I'm impressed by your edit as well as Dre's corrections. :)

Finally got a chance to look at these on my calibrated Plasma TV. I see what you mean about the color artifacts.
Just to throw another wrench into the works, on that display I preferred Harmy's grading (the last pic in post 338). At least in terms of luma, his was hands down the best. I did slightly prefer your colors in the last one however, Dre!

I will update the video sample, based on this color correction model.
Now I know you're going batty. Your best one is post 283.

Great stuff. I hope this works out.
I too hope poita's surgery works out.
The more I look at it, the more I like your result from post 283 better.
In comparison, I kinda prefer the coolness of the Stormtroop armor in that publicity shot.
-G
^^ I quite like that.

I think the new "Corrected" one is a little too purple, like you went too far correcting the green.
-G
Yeah, I think you're right. This looks a lot better:
that looks perfect to me! How different is this correction from when you were using Verta's Leia pic?

I think the new "Corrected" one is a little too purple, like you went too far correcting the green.

My opinion:
1. Tech IB print has colors that differ from the prints on opening day. They are all there, with little fading, but that doesn't mean they are the same as what was show at most theaters.
2. The scan that Harmy worked from had colors that didn't quite match the Tech IB.
3. Harmy merely approximated the colors of the scans he had. Sometimes to varying degrees of success.
So, that's 3 levels of wrong.
I think you're better off looking at something like the JSC, but again, that was fucked with as well.
Anyone looking to get the "correct" colors is on a fools errand. They no longer exist. There is no reference that I know of that is representative of them. Their fire has gone out of the universe. :)
-G
Yeah, DeHalo_alpha is not very effective, and kinda harmful from what I remember. I have little ambition these days to try fixing the GOUT any more.
-G
^^yeah, a little contrasty, but the colors are stellar! That method seems promising!

@Intruder
Looks pretty good! I can definitely see a bit of additional sharpening in the detail. Its awesome to see what others can do with the same script!
Although I think we can all agree that we have pretty much hit a wall with the GOUT here, I cant imagine more can be squeezed out of it without the use of high end professional grade equipment.
Don't forget it was pro equipment that got us into this mess to begin with! :)
About what else can be done, there exists a transfer function (and a bunch of other non-linear shit) that turned the 35mm frames into the GOUT we all know and hate. Take a raw frame, downsample it, throw away lines to get the same aliasing as the GOUT, FFT both, get the transfer function, iFFT the transfer function, convolve with the GOUT, and you should end up getting rid of the ringing/haloing.
-G
Crap. Those both looks so good, I want one half-way in between both!
-G
No way the Tech IB was how it looked in '77 for the vast majority of viewers. But, I like it, and I bet it and (hence Dre's color match) is much much closer than the GOUT.

Another option, especially if you want to listen to Harmy or I as well, is to subscribe with your favorite podcast app..
Harmy or me.

Dang, that algorithm is impressive, DrDre. I can't wait to see all the great projects that come out of its use.
-G
The fuchsia to red on the X-wing shot got a bit blocky, although everything else in that shot looks great. I bet the reference frame you are using just doesn't have enough magenta in it for a good mapping. I wonder what would happen if you used Mike's version of that frame as the reference.
-G
aside from being too bright, the '82 laserdisc has some beautiful color! Interested in seeing where this is going.
-G
Wow DrDre, these remind me of a movie I saw once as a kid. I think it was called "Star Wars".
-G
Better.

Here's what I believe to be the more correct adjustment to Mike's frame:
Just my opinion, but I think Mike's looks better. Your correction of his is too purple IMHO. Not even sure that his needed to be corrected.
Those corrected -1 frames are a huge improvement! What a great algorithm you have there!
-G
Holy Shit you guys (DrDre and archimedes), these look great!
