.

"To me they are such wildly disparate universes - the back story, the tone, the mood, certainly the history [and] the characters - that I'm in no way worried."

There were a number of questions for J.J. Abrams about Star Wars but he pushed those away by saying it was too early for decisions, however he did say that he expects John Williams to return and compose the score for Episode VII (something long-time Arams collaborator Michael Giacchino has said he supported).
