I was trying to match the warm, muted look of this picture Mike Verta took from that private IB Technicolor print screening he attended

Good job! On the other hand, I remember Mike saying those photos from the screening only had the correct hue. I don't think they have the correct saturation and luminance, so maybe they actually looked as saturated as the Senator screening. Though, the Senator pics are photos from a camera as well.

I think it was the right hue but the 70s hot bulb put it in a golden light ->

Yes I see now I pushed too far away from the subtle pinks of flesh tone (and into waxy yellow) both you guys managed to hold onto it by dialing down the red. Colour correction can't really be done incrementally with the VLC image adjust - I was aiming to tackle some of the scenes where the faces really burn like ben and luke @ the sandcrawler. A VLC adjust is really just to get a playing copy I can live with or inspire others through a beginners attempt (or annoy others through my attempt might be more accurate in some cases)

Scientific evidence as to why the Stormtroopers had miserable aim (and why the good guys had nearly flawless aim)
Time
I would think there would be more than four sentry TIEs in total - there might be a number of four ship teams flying in a large orbit of the Death Star at different points of the periphery- but once the Death Star was near completion it wouldnt make sense to bother with TIEs. Its like having a nuclear bomb and concentrating on surrounding yourself with handguns.

There is an even better explanation in the plot of the first film.

THE HOMING BEACON.

There would be very little point sticking one on the Falcon if the Empire intended to shoot and kill the escaping Rebels.

As Leia said, "It's the only explanation for the ease of our escape".

Why they are such lousy shots in the later films is where you need fancy theories.

That makes senses except for the stormtroopers in the sentry ships - would they have been briefed to attack and get blown up or not briefed and their ships handicapped in some way?

Something very similar to this pre production cantina scene and the prequels
Time
I think there was a sort of anaylsis in the revenge of the sith review on redlettermedia about the style in which two characters talking to each were shot across the prequels (to do with it being very static, uninvolving and repeatative). I recommend it if you havnt seen it - it may tie into the cutting of this scene

You're welcome, Baronlando. :) Unfortunately my capture of it is quite crude; the recorder captured it with a too low gamma, and I must admit that I did a quite lousy job when I set the contrast, combine that with the already wildly inconsistent contrast of the LD itself and you get a quite murky transfer. Don't know if it's something that can be partly corrected when playing with your TV-settings.

It's actually the above reasons that makes this transfer to look oversaturated and yellow, when corrected it's easier to see that it's mostly red/pink - shifted instead.

Thanks for capturing this LD msycamore (which I tracked down today), I played with the levels in image adjust on VLC in preparation to watch the whole film with just a little more contrast and lift the colours a tiny bit, this is solely based on how it improves it subjectivily via my laptop (it may look terrible for any other viewer). Here are the settings if any one wants to give them a go or tweak them further.

contrast 1.02, brightness 1.07, hue 0, saturation 1.04, gamma 0.72

Info Wanted: Calling all Color Correctors: Can this source yield a different set of results to Gout?
Time

Damn, well you're info on the TV broadcast versions now has pretty much killed my interest. I was looking at other photos from Tunsia locations just before the sun sets and combining that with what you pointed to about the different limitations of different capture methods, filtering etc. and when I look at a sunset like the following which contains so many different colours and brings out so many colours I don't see how the matter of the binary sunset can ever be settled definitely,

(more blue, more purple, more yellow, more sandy, more light, are too vague here + how is an early tv/vhs/laserdisc going to capture this complexity)

TServo2049 (or anyone) this is bugging me and probably has something to do with the complexities of color transfer but why does this 82 LD have so much extra colour in the bottom half of the picture? Here it is without my adjustment

Here is a shot from the actual location from an online site

I don't understand if the skies sort of match why the bottom half doesnt? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I've probably posted enough of them already one more isnt going to hurt

I'm not exactly sure what I mean by 'draining out' now I've read your explanation. Maybe incorrectly balanced or compressed on other transfers perhaps?

Do 8mm, 16mm and 35mm all 'hold' colour differently? I mean can you only fit a certain amount from a big colour cup into a small colour cup so to speak? If so, supposedly certain subtle tones will get shaved off and then if you add print fade and other adjustments on top of that when converting down to whatever your small format is then... = bad end result?
