Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)

Personally, I think if he put cleaned/stabilised probe over the original it would look better - I don't at all like how the snow dunes/hills look in the filtered version. Parts of the probe have become thinner in the clean-up process.

It's just my opinion, and honest feedback. The Despecialised Edition is Harmy's baby and it will look however he likes best; no one is going to agree 100% with every opinion a restore makes or each decision that he or she makes with their work. Overall Harmy's work is outstanding, indeed invaluable, and most of us here share that opinion.

Okay, so you don't like the dunes, but you have to admit the probe droid and the blowing snow look better in 2.5 than in 2.0. No?

While I'm waiting for more ROTJ 35mm footage, I decided to take Team N1's recent Grindhouse release of Empire and start experimenting with it for ESB v2.5 and here's the result:

...

Harmy, with no disrespect intended, I don't like how that looks; it's like taking DVNR to the extreme. To my eye I prefer the 2.0 to the 2.5 in that shot.

Good luck with you future versions though, the work you've done is really commendable, and I take my hat off to you for taking on these projects. :)

What? watch again, paying particular attention to which is 2.0 and which is 2.5. I really think you must be mistaken. 2.0 has parts of the arms missing, and the blowing snow is nearly wiped out!

The Pioneer Reference Disc is in the mail and should be here soon but in the meantime I decided to share a 4 minute sample of what the R7G looks like. This is a single pass s-video capture with the comb filter set to 50% strength that is getting fed into the Theater750HD.

I haven't had much time to look it over but it seems like there is much less noise or interference on this player/output combo than on the hf9g composite output. The picture seems sharper. There is some checkerboarding on the first frame of a scene change. Overall, I think this is a bit better than the previous setup and with the 5 capture average method it might be a lot better. Thoughts?

BTW, I just did a quick manual IVTC so there might be cadence changes throughout, if only for a frame or two.  Also, i forgot to extend the luma white point while capturing so yeah there is some blown out whites but this should give a general idea of what the player's output is like.

R7G TEST SW JSC

Dude, I love this. Seems to have less dot crawl and rainbowing than I remember from other captures (sorry, I'm traveling and don't have anything to compare to at the moment).

Looking forward to more.

@chyron: Well, while this problem isn't completely gone, I would say it is definitelly diminished in the new version - here are the v1.0 shots you posted and the same shots as they appear in the workprint:

@doubleKO: The saturation issues have already been tackled (although in case of the unzoomed shots there may still be an occasional discrepancy here and there but it should definitely be lessened) and the Lando announcement shot is taken from a faded 35mm print, so it was pretty hard to get the colors looking even this good.

@bouvines:

The logo is the same one as in SW v2.5 and it's sourced from the BD of Alien.

As to why I decided to re-create the subs from scratch - well this is currently the best source available to me - and I mean literally that specific Daily Motion video.

Harmy, you nailed the reds, and Lando looks really good!

As to the cloud car though, that is from a 35mm scan (which I though was pretty obvious in that comparison) and looks exactly like it's supposed to - it was always a bit transparent.

Makes sense why I was surprised at how much more detailed the cloud car looked than previously. Nice!

Harmy said:

Well, of course I thought about stabilizing the GOUT automatically but you can't really do that if the camera is moving.

True, it probably would only work for when the camera wasn't moving.

Harmy said:

but they do look a lot better than in v1.0, which is quite something, considering that exactly the same sources were used.

 Agreed!

I like the colors! Glad you're considering all the sources. And you're right, Harmy, the GOUT elements remain the weakest link in this project. The Cloud Car that flies past Leia's window is nearly transparent, and the moire on the pre-dinner walk-by windows is really distracting. It appears that you've also done a better job stabilizing the GOUT footage than on previous efforts, but it's still a bit jittery and noticeable in scenes where it's next to the rock-solid blu-ray. Have you thought about stabilizing the GOUT automatically first, so you don't have to do so much by hand?

Otherwise, looking great as usual!
