Color matching and prediction: color correction tool v1.3 released!
Time

Finally got a chance to look at these on my calibrated Plasma TV. I see what you mean about the color artifacts.

Just to throw another wrench into the works, on that display I preferred Harmy's grading (the last pic in post 338). At least in terms of luma, his was hands down the best. I did slightly prefer your colors in the last one however, Dre!

Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)

My opinion:

1. Tech IB print has colors that differ from the prints on opening day. They are all there, with little fading, but that doesn't mean they are the same as what was show at most theaters.

2. The scan that Harmy worked from had colors that didn't quite match the Tech IB.

3. Harmy merely approximated the colors of the scans he had. Sometimes to varying degrees of success.

So, that's 3 levels of wrong.

I think you're better off looking at something like the JSC, but again, that was fucked with as well.

Anyone looking to get the "correct" colors is on a fools errand. They no longer exist. There is no reference that I know of that is representative of them. Their fire has gone out of the universe. :)

@Intruder

Looks pretty good! I can definitely see a bit of additional sharpening in the detail. Its awesome to see what others can do with the same script!

Although I think we can all agree that we have pretty much hit a wall with the GOUT here, I cant imagine more can be squeezed out of it without the use of high end professional grade equipment.

Don't forget it was pro equipment that got us into this mess to begin with! :)

About what else can be done, there exists a transfer function (and a bunch of other non-linear shit) that turned the 35mm frames into the GOUT we all know and hate. Take a raw frame, downsample it, throw away lines to get the same aliasing as the GOUT, FFT both, get the transfer function, iFFT the transfer function, convolve with the GOUT, and you should end up getting rid of the ringing/haloing.

Here's what I believe to be the more correct adjustment to Mike's frame:

Just my opinion, but I think Mike's looks better. Your correction of his is too purple IMHO. Not even sure that his needed to be corrected.

Those corrected -1 frames are a huge improvement! What a great algorithm you have there!
