I think The Patriot would fall into a strictly conservative category. I remember the outcry from the left when they showed the kids using guns. Oh the horror!

For the record, I have a son now. I'll be showing him how to safely handle firearms at a young age (he's 4 months old, as soon as he can hold things is when I start). Children shouldn't, imo, be taught to fear firearms. They at least need to be taught to get an adult if they find one. At best they should be taught how to use and/or disarm one. Even if you don't want your kids using guns, at least teach them to get an adult if they find one. Not knowing what a gun can do and not knowing to get an adult if one is found can be disastrous.

They bitched about that? Incredible.

Showing children how to safely handle firearms seems good to me. But as soon as they can hold a gun? Seems a bit soon to me.

I am a living testament that you need to teach your children about firearms if you plan to have one around. I am a cop now and my Dad has been for 36 years, whenever I was about 4 or 5 years old, my Dad took his really big and shiny .357 Magnum revolver from his duty belt, took all the ammo out of it, and handed it to me. He said, "Now, look at it, pull the trigger, see how it feels, but it is not a toy so you cannot play with it because it can hurt you and other people. But if you ever want to see it, just ask me anytime and I will let you see it." That whole experience pretty much crushed any curiosity I had about the gun and made it just another thing I saw that I'd already discovered. It no longer had the forbidden fruit aspect tied to it because I knew if I ever wanted to see it, I'd just ask Dad. I even had him show it to some of my friends, of course that was after my Dad had called their parents and got consent, but seeing as how my Dad was the Police Chief of the city, they all took his advice that it was better to explain guns to kids than hide it from them. Later on, whenever I was about 9 or 10, I asked him if I could shoot it because I was curious about what that felt like. Within hours, we were in the woods and he was showing me how to load, shoot, and safely handle the weapon. That had a profound effect on me and I carry on those principles today on the firing range it is also one of my many fond moments growing up and a cherished father/son moment that I often recall. I also learned that the gun is a one of the most elegant, powerful, and potentially disastrous things created by man and it had to be respected. I am now a Police Officer and have to carry a gun and have few around the house as well, and I know I will do the very same with my children whenever the time comes.

Pearl Harbor
Independance Day

Pearl Harbor is pretty much neutral. It's just a love story set in the context of that War.

Independence Day has some conservative themes (fight to kill your enemies, don't show them kindness once they've proven hostile) and some traditionally liberal ones (the idea that America needs its enemies to help fight the alien threat, for example). Overall I'd say it's more patriotic than overtly political.

I remember people commenting on this one when it was theaters that people cheered when the White House was blown up, but they also cheered when the aliens were defeated, kind of reflected the attitude of the people then. They were aggravated with the President, but still proud of their country.

Star Wars Fans Are Cool Regardless Of Age...

I read it, I didn't disregard it. I just wanted to explain my point and where I stood. That is the thing I really hate about any forum is that we all lose the sight and sound ability we have to read people, I've noticed so many problems coming from something being typed a certain way but read another. Either way, who cares, Cassidy we are both Star Wars fans, Originaltrilogy posters, and fellow humans. No problems, I did not intend to keep it going, as stated, I just wanted to air out my position and then be done with it.

Exegesis - "to read out of"
Eisegesis - "to read into"

Unfortunately in our modern world exegesis is becoming obsolete, as everyone rushes to read everything into everything else. Like lordjedi said, if you didn't know when Lord of the Rings was written it could be taken as a warning of where America is heading. You can read anything into anything you want. This is why 300 has been taken by so many to be complete propaganda in favor of taking out Iran. This is why so many have considered Children of Men to be somewhat about the current state of imigration in the US. You could take anything and make it anything else. This is why the Bible has been made to say and mean so many things is doesn't over the centuries. When you bring all this baggage with you into your arts and entertainment you are going to end up with some very "deep" and "profound" things that were never there to begin with.

That is really stupid about the "truth, justice and everything else", very retarded. I am getting sick of anti-Americanism in the US. Every other country has their right to be anti-American for whatever reason they choose, but for Americans to do it, this really proves the rotten state of things. That particular line would not have been one of those typically American things in a film. Usually the "typically American" things in films have to do with the very enthocentic world view Americans generally have, or just glaring bits of American culture that inevitable show up in own movies. Every culture has this, only Americans export a lot more films and TV shows than other countries do. Every culture has their quarks, America's just more visable to the rest of the world through our exported media.

Great info C3PX, I think another perfect example of eisegesis is where I heard a couple years back, I do not rememeber where, that some folks were believing that Revenge of the Sith was a play on the current Presidency. Implying that the Emporer was Bush and how he organized the Empire was how Bush was organizing his Empire by making up the whole mulsim extremist stuff. It was a bunch of crap and stupid, but a perfect example of eisegesis. I like that word.

I don't understand anywhere in any of my responses that I implied I thought little of myself, but okay.

My assertion is not that George Lucas is the devil. I do have much respect for the man and appreciate everything he has given me. I would shake his hand and thank him if I met him tomarrow. My wonderful memories from my childhood of the early 80's are great and filled with Darth Vader and Tie Fighter toys. That said, I still cannot condone his revisionist ways and complete lack of regard for the preservation of his original ideas. I am cool with re-doing them all he wants, put Jango Fett on the Second Death Star for all I'm concerned, but for crying out loud, give us ONE completely restored release of the OOT as it was presented in it's original theatrical release. That is my contention, I hate that my one uttered statment caused this thread to spiral out of control, but you presented a question, I answered in my opinion, and I get blasted by you. That makes no sense to me and I'm sorry you cannot stand the point of view I carry. Believe it or not, I do agree with you that there are a group of poeple who constantly whine and quibble over the stupid little stuff, but I fall nowhere in that group.

Anyone else totally disregard Obi-Wan being Anakin's friend?
Time
Yeah, I think somebody said on this forum one time that Padme should have escaped and hidden on Alderaan visiting and tending to Leia under the pretense of a nanny. Eventually, Padme was hunted down and killed by agents of the Emporer, without Vader so much as knowing, so as to prevent her return and instigate a redemption of Vader. Leia's memories would have been thusly justified Leia's memories line by being told by Bail and his wife that the woman who tended to her exclusively when she was very young was her mother. I forget who wrote that, but I thought it was so much better than how Lucas did it, lost the will to live, stupid. As far as, Obi-Wan and Anakin, I can't disregard that becuase according to SW '77, they were friends.

Well, Obi-Wan still would have lied, since he claimed Vader murdered his father...UNLESS...

During the Clone Wars, Anakin was cloned without his knowledge - that clone, subservient to Palpatine, would become Darth Vader. He would have killed Anakin, infiltrated the Jedi Order, impregnated Padme (who assumed it was Anakin the entire time), and when the destruction of the Jedi was nearly complete, reveal everything to Obi-Wan in a Bond-villainesque kind of way. The one thing Darth Vader didn't plan on, in this scenario, was Obi-Wan beating him down in a duel near a volcano.

How does that twist work?

Pretty sweet idea. A little hard to explain though.

Hard for the characters, as in Obi-Wan explaining to Luke? Well, nothing has to change otherwise. When Obi-Wan tells Luke his father's history, Obi-Wan doesn't know that Vader's his father; he assumed the entire time that Anakin was. (In my scenario, Vader didn't reveal his impending fatherhood because he didn't know about it himself, nor did he care - he was just fulfilling his role as the Emperor's mole)

So how does Vader know that Luke is his son? Inductive reasoning. Last name Skywalker, considers the possibility that he may have impregnated Padme during his "mole time", he can sense Luke's midichlorian count, uh, I mean, strength in the Force. Presumably, Vader's own strength in the Force permits him to put all of that evidence together - after all, he located the Rebels after a quick viewing of the powr generators on Hoth.

The only thing lacking with this storyline is Obi-Wan's explanatin to Luke - the content is more consistent than before, but not entirely consistent.

"A young Jedi named Darth Vader - who was a pupil of mine until he turned to evil - helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights. He betrayed and murdered your father...now the Jedi are all but extinct."

In the Anakin-clone scenario, Vader didn't betray; in a betrayal you first earn the confidence of the victim. The Episode III dialogue explaining that away would have been very...contrived.

Plus, in this scenario, the POV scene would have needed to be redone with Ewan McGregor giving all-new dialogue. I liked McGregor as Obi-Wan a lot, but the last thing ROTJ needs is the insertion of one of the PT actors as a Force ghost to...oh, that's been done already. Disregard.

Now that you mention it, it is very surprising Lucas hasn't made Ewan do all of Obi-Wan's force ghost appearances and replaced all of Alec Guinness' work.

Although I do watch and enjoy parts of the PT, I am mostly a OT fan and also a SW only fan. I can accept either and all on their own merit, regardless of how bad I think Ep I is. But my wife, whom I practically turned into a Star Wars fan, is a child of the PT revisionist years and never knew a time when Yoda didn't do cart wheels and the Emporer was known by no sith title. So, she completely freaks and hollers,"EWWWWW" every time we see the incestuous kiss scene in ESB which hinders my desire to ignore it. Which brings me to the fact that I now only acknowledge only the existence of ADM's ESB and no other.

Alec Guinness's Birthday today
Time
Yeah, I'd say that they sure don't them like Mr. Guinness anymore, guys who were truly dedicated to the actual art of acting and not just the fame and fortunes. If they do exist today, they rarly venture out of the theaters in which they act. I'd have to say that Guinness' character is the main reason I love Star Wars, I just cannot get enough of his Obi-Wan and I was quite pleased with Ewen McGregor's take of it. Guinness' portrayal of the wise, noble, elder Jedi master was much like his actual life, the wise, noble, and elder actor. I do miss him although I never knew him.

Every community I've been to where they all speak Spanish is ALWAYS run down and old, so it is a ghetto language to me.
