Info: New colormatching script

Hey, g-force.  Are you still planning to work on a YUV version?  It would be really useful.

By the way, does the option to determine the correction from two different sources and then apply it to a third get round the numerous colorspace conversions in the script?

You mentioned adding the option to balance the black and white levels to an updated version of the script.  Would it be possible to write a script that matches only black and white levels i.e. makes no color changes?  Could this be used to correct a source with a brightness-and-contrast problem by using another source or does it not work like that?

Dude, didn't see this until AntcuFaalb pointed it out. Sorry, I've been busy, and I still owe you a response to your e-mail. All these requests are definitely possible, but I just have to find the time to get it done.

Help: Looking for a Project Partner
Time

AntcuFaalb,

Let me be the one to say, I think you're NUTS! Here's why:

1. GOUT is unwatchable due to DVNR

2. 97SE is WORSE than GOUT due to DVNR

Get your goddamn captures done, and just forget about this project.

Okay, anyone thinking that I'm being a little harsh... AntcuFaalb and I talk quite often, and the mutual respect is quite high between us. I'm just surprised by what he's suggesting here.

Alright, I'm looking at the SW sample, and I don't see the crazy amount of temporal artifacts that the 720 mkv had, but it also looks less detailed than I remember the 480 mkv being (sorry, at work and can't compare). Anyway, the fine (good) grain seems to be gone and the big (some may argue ugly) grain seems to still be there. So, why bother?

I've tried to take into account what you said about the detail and the grain.  When you have time would you look at this?  If you don't think it's an improvement I think I will concede with you and just release a 480p anamorphic version with only adjusted levels and saturation alongside the 480p raw letterbox.

It's the same method in the script above but I've added some masks and a couple other things to try and keep detail.  I might have cheated a bit, I'm not sure.  I'll wait to see what you say.

It's a split down the middle of the frame comparison of the raw capture on the right and the filtered version on the left.

So, take a look at the split-screen sample you posted. Blow it up full-screen. Notice on the left how any little bit of camera movement or gate weave causes some things to move separately from other objects, like some panels on the x-wing move, while others stay still. I see none of that on the right side, the entire frame moves together. It's a common problem with temporal noise reducers.

my 2 cents.

my 2 cents... the noise reduction looks like ass, as all noise reduction does, but this one looks particularly bad (smearing, warping...).

On the other hand, the SD version is one of the most beautiful captures I've ever seen. I had to demux though, as I couldn't figure out how to play the second stream otherwise. For some reason it plays back with interlacing artifacts though, is it still interlaced?

May I suggest an in-between version with no noise reduction but IVTC'd?

anyway, you've set the bar pretty high on video caps. Nice work!

It seems that some shades of magenta have been globally replaced with a kind of greyish-brown. I noticed it also on some laserblasts.

That is my fault, since it was caused by the old color correction of the BD that I made for Harmy. Pushing down the magenta was the only way I could find that would globally fix all the problems with it. Seriously, the use of magenta in the BD is horrible. Lots of things that should be red is magenta. Heck, even stuff that should be a soft brown.

So blame me. And of course Lucasfilm for the terrible BD master.

Oh, I remember now, you were trying to get rid of the magenta tint on Uncle Owen's sleeve by use of selective color replacement, but didn't realize you used the selective color on the whole film.

In the dinner scene, the colors look off. Compare the colors of the flowers and foliage behind Owen to the still of the Senator Technicolor print. The greens are less bright, the purple in the flowers is too gray.

Sorry, my comments were a little harsh, and not very constructive. The clip actually shows some promise.

Well, You_Too gave you a good suggestion on sharpening. LimitedSharpen is nice in some conditions as well. Just don't over-do it. Doing nothing is always better than doing something with artifacts.

As for the denoiser, IF I had to choose one, I'd use either TemporalDegrain or a variant of it like MCTemporalDenoise.
