Notebook or desktop ... ?

I'm graduating from high school in a month. For fall semester, I've been accepted to Columbia College Chicago with a major in Film & Video, concentration on Film Editing.

With my graduation money, I'm going to buy a computer for school. A Mac is my only choice, to run Avid Xpress Pro with the possibility of also running Final Cut Studio, among other uses. So here's my question: A Mac Pro desktop, or a MacBook Pro laptop?

Here's the hardware configurations I've narrowed it down to:

MacBook Pro
17-inch widescreen display (1680 x 1050)
2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
3GB RAM
200GB hard drive
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 (256MB)
8x "SuperDrive" dual-layer DVD burner
Three USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire 400 port, one FireWire 800 port, one ExpressCard/34 slot
Total: $3,255 (with student discount)

Mac Pro
23-inch widescreen HD display (1920 x 1200)
Two 3.0 GHz Intel Xeon "Woodcrest" dual-core processors
4GB RAM
750GB hard drive
ATI Radeon X1900 XT (512MB)
Two 16x "SuperDrive" dual-layer DVD burners
Five USB 2.0 ports, two USB 1.1 ports on keyboard, two FireWire 800 ports, two FireWire 400 ports
Total: $5,148 (with discount)

I am on the fence as to which I should chose. I'm looking for any and all suggestions, advice, etc. ... anybody have any ideas?

I am not a Mac guy, I wouldn't mind trying to be someday, but if you want to do any video editing, I'd roll with the desktop Mac Pro, seeing as how it has a bigger HDD, a far better video card, and a much faster processor. That set-up you have should suit you for the course of your college career. The only way I'd run with the MacBook Pro is if you don't mind sacrificing a lot of space and speed in order to have the portability. Good luck on your choice and in college!

Yeah, I don't read the comics, but a comic book reading buddy of mine told me that Venom wasn't as bad a guy as the movie would have you believe. The original comic book version of him depicted that he actually saved folks and everything, he just hated Peter.

Got to see it last night. Not as bad as I thought it would be, but I have to agree with many of the assessments on this thread. Emo Peter got way too much screen time that Venom was absolutely cheated out of. Seeing Topher Grace's face plastered on Venom every time he talked was excessive and did take A LOT away from the idea of Venom. Yes Topher's voice sucked for Venom. I didn't have too many issues with the Peter dancing scene, but I wished they would have scraped it in favor of more character development of Venom, as noted above. Yes, this franchise, is now officially riddled with crying people. I also did not understand the purpose of Sandman, I would have liked it better if the Doctor's scenes would have been added. I agree with more here that Sandman could have also been scraped and let that time be put on Venom, as noted above.

Do you think Lucas will be as big as Kubrick?

I dunno, I don't think anyone will be able to achieve the Francis Ford Coppola Godfather, couple that with Godfather II, nothing will beat that at all.

Except for maybe Godfather III! I'm sure that would be incredible.

I don't know if we'll ever see that, Al Pacino hasn't made a film since 1975 and Francis Ford Coppola has been MIA since 1974. The last film he made was Godfather II! Hopefully it'll happen in the future, maybe just maybe.

I was also just thinkin', I wonder what Darth Vader looks like under that helment? Do you think he's human or some other species? I wonder why he has to wear the suit? I bet he may be some sort of species that cannot breath oxygen and has to have whatever environment he needs artificially generated by the suit.

I saw it twice. I went once, and then immediately bought another ticket to see it again! This was amazing stuff! Incredibly realistic. I also liked the concept where everything is worn down, instead of brand new. Good schtuff... I bought another ticket to see it yet again! When is it coming out on Betamax/VHS?

Also, I personally think Leia would end up with Han (In the sequel...I bet there's a sequel), because that would make it more unexpected to the plot.

My hopes for a sequel would obviously be a Luke/Vader duel, and a final battle with the rebellion and the empire in space!

No way a princess would ever go for a space rat like Han, I have my money on her and Luke hooking up, I mean, did you see how enamored he was with her and how they had so much chemistry. I do agree that Luke/Vader need to duke it out, I hope to see some more of those light sabers in the future. I am starting to doubt a sequel though, I mean they blew up the Space Station and killed Tarkin, the head bad guy, I know Vader maybe lived, because we really don't know what happened to him after he flew into space. But I guess it is the movies and they can pretty much do anything now, those special effects are just top notch. I'd sure like to me a stop motion animator someday, I'd bet after this movie stop motion animators will be in high demand for decades to come.

A friend of my Dad's friends has one of those Betamax machines where you can watch movies at home and I am sure they will release Star Wars on it by next year. I'm gonna buy it and go over their and watch it everyday, at least until my Dad gets a Betamax. Anyone look at VHS, I've heard it isn't half has clear as Betamax, so it probably won't last, so I'll stay with Beta.

Who do you think will end up with Leia, Han or Luke?

She'll end up with Luke for sure. He is the real hero anyway, Han is a bit of a jerk and nearly left them for dead, it was probably his giant dog thing that talked him into going back to help. If there are any sequels, she'll end up with Luke, you'll see. I bet Han won't even be in the next one. Anybody ever see American Grafitti? The guy who played Han was in that too, I think. He can't act to save his life! But the guy who played Luke was great, I bet we will be seeing a lot more of him.

Oh, and what did everybody think of Carrie Fisher (the girl who played the princess)? Man, I'd be her only hope any day of the week!

I don't know if they will make a sequel, but if they do I sure hope that that Luke kills the Darth Vader for killing his father and Obi Wan. I really liked Obi Wan. I don't know know that Vader is pretty mean and tough, I bet he'd never concede and bow to anyone, so Luke as a tough fight.

Yes, that Fisher girl is so damn hot!!! DId you get a load of her hair???

Better yet, what parent actually let their kid get that? I think if my kid came running up asking for one, I'd say "Well, uh, hey look over here at this XBOX or perhaps a TICKLE ME ELMO!" Anything but that damn lollipop.

Grab one of those bad boys for the wife...

Now, that is a good thought, damn good idea Cassidy!
