I think you should include a second or two of fake Kanan approaching from behind without the dialogue and running in front of Ezra. That way, from Ezra’s perspective (and first time viewer) it would not be obvious that we are dealing with a force illusion.

I’ll keep playing with it and see what works best.

I don’t mind Kanan starting in front as it is an illusion. I’m also not too worried about it being obviously a force vision as the original material went this route with all the heightened expressions. The purpose of the recolor is to achieve this without the goofiness hahaha.

But on the other hand him coming from behind was clever and gives a good justification for why Ezra is unsure of what he’s seeing. If I go down this route, we end up at the 3 section chamber which kinda kills the cavey vibe of the sequence but it does make more sense.

I think your suggestion might be the best fit. I’ll try minimise the length of Kanan coming from behind and remove the dialogue then make up my mind! 😃

Thanks for the suggestion and input!

Feedback Request:
I’ve spent a lot of time reworking and rethinking the Lothal Temple scenes. Below is the link to the sequence where Ezra encounters Kanan and the Inquisitor.

https://youtu.be/RvmWGczDVpk

I’ve recolored the scene to try invoke the Empire Strikes Back Cave sequence. Once lightsabers and fighting are brought in, I’ve used their red and blue colors to introduce some purple as well. I feel like this brings in a more vision/dream like atmosphere to the scene.

Because of the drastic recolor, I’ve also redone the VFX on the lightsabers to bring them back to the Rebels aesthetic as best as I can. I’d love to get feedback!

Changes So Far:

  • Fixed Audio Sync Issues
  • Recolored Cave Scene to resemble the ESB cave scene more closely
  • Cut dialogue with Ezra and “Kanan” before the “Inquisitor” encounter
  • Modified Kanan’s initial audio to make the sequence feel more “dreamy”
  • Redid all lightsabers to make them look correct after recoloring
  • Cut the goofy faces the Inquisitor and Kanan make at each other during their “fight”
  • Trimmed saber blows to make choreography flow better with new cuts
  • Added a framerate drop to mirror ESB cave scene

Something a bit more short and sweat like this example for episode one seems more fitting…

"In a galaxy dominated by a tyranical Empires rule for 14 years, the Galactic Empires relentless expansion continues, subjecting countless systems to their oppressive rule.

On the distant planet of Lothal, young Ezra Bridger, orphaned after his parents were seized by the Empire struggles to survive through theft and scavenging.

As the weight of Imperial control bears down on him, Ezra yearns for liberation."

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ll keep it under consideration when I go back an adjust the audio 😃

There are synchronization issues in S4E05 Family Reunion as well.

Quite noticeable around the 0:34 mark.

around 200 ms audio delay

I’ve set all episodes for season 1 (1080p V4 - HDR versions) which I’ve seen so far to -150 ms audio delay which shows better results. Like what I’ve seen so far g00b but crawls definitely need tweaking, I’ll also play around with Chat gpt and see what I can come up and let you know.

Thanks for that Darth Muffy! I’ll be fixing the audio as I go through.

I’m currently working on modifying the lothal temple scenes and further work in S01E05. I’ll have some more to share soon! 😃

As for the second half of the fifth episode (Princess on Lothal), I felt like it cut WAY too much and made things move WAY too fast. IMO Leia’s little introduction aboard the ship (0:46-2:00 of the original episode) was much needed, otherwise we just have a legacy character randomly popping out at the scenery; also, it’s important in-universe 'cause it shows the Empire is very tired of Alderaan meddling in their affairs, which makes them going after it on EP IV a little more believable. Also Kanan and Ezra talking to Leia before facing off against the stormtroopers (6:05-6:50 of the original) was also quite important, not only to keep the pace a little slower but to give some more background as to how Alderaan and the Senate can keep supporting anti-Empire stuff. And for last, the cut pep talk between Leia and Ezra (10:54-12:19 of the original) was a pretty sweet moment of character development for both of them, I don’t see why leaving it out.

Honestly my original intention would have been to cut this episode entirely. That’s probably why the episode moves pretty fast, hahaha. I’ll rewatch the original episode and keep an eye out for what you’ve mentioned and may include those scenes back in for V4. Thanks for the feedback Psy! 😄

Hi G00b,

Based on the episode quality I would have removed it as well. However, it’s quite important imo to show some important cameos in this series -especially Leia given her role in the original trilogy- Your whole series gets stronger by adding this kind of episodes as connective tissue. Because of that, keeping all interactions between Leia and the Ghost’s crew seems crucial to me.

I agree, as I’m working through that episode I will be trying to restore more of the Leia scenes back into it! 😄

I’d try to generally aim for fewer, longer sentences instead of a of shorter ones.

I’ll keep that in mind for the crawls as I’m putting them together with the AI. The shortest sentence for episode 1 is It is a time of oppression. Which I quite like hahaha.

Not sure how I feel about the capitalization. I know Eddie did that, but only for the first time a new place or major character is introduced.

Honestly, I wasn’t too fond of it either… but the original crawls use it so if I’m going for immersion I think it’s needed.

I don’t want to copy Eddies formatting… so maybe I’ll limit myself to one capitalisation per screen of text limited to important people/faction/location.

For example:

On another note, I love your custom helmet intro.

Thanks! It took a bit of blender work!

Not sure how the quality of v4 compares to v3, since I have no comparison at hand.

That’s alright! 😃

Most of the time the issues are repeated words, at the beginning of sentences/paragraphs, which should be avoided at all cost.

That’s a lot of what I’m trying to fix in the text for the V4s currently.

I would also completely remove any mentions of what characters are thinking. Intentions are debateable, since it is, as you said, on a smaller scale than clone wars, but thoughts of a character should be omitted.

This is a very good point…

Overall I do like them and I think they are needed for additional information or to explain things that might have been cut, although the writing style does not remind me of Star Wars and immediately brings me out of the immersion.

I agree here. I’d considered cutting them out but realised they could be very helpful. I think you’re correct about the writing style… my main focus is to get across the information with the size that my text is… hahaha.

Out of interest, I put your first opening into ChatGPT and told it to rephrase it in a style similar to the star wars opening crawls:

The 2nd version reads a lot more “Star Wars”-y. It does embellish quite a lot, is rather long (and should be shortened) but in my mind it sounds more like something the Clone Wars narrator would say.

This is a very interesting point that I hadn’t considered…

I think I’m going to play around with this idea. If it improves the overall immersion and feel of the edit I’m down for it! 😄

Hello, I am currently beginning to watch Rebels in a bit of a rush because I didn’t watch it and I feel like I should complete it before moving to Ahsoka. The problem is I don’t have enough time to watch all the episodes, so I think this project could be my lifeboat before Ahsoka ends! (I’m scared becasue spoilers…).
Can I have a link? Thanks for your work!

Episode 3 of season 1 “Old Masters”: The audio is not in sync with the video, not sure by how much but it was a few ms behind. Had to correct it manually.

I had some time to check the audio and it seems fine to me. Are there any points in the episode where it stands out? And like I mentioned above, do you know what version and which release? 😃

Thanks for the feedback Toastb! I really appreciate you taking the time!

Writing the opening crawls is the element I’ve found the most challenging and every new revision I’ve tended to change or tweak them.

What have you thought about the quality of them in the V4?

I’ve tried to avoid a more grand view of what’s going on. Rebels is a much quieter and smaller scale affair then Clone Wars so I’m not sure that suggestion would suit it. But I’m always open to reworking them 😃.

When you describe the font, I’m not sure what feedback you’re giving. Were you saying you prefer Eddie’s font and setup over mine? (That’s how I’m reading it but I’m not 100% sure).

Is the audio out of sync for V4? And what are you watching 4K, 1080p recolor or 1080p? 😃

I do agree about the subtitles and that is something I will address but for now it’ll stay as that’s what my AI does. Once the whole edit is subbed I’ll think about fixing it 😃.

RELEASED S02E04 - Brother and Sister V4

Downloads

  • 1080p version: available
  • 1080p recolor: available
  • 4K recolor: available
  • Subtitles: available

Changes from V3

  • For all downloads 5.1 Surround sound added
  • Slight improvement to visual quality
  • Smaller file size
  • Updated intro helmet sequence
  • Revamped introduction text
  • Added episode title card
  • Smoothed musical transition between intro sequence and episode beginning
  • Further polish added to all cut transitions
  • Cut a scene of the Phantom taking off from the Ghost since this was established in new opening text and there is already plenty of shots of the Phantom in flight to the Clone Wars medical base
  • Cut expository dialogue with Sabine explaining they’ve arrived at an old Clone Wars medical base as it’s covered in the opening text
  • Reinstated moment when Sabine gets scared by Ezra to improve flow of cuts, without it Sabine goes from searching to suddenly in a different room and it didn’t make sense
  • Cut secondary establishing shot of Sabine accessing the terminal. As we didn’t cut to an ad break its no longer needed and halts the flow of the opening to the episode
  • Cut repeated dialogue from Sabine asking chop to turn off the power as she does not need to explain this twice to Chopper
  • Reordered the medical base powering on shots to make a smoother flow. Moved the shot of the powered on station to before Sabine talks rather then after. Cut from when Sabine asks chopper to turn the power off to him turning the power off.
  • Cut small establishing shot of chopper at the terminal, it used some weird cinematography that was no longer relevant due to previous cuts and in the current cut we already know he’s there.
  • Shortened shot of Imperial Star Destroyer hovering over the civilian transport ship to better align music for a cut transition
  • Cut shot of imperial star destroyer docking with the transport ship to speed up the pacing here
  • Cut a shot of the mother talking to her child, this is replaced with the second time she does this for pacing

Viewing Notes

Episode is essential. It sets up the main antagonists of the season.

Hi Eddie (or anyone else here with knowlegdge on the subjeect).

I am diving into the world of Star Wars fan edits.

We were quite daunted by the thought of 14 seasons of animated content between TCW, Rebels, Bad Batch, Tales of, even the live action shows on top of that with some of the filler they have. I say we haven’t watched it, truthfully we’ve both seen a few episodes here and there in passing and felt we would definitely not be able to stomach that much animated content in the writing style of the Filoni-verse.

However, we were both intrigued by the idea of movie cuts because it seems much more digestible (might take a couple weeks instead of months). I especially wanted to do this after I decided we were going to watch acbagels Mandalorian and BoBF movie cuts. Ideally I was aiming to just watch movie cuts of all the series. ((the only thing I didn’t see working was Tales of the Jedi, but its so small I didnt see it being a big deal)).

Hi Patali! I can’t speak for Eddie but I can speak as a fan and a faneditor. I would tend to avoid movie cuts for the animated shows as a first watch. I feel the movie edits work better for the live action series as they tend to follow the trend of one ark per season, the animated shows however tend to follow a few different ark’s throughout.

I’d think you’d find the most enjoyment from tv style edits such as Eddie’s as it takes the content and makes it more approachable. It cuts down drastically on the watch time and presents it in a way where if you’re not enjoying an ark, for the most part, you can skip it! This is much harder to do with the original series and difficult to do with movie style edits. On top of this for Eddie’s edit, there is a spreadsheet that covers different watch orders for what you’re interested in!

I hope this helps answer your questions 😃

As for the third episode of your season 2 edit (Pirates of the Horn), since I hadn’t watched the original episode, I admit that I was quite confused with what exactly was happening here. After seeing the original version, I really thinks v3 cut a little bit too much from the intro. Starting with Ezra and Chopper fixing the ship (1:48 of the original episode) while seeing the rest of the crew going on their mission would give us more context and a much more valid reason on why is Ezra all of a sudden kind of running away to find his own adventures.

Couldn’t agree more for the V3 version. I’m reluctant to include the beginning of this episode because all the characters are acting far too childish. A sneak peak at my V4 has a reworded text intro to make the introduction and context a bit more clear for the episode. Here’s what I’ve got currently:

Commander Rex, a Clone of the former Republic,
has joined forces with the Rebel Phoenix Cell.

Through his influence, Ezra Bridger is learning to
become an expert soldier and military tactician.

Ezra is becoming overwhelmed with his responsibilities
to the Rebellion, the Ghost Crew, the Jedi and to Rex.

Seeking a distraction from his commitments, Ezra has
taken the Phantom to investigate a distress signal.

Chopper, questioning Ezra’s motivation for answering
the signal, has secretly stowed himself on board.

After takeoff, Ezra discovered Chopper onboard….

The blue sky looks quite nice, but I’m not sure I see the difference with the lightsabers.

So the original lightsabers in the show have the color of the blade slightly bleed into the central white color. (I think this is due to how they create the lightsabers in the volume). They also can become see-through in motion. My version reinstates the pure white core and makes the outer glow closer to what you’d expect from the style of movies.

It’s a rather subtle difference and the brighter the lighting is in a shot, the more noticeable it is. For example, the lightsabers in episode 4 look how I’d expect them to but for the Corellia fight in episode 2, they do not.
