How would a Star Wars reboot do?
Time

A reboot of the OT would be more like the films GL envisioned before more intelligent people took over and made them the classics they are. Instead of allowing the OOT to be left alone it would give an even bigger excuse for destroying them right under our noses. It probably would not have made any money anyway, but a $600 million loss to Lucas is probably a drop in the bucket for him, and hell, he probably have the studio take the loss for him. He can throw millions of people into suicidal depression due to these reboots simply because he has enough money to gain immunity from the consequences of his actions.

Is "Empire Strikes Back" really George Lucas' least favorite?

Try watching American Graffiti or THX 1138 again; neither has aged well at all.

I thought THX-1138 was pretty well done. Except for the masturbation scene - which IMO doesn't make sense within the context of the film's universe - its a very solid film with solid performances.

Which version was that? Like the OT, there have been several special editions of THX1138.

Anyways, the paradoxical relationship between GL's involvement and the quality of the film just proves that he is one of the greatest frauds of all time. He just managed to keep the deception going for 15-20 years. Try watching American Graffiti or THX 1138 again; neither has aged well at all. SW as we know it is a masterpiece in spite of Lucas because of the editing his ex-wife and three others have done to make it great. If GL had his way with those first two films he would have been rendered a footnote by now.

Cracked.com just doesn't get it...

The thing is, we had no say in the matter when Lucas chose to replace the OOT with the SE, and how he essentially told us we cannot watch the films anymore they way we preferred. The problem, obviously, is that other director's cuts for other movies don't function this way, as you can still see the theatrical cut if you want. Here it is de facto illegal to watch the OOT, and Cracked is siding with the SE.

And don't forget the self-indulgent cameos in every movie- hell, even shyamalan himself told the main character in Signs how to defeat the aliens!

Why is this a problem? And why would it "ruin" his movies? Alfred Hitchcock gave himself cameos in most (or all?) of his movies. Does anyone think that that "ruined" them? Peter Jackson gave himself cameos in all three LOTR films. Does that detract from your enjoyment of them?

Seriously, dude, sometimes it seems like you're just looking for things to gripe about...

The thing with Hitchcock cameos is that they were short and unobtrusive- usually it was just Hitch walking across the street in the background. He didn't become a main character in his stories, as M Night did in Signs or Lady In The Water, for self-indulgent reasons. Peter Jackson's cameos in LOTR was the same as Hitchcock, they were more like Easter eggs than a full walk-on role. I have no problems with background cameos like that.

Having Shyalaman tell Gibson's character an implied weakness for the aliens (and the fact that his character in the movie accidentally ran over Gibson's wife in the movie) seems a little narcissistic to me, as if the director entered the movie himself and told the characters what to do. That kind of ruins suspension of disbelief for me IMO.

Aliens turn out to be allergic to water in Signs. Frink may not call that a plot twist, but it is still a stupid ending. Same with the Villiage, I haven't seen that film because I learned about the plot twist in that movie, where it turns out to be the present day, but they pretend to be in the 19th century for some asinine reason. And don't forget the self-indulgent cameos in every movie- hell, even shyamalan himself told the main character in Signs how to defeat the aliens!

If I know that the same man who made the Villiage made this movie, am I really going to enjoy it knowing he never made anything better than this movie, and that it may not be as good as it was considered back in 1999? I'm sure some people wouldn't be bothered by this, but unfortunately I would.

Look at The Matrix, for example. You might enjoy it in spite of the two sequels that followed, or you might think there is no merit in watching it because what followed in the story taints what came before. Now I have actually seen The Matrix after Reloaded/Revolutions came out, and I guess I enjoyed it, but I don't view it as people viewed it back in '99 as a revolution in cinema (like The Sixth Sense). I see it as the one accidental masterpiece from a certified hack.

In other words, the later reputation of the director seeps in to the original great work.

Just ignore him.

Going back on topic, even though M. Night Shyalaman never made a franchise, I  think The Happening and The Last Airbender has ruined the Sixth Sense for me, even though the only Shyalaman film I have ever seen was Signs, and that had a very well known and very reviled plot twist. He went from "the next Hitchcock" to "the next Ed Wood" in less than a decade. Even his alma mater NYU is embarrassed of him.

The Simpsons is essentially a zombie show now; It will be making new episodes long after Groening and the six main voice actors are dead.

Metroid: Other M. Didn't Yoshio Sakamoto realize how out of character Samus was in that game? She became the Bella Swan of space operas overnight. (I wonder if Dave Sim was involved in this one...)

This one may be controversial: Ronald Moore and the BSG finale. The whole series was actually our past, and they just destroy all their futuristic technology and live like cavemen, and that Hera was the mitochondrial eve of humanity. Well, what do you expect from a guy that practically made nearly everyone a cylon in the end?

If the thread is locked, why do we see other users on this thread? (wink)

Anyways, I started this thread to really talk about Dave Sim. Towards the end of his run on Cerebus, he devoted eleven issues to an exegesis on the book of Genesis that justified his own sexist views and to his own version of the Big Bang. It was printed in very small text and nearly impossible to read. I spent days looking this up on google, and almost everyone seems to hate this storyline. It was so bad, that it probably ruined the other 289 issues of Cerebus as well.

Then there's Tim Burton. Anyone seeing Dark Shadows in the next couple weeks? (sarcasm intended)

Well, you certainly don't have the right to talk about SW in this thread, given how locked it is.

All right then, I'll avoid SW in this thread. I started this topic about other people who ruined their work.
