These are looking ever more natural tones to me. Can you make a new clip to give an idea of the overall feel of this newest setting?

Here's a clip from that fixed tape (pal c.1982) playing on a tv taken with my camera phone (15fps), followed by a different clip from an ntsc tape c.1984 by which time it had been 'digitally mastered'. The analog mastered tape seems to be more detailed, less blocky/chunky to my eyes.

What, don't tell me this was the first time you fixed a VHS :-)
Yep, I think because I once tried to fix a music cassette and that was too fiddly I assumed video would be the same. But I wasnt going to give up on this vintage tape without giving it a shot. Glad I did.
I should probably stop derailing this thread now.

But wait! I can't believe this sellotape fix worked (and in spite of me breaking a tiny plastic hook for a spring which seemed to enable a bit to spring back in the process). I rewinded the tape and it plays but will it stay together when it gets to the sellotape join? Maybe I'll just stick to watching the first 20 mins.
VHS lives! (for the time being)

That texture is so nice, and the depth in those colours. Something about this format gives a nice depth of field.

Yep I don't think this method adds much to Gout, as it doesnt seem theres enough information there to finesse, it kind of ends up look a bit like a Seurat painting whereas with the BluRay it looks much more lifelike.

I've always felt this scene was too dark with little shadow detail.
These are jaw dropping. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is probably going to be more popular than Gout: Extremely Cruddy Edition.

I would'nt mind seeing some more with colour correction also. (without opening the floodgates as I know you are working on the PT) Would you be using one setting for the whole film or working on some scenes individually?

In the 'lost cut' described in the star wars insider article, the way this scene originally played was a lot less exciting=

I won't lie to you so far not many have been clamouring to see Gout: Extremely Cruddy Edition, even though it contains ultra rare footage long considered to be an urban myth: Luke throws the grappling hook and the camera reveals he misses on the first throw!

Having seen the VHS transfers more often than any other transfers of these films, I think I understand the aesthetic you're shooting for here, and I think you've mostly hit the target. However, I think the one thing that's "off" is the compression. Everything about these screencaps exudes nostalgia for those happier times when the SE's didn't even exist... except the giant blocky compression artifacts that are straight from the glory days of YouTube videos of cats falling off television sets.
Both aesthetics are extremely cruddy, I grant you, but they are from two very different cruddy video eras, and combining the two is a little anachronistic (the screenshot in the preceding post is the worst offender). NTSC VHS, for all its many faults, had zero compression artifacts. If needed, a softening effect can be created using a blur filter instead.
Yes the compression was mainly just in order to get the thing under the vimeo 500mb limit (488mb was the size file i ended up with and from which those screencaps come from) I also thought members would be much more likely to check out what is essentially a bit of an oddity if it was quick to download. One side of effect of the compression seems to be though it makes the colours less rounded and more like the uncomplicated colours of vhs, but as you say the artifacts then muddy up the picture.
