Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time

What's up, guys. So, which is the best copy available? I've had this thing since I bought a VHS copy of it at some convention back in 1990 but was disgusted with the picture and sound quality...and that was when the thing was only 12 years old. I know there's a bunch out, but I'm only interested in getting the best version, so any advice would be great.

Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception (Released)
Time

I loved your edit, and I found it to be one of the best thus far. But it could be better, in my opinion. There are many more tweaks and edits that I would have made in this film, and if I had the skill and money to do so, I might do my own one day, too.

One of the things that I noticed that nobody decided to use was the deleted scene where Sebulba fires one of his sideburners at Anakin.

Instead of having the part break off during the race (which doesn't make sense that the pod engine would work after it did, by the way), why not use the deleted scene where Sebulba fires his sideburner to ignite Anakin's engine? It would explain why the thing is burning up, and why the flame was put out and the engine brought back to work, again.

The other thing I found to be so unlike the way the Jedi would be was how they seemed to be terrified to hear an explosion coming from the docking bay and then frantically igniting their lightsabers after doing so.

Once Sidious informs the Neimoidians on what to do with the Jedi, I would re-arrange the scenes where the gas was pumping in from the vent right after the protocol droid is serving drinks scene instead, and then have the ship explode in the docking bay. The next time you see the Jedi is when the droids open the door. It makes for a more dramatic re-introduction of the lightsaber and a more suspenseful action sequence when you don't know if the Jedi are still alive.

There are a lot more ideas that I would like to post here, but the bottom line is, this was your edit and I'm glad someone like you has the perseverance to keep trying to fix these films.

Help Wanted: Possibly starting brand new, HD edits of the prequels from blu-ray sources, need a bit of input here.
Time

I think Episode I can be improved upon through the rewording of the crawl, new voice over dialogue for both the Neimoidians and Gungans (so they sound less comical), and snips and tweaks that enhance the actor's performances and action sequences.

The hardest thing would be the voiceovers. I have yet to see someone do it in a professional way. I also think that if there were a lot more dialogue scenes that we're zoomed in (so there aren't that many silly cgi background distractions) it would improve a lot more of the performances, too.

In my opinion, butchering the story down to a hour long film is a waste of time and not worth watching. One only needs to do is make a point that the films do connect together, by making it known that the Clone Wars will start here with the acquisition of Naboo. The crawl should mention why this is — by being the sole place in the galaxy to contain a rare element that emanates a powerful energy that can be used in accelerated cloning, the Sith require it to begin their war against the Republic. Rewording the crawl to state the importance of Naboo is the first thing that should be done, so we the viewer know why the Federation wants it so badly.

Well, in any case, the mention of Naboo's rich plasma resources should be mentioned in the crawl, because it will also explain what that power facility that they fight in really is. ;)

I have to agree with Bingo...the Naboo planet should have more significance to the plot, and like you said, can only be pointed out in the crawl. As Bingowings has already mentioned, there would be an abundance of worlds in the Galaxy for the taking...so why covet Naboo, anyway? Having read the books himself, I think Lucas was going for the Dune analogy here, but for some reason decided to downplay it, instead. I like the neighboring system or former world ideas myself, but the one glaring thing that stares you in the face (that nobody bothers to emphasize in their fanedits as important) is the plasma facility, itself. This little tidbit is mentioned in the Darth Plagueis novel and holds a lot of importance to the characters in the book. And it is the one thing that makes Naboo sort of unique, too. Instead of saying abundant resources in the crawl (which I'm sure a lot of worlds are, anyway), why not go with rich plasma resources, so it specifies why the planet is so special. Once you read the crawl and later see the plasma facilities that the Jedi fight in, you'll understand why the Neimoidians would want Naboo.

Idea: HD restoration of the Phantom Edits..
Time

These Phantom Edits would also be a lot better if he didn't add his own freakin crawls to the films. It would have been okay to add them before the Fox fanfare, with music of his own, but not a part of the actual film itself. I don't know what the hell he was thinking when he did that. In fact, since he did a good job of creating his own crawls from scratch, he probably could have improved the wording of the originals a bit.

Idea: HD restoration of the Phantom Edits..

You know, there's not one prequel fan edit that I really like, but the Phantom Editor came the closest to what I prefer. But there were some cuts that he failed to make, or shouldn't have made, that hurt his version. The problem (I feel) is that everyone is trying too hard to make the movies different, instead of trying to improve the film that's already there. Too much butchering of the films only ruins them, and defeats the purpose of the edit in the first place.

The problem with making a HD version of the Phantom Edits is that you'd have to work from scratch, since the source material that was originally used is old. At the time even, he seemed to re-use footage from his original edited VHS copy on his DVD version, and there were things like rotoscoping (I believe) that he managed to do, also.

Bottom line is, you're better off just making your own version, since it would be a lot of hassle in copying the Phantom Editor's work.

Good luck.

Didn't Adywan say that he won't be taking any suggestions?

I apologize I never read that in the first post....

But i won't be taking any suggestions for changes/ fixes for the HD version

That confirms he pretty much knows exactly what he wants to do with it and to be honest that's really quite good.

Actually, there is one thing I would like to see improved...the Tusken Raider attack on Luke. Maybe he can speed it up a bit, so it looks more realistic. At least some of the shots should be, anyway.

I agree, Frink, and I would have no more written that than you would have; but I understood what he must have meant straight away and took it in exactly the same way that Bester did.

Oh, I knew he didn't mean it literally. But people who have no sense of perspective, or how their words might possibly sound, make me very grumpy.

My apologies.

I meant no ill will towards anyone. It was a joke...a poor one, at that. I only meant that it would be a shame if what he started was never finished, regardless of what happened. I have nothing but admiration for Adywan. I'm aware of how much hard work and risk he's taken to share in his edits, and like many of you, can hardly wait for each release. What he's doing is pretty much what we all thought should've been done with the Special Editions, and so I'm grateful that someone has taken the time to do a good thing for us old Star Wars fans. I'm sure I speak for most of the new fans, as well.

So again, my apologies.

I can't remember, did Ady fix the colours of the buttons on Vader's chest box? I noticed while watching the original, that ESB and ROTJ had different colour buttons compared to ANH (white, instead of orange/red)

I wonder if he'll edit the lights so they're no longer lit after Vader gets his circuits fried by the Emperor. It would make sense since his life support system is no longer functioning properly.

Hey, Ady, if you think the PT is trash, then why not just do the OT, instead? But why bother working on something that's already good, anyway? I mean, if any movie needs fixing, it's one of the Prequels. That's the real challenge, and one that everybody is only interested in seeing done. Hence the inspiration for so many fanedits across the net.

The OT certainly *used* to be good, but we've never been given a proper high quality DVD/BLU-RAY release of any of it as it used to be...and the subsequent 'Special Editions' have each been sullied with some pretty poor editing choices/changes over the years, and are no longer so good.

So I for one am looking forward to seeing all three of the existing OT movies being given such a rigorous overhaul by adywan, with so many attentive fixes along the way. And some of his early intentions for 'ROTJ:R' already sound intriguing. He's doing these primarily for his *own* satisfaction at the end of the day, so that's why he's doing these in the first place - and the current versions are still there for anyone that prefers sticking with those. Me, I'll be watching the 'Revisited' versions in future.

As far as the 'prequels' go, not everyone will be interested in seeing those 'Revisited', no matter how adywan goes about playing around with them...because there's just *so many* poorly written and performed moments throughout each of them, unfortunately.

And yet, there's *so many* different ways to alter them to improve things a little, so I'll certainly be one of the many interested to see how he chooses to personally alter things for himself, when the time comes.

Now 'prequel' talk...begone for now!

For one thing, he's not doing this just for himself. He's doing it for all to enjoy. Hence the reason why he's taken in fan input and instilling it into his edits. Nobody would go through all this trouble if they weren't. The Revisits are well known across the net and this will be his legacy when it is all said and done.
