They did this to make our lives miserable. This is what I have been saying about LFL for a time now; the manipulate our nostalgia for these films to sodomize us over and over again because we are the addicts and they are the dealers. There is an infinite demand and and an infinite supply: the suppliers can do whatever the hell they want with the fans because they cannot let go of SW. No one can. They always sink lower and lower and it will never stop.

I think some of us need to calm down a little...... "they did this to make our lives miserable" - Ridiculous comment!

No matter how much we want the originals, they ARE just films. Take a look on the front page of any news channel to see what really IS important, and the true suffering many people are going through......

Just films? Tell LFL that; they believe that the PT is the greatest work of art since the Illiad, and every film in the franchise is designed to be a drug and not a film. I hate to admit it, but even ANH and ESB were products to control you on a subconscious level and make money for LFL.

The shoddy treatment of these films is one of the reasons the world is so miserable today. Granted, it is a small part of that misery, but is part of the great skyscraper of misery that is the modern age. Look at how low Hollywood has gone today: they are making movies out of board games, for fuck's sake. They are making movies on par with an Ed Wood movie every week now. They have not made even a halfway decent film in 10 years. It is so bad I can't even remember the last time I went to a movie theater because there is so much shit in our multiplexes. All they care about is the opening weekend profits, so they make a movie not on any original idea anymore but just a remake of a remake so that it will have familiarity with the audience. It's no wonder that American film is dead and there is absolutely no hope of it ever recovering in our lifetimes. You no longer have an outlet of escape like you did in the 30s and 40s, during the Golden age of Hollywood; nor do you have a generation of great filmmakers like in the New Hollywood era to see a work of art. That is why part of the world is so miserable today.

They put all the fucking garbage on a ninth disc and they can't even bother to restore 10 minutes worth of footage to give us the MOTHERFUCKING OOT in a watchable format!?! Lucas is worse than Uwe Boll, Michael Bay, and M. Night Shayamalan combined. At least they don't change their movies every five minutes and withhold the original versions from the public, and send you to prison for watching these movies (due to copyright/piracy laws). I think Lucas even burns every frame of the negative of the OOT with a match just to pass the time.

So TPM got mixed reviews when it came out. And so did AOTC and ROTS as well. But 6-12 years later, the stature of the PT has gone down considerably as some of the most disappointing films ever made. You could feel it in the theater when they first came out that they were subpar. The hype is gone for these films, and they are still not on par with the OT as PT apologists claim them to be. Watching them today, many people cringe at the dated CGI, the wooden acting, the illogical plot, and are bored by the action scenes in the film. If you really watch the films with a critical eye, the whole PT is DOA with the opening crawl of TPM. I might go so far as to say the PT is too highly rated based on the numbers at IMDB and RT.

If you want to really go back, ROTJ "crashed" the whole franchise, so they were doomed 15 years before they were even made (don't get me wrong- I love ROTJ, but nostalgia is what makes it good). ROTJ was a template for the PT, but magnified the little flaws into the major flaws that became the unintentional foreground of the later films.

They still would not have existed had it not been for the fans of the OT. And the PT made so much money solely because of the nostalgia for the OT, fueled by cognitive dissonance. TPM set the precedent in blockbusters that you can make a profit despite a film's awfulness. When TPM3D comes out, there will be no doubt be a "critical rehabilitation" of the film, and people will go see it, thinking it is not as bad as they thought it was. TPM3D will sadly also usher in the death knell of traditional 2D films, just because of how much money it will make.

On another note, LFL is just a big drug cartel now (not literally!), they will make us see a bad movie wether we like it or not.

What is this, Clockwork Orange?

Maybe. But the truth of the matter is, LFL manipulates our nostalgia for these films to make us waste our time with utter shit. I know that is basically what all ad men basically do psychologically, but the quality of the PT and with them showing up in 3D next year, you know they are going to make a lot of money based on momentum. People still have warm, fuzzy memories about the OT, and anything associated with that nostalgia is going to be a hit.

It seems to me that GL was upset that he could not become a racer due to a near-death accident (why would he devote so much time in TPM to podracing?!). So I guess he made the whole SW franchise as a 40-year exercise in creating something we would unconditionally love, and then destroy it all in substance over this time as some sort of psychological transference in being denied his "true" vocation in life.

But it still is years later than when they should have been released. In an ideal world, they should have been in our hands 10 years ago to modern video standards, not a bonus feature that is still stuck in the early 90s.

If they convert the films to 3D, they can release each film separately as some BD/3D/DVD/digital copy combo (think Disney), and then rerelease the GOUT on the reissue, and then by the third reissue they can finally have the OOT on BD, but it will be the GOUT up-converted to HD. They'll just release the same 6 movies every year, but conveniently miss the real anniversaries like they did in 2007. Fans expected a 30th anniversary release, but it never showed up because they decided to milk the dvd release of the OT. Bottom line, we will have to wait 20 years for the OOT that should have been in good quality 10 years ago. LFL is only in the business of milking SW beyond the point of business sense because the public is addicted to the OT.

Well, based on what we have heard from LFL, they will just reuse the master they used for the 04 dvds and upscale it to 1080p. It is not going to transferred from actual film elements like most BDs, just reused masters. The same thing happened with the GOUT- they reused the 93 master. So why bother releasing this if it is going to be a half-assed job? But of course it is SW, its going to make millions in its first day, so of course it will be released. But based on discussion on this thread, its going to be a horrible product.

But that's people who pretend to be Jedis; not people who unconditionally accept the PT as the greatest films that rival the Godfather or Citizen Kane.

Anyways, what's the point anymore? We shouldn't be forced to make bootlegs of movies that should be readily available and not tacked on as some "bonus feature" like the GOUT. That is one of the biggest indignities for the OT right there. Think of all the time we are wasting doing the job LFL won't make in restoring these movies.

The consensus on the BDs when they come out in September is that they will be messed up in some degree and really cater to no one. It might as well not exist.

It doesn't matter. 20 years from now will still be waiting for the OOT, and the SW franchise will be ten times shittier than it already is. I hate to repeat the same shit, but if it hits the nail right on the head it hits the head. The DVD format is fading away without a decent transfer of the OOT, which would have been unthinkable 15 years ago. BD will have the same fate, all because Lucas doesn't realize he is the worst thing to happen to SW. The real people who made the OT great were Gary Kurtz, Lawrence Kasdan, Marcia Lucas, Leigh Brackett, Irvin Kershner, and Harrsion Ford. Lucas and his army of loyal jihadists are the only people who don't realize this.

TFN used to be an okay place. It had its ups and downs and there were a lot of controversies and rivalries and its always been insanely over-modded to the point of censorship, but you didn't have to look far to find interesting discussion, and there were lots of cool people there, even if you didn't agree with their views. Increasingly, its become a colony of creepy Lucas and Prequel Apologists who can't accept anything contrary to their own perfect little bubble, and the discussion is just awful. A lot of the more intelligent posters slowly drifted elsewhere because of all the weird zealots there. I'm sure you can still find some generally intelligent topics there, but sifting through the all the crap its buried in....it's just a different place than it used to be. It's weird and unpleasant to be there now, and this is from someone whose username bears a 1999 registry and has racked up thousands of posts there. The official forums were sort of like this, and its the reason I never made a single post there, and now I feel like in the last year or two TFN has become like this. Its sad, because I miss good SW discussion and liked that TFN had so many members, there used to always be a couple good threads active in every board.

Does anyone know what happened there? I know the Bashers Sanctuary closed down in 2006 or so, but a lot of its members still posted there for years. I remember there used to be a lot of people who knew a lot of interesting things about the series and had very intelligent opinions, not necessarily "bashers" or "gushers" but just regular, intelligent Star Wars fans. I don't know where these people went, but I've barely posted there for like two years and whenever I go back I realize why this is. I feel like it never used to be this extreme.

I hope that doesn't happen here on OT.com. Otherwise the cause for preserving the OOT is doomed. I heard you get banned from TFN if you don't like the PTSE.

Wow. He has really perverted intellectual property to destroy film. I want the OOT NOW and not 50 years from now when it enters public domain. I think many people think the same way I do in that the OOT deserves better than this, and I am fucking angry that GL is twisting the first amendment to destroy a film that should be seen by the public and not a bonus feature. This is why I feel so pissed. The OOT is rotting frame by frame and we cannot stop the destruction.

I agree; hits the nail right on the head zombie.

I also agree with nerfherder on GL: his real flaws were more and more prominent as time went on. The thing I most hate about him is his stubbornness in refusing to release the OOT (no the GOUT really doesn't count) on modern video format. The entire DVD format lived and died without the actual OT gracing it, and it looks like Blu-ray will see the same fate in regard to SW. The OOT as we know it should have been there, but it never really materialized except in a shoddy laserdisc port.
