is the gout on DVD in DVD quality

No.

budwhite said:

or is it just a transfer in LD quality.

No, it's worse than LD quality as seen by a lack of vertical resolution.

budwhite said:

Does it use the extra resolution of DVD?

No.

budwhite said:

It sure has more detail than my LDs...

More detail than your LD player.

But you'd need something like that black magic program that was able to do that, combine multiple sources that let all the cumulative picture detail be collected into one video.

I was under the impression that "Black Magic" did more than that. If that's all there is to it, we can do that with AVIsynth.

@ g-force,1 thing though, when we start working on this it will be in avi form, not m2v,so would you want a sample avi file as well?

Can't wait to take a look at these. I think I will soon need some AVIs, but let me see how far we can get with this for now. It's just so much easier to download if they are compressed, so let's start there.

GOUT image stabilization - Released

I would suggest taking one at a time. I suspect that the SE will require less filtering, and we will probably learn a lot from the JSC, so I would suggest starting with that one. I really don't have as much interest in the 97 SE, but could definitely help with that too.

You could send me a .m2v to get us started. Preferrably already de-interlaced and IVTC'd, as I wouldn't know what to do there. Also, the scene in Obi's hut has some of the more difficult material to filter, so maybe just that scene?

So I assume you made the appropriate changes to the PAL subs version to?

Yes.

dark_jedi said:

also would you say this is it,no more modding,so now we can partner up and do the Japanese Special Collection "Take 2" and the 97 SE Trilogy?

That's it. I'm only going to make changes here on out if there is something that we learn from filtering the Special Collection. The Japanese Special Collection is #1 priority in my book.

So, when will I have something to work on DJ?

Okay,

I'm a big fan of what Dark Jedi has done to the subtitles. First of all, I LOVE the color.

Also, when I would compare his subs with what I had in the script, his seemed a bit too small, but then mine seemed a bit too big. So, I decided on a compromise in size half way between his and mine. So I changed my script to use the color that he uses, and a size half way between his size and mine.

I have to add that when I say "My" subtitles, I really mean "the subtitles that started out as Moth3r's subtitles, and which I tweeked slightly"

I hope no one forgets how much of this script really belongs to Arnie.d and Moth3r.

I aplogize to them if they have felt in any way that I stole their fire. I really couldn't have done this, nor would have even thought of doing this without them.

and I agree that "screenshots" from all 3 will probably show a huge difference between them, but I have NEVER really based a lot of what I do on a single screen,I know you,DrM,and others here swear by screens, but we do NOT watch movies by stepping them forward screen by screen(well maybe some of you do)to me it has always been about the motion, the way we will see it on HDTV(regular TV for others)so that is why, like you said,V4 looked better to me,I watched them on my HDTV in motion.

You really need to see several screen shots as well as in-motion video to make good decisions.

Well sorry but I watched all three samples 1 right after the other and to me v5 looked worse, maybe DrM and others need to chime in then since I am not much help, since we all see things differently, and sorry I can't get exact frames,I capture them with PowerDVD.

Hey DJ,

I was only referring to your comment about the "two hands" thing. I don't doubt that you prefer V4 in motion. Are you sure I can't talk you into trying some more things?

Well I can try and get comparison screens later, but I can never match them up just right, but looking at the GOUT and the lossless avi from V4,they both look better to me anyways than V5,there is a little shake on the gold trim behind Han on all 3,but V5 looks worse, and his hand looks better on the other 2,especially the lossless avi from V4,hopefully this all made sense LOL.

DJ,

you've got to figure out how to compare exact frames before saying stuff like this. That last frame looks better on V5 than both the original and V4. (less like he has 2 hands and a lot less smoothing artifacts). If I had a fast PC like yours, I'd be able to compare them in motion a lot easier. ;)

Any particular scene you would like to see, just give me your trim settings and which movie you want, all 3 are still on and ready.

I'm most concerned about residual noise on fast moving objects looking noisier than the stationary backgrounds. I seem to remember the scene with Luke as he meets the Sandcrawler that was particularily bad with previous versions of the script. Also, I need to do some work on the sharpening, as I'm getting some halos. I'm also concerned about noise from frame to frame that doesn't change, and creates a look of a veil of noise that slowly changes.

I can't give you any particular trim settings, but keep an eye out for these things. I suspect a version 5.01 in the near future.

g-force,

I tried making the avchd file with your script and this is what I got, notice Han's hand in this screen, and overall this one looks fuzzier, pardon my choice of words I am not up on all the video lingo LOL.

DJ,

looks like temporal smoothing from the original GOUT to me. Hard to tell without a screencap of the original next to it.

i.e. upscaled with the EEDI2 algorithm

Minor correction: upscaled with EEDI2 and NNEDI! My method has some of the benefit of EEDI2's ability to connect more lines than NNEDI, but making sure not to introduce "blur bubbles". And yes, in case anyone is wondering, NNEDI2 makes no difference with this method.

and not sure what you mean by this "apply it to your PAL video" is that directed to me? if so I am not using PAL video,I am NTSC only.

Oops! I thought you were using PAL also, but that was OldSchoolJedi. Sorry for the confusion, as usual lately, you can ignore everything I said. ;)

dark_jedi said:

don't you think this has a pretty good chance of making a nice AVCHD project?

No. The GOUT doesn't even have enough resolution to make a nice DVD.

I will look into that,if I PM you the script I am using for the upconvert do you have time to take a gander at it?

Looks like the upscaling script you are using assumes NTSC, so when you apply it to your PAL video, the aspect is going to be wrong. I can help, but I need to know if this is what you really want, or if my thinking is off.
