GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time
Well, I tried a test encoding last night to try to do a fast degrain stage. As I suspected, there were too many artifacts. So, if you're looking for good degraining, it's gonna be Slooooooow. I'll keep playing around with some and make a suggestion soon. But, this will at least involve putting an FFT3D in, or re-calculating the motion vectors to do an MVDegrain. These are both painfully slow and these would need to be in addition to what I'm doing in the latest script.

Are you trying to re-create them as per a specific video release or as per the theatrical print? Reason being is that I remember seeing Jedi in the theater and those two long lines that had to be cut in half on video were one single line in the theater.

I guess the video release is what I'm after, as I don't really want them over the film anyway.

Here is what I think are just the forced subtitles for ROTJ. Does anyone know differently? Also, should it be “50,000” or “fifty thousand” or “fifty-thousand”?

time indexes are for the SE, but I have left off the “do that again” line because I hope to translate these to the GOUT eventually.

Maybe I did use the wrong plugin because the last encoding looks more noisy to me than the previos encodings...

No, it will look that way. The problem is that, before, I was actually using the FFT filter to do some of the stabilization work, but that caused a lot of banding in dark scenes that I just couldn't live with. It also caused bad motion estimates in places that actually added to the instablilty in spots. This version trys to maintain more of the grain of the original, which I never really meant to remove in the first place. I have thought about an option to remove more grain for those that hate the grain, but it will slow down the encoding considerably, and I'm not sure how artifact free it will be. Hopefully you can live with it, but if not, let me know. BUT, isn't the image so much more stable now?!!!! (for instance, compare the "Along time ago..." scene)

Thanks! This is a cool thing!

I posted short clips of ANH, ESB and ROTJ. If they are to short, let me know.

OSJ,

those clips are very useful. Thank you. Turns out the PAL version is cropped on all sides more than the NTSC. I have updated the script on the first page with the correct crop values (only for ANH so far though) so give that a shot.

thanks,

Thanks OSJ! I can't view them while at work, since they block rapidshare, but I will look at them tonight at home.

I have updated the script on page one with what I'm pretty sure (90% sure) are the correct crop values for the PAL ANH. I will test them on the clips OSJ posted later.

The current script has a setting at the beginning that allows you to choose PAL or NTSC, and then the rest of the script crops and resizes the appropriate amount automatically. Give it a try!

I will do some encodings with your latest script for sure.

Your actual script v.1.05 has no parameters (for cropping and so on) for the PAL DVD so i wanted to ask if I can use your parameters posted in earlier scripts or can you not recommend it?

Ugh. I know, I've changed the crop values a few times in order to remove some artifacts, and I have not re-calculated what the PAL values should be, nor am I even sure they were ever right. I just couldn't figure out what was going on since your processed clips were my only PAL references, so I axed the whole PAL resizing stuff. If you would like, I could re-evaluate the appropriate crop values if you could encode and post a short, bright, unprocessed clip (no resizing, no cropping etc.) that shows the borders well. Might be worthwhile to post ESB and ROTJ raw clips as well, since you are anxious to do those too. I'm a ways off from doing the subtitles for ROTJ though.

I think you'll be happy with the quality and the speed of the script since your last encode. Sorry you have to do it again, but it'll be worth it! Post that clip and we'll get it right this time!

Hi!

Yppie, I have internetaccess again!

I have finished encodings on ANH and used your script for ESB too. Great work g-force!

Now the GOUT look the first time watchable to me.

Thanks OSJ! Just out of curiosity, which version of the script did you use? You really might want to consider re-doing them, as the most recent version (1.05) of the script is superior to anything before it. Dare I say I'm done? I think I'm officially done!
