Steve Jobs is dead
Time

RIP Mr. Jobs....

Mr. Steve Jobs pretty much admitted he stole ideas, and made them better in his execution, something I appreciate. I believe that many of his ideas actually rushed our development in certain areas where they otherwise would have been stagnant for years and years. It's not so much he was a revolutionary as he was a evolutionary, either way, I respect him immensely. I good capitalist always gets my respect, if at least for having endured the stress and worries involved in seeing his vision come true.

Han never shot first (he just shot) and it made perfect sense and looked natural.

It made the character feel both realistic (within the fictional world) and plugged the scene into memories of watching countless westerns on television (usually with a roast dinner on my lap).

I was seven years old but once again two real look suns setting in the same sky really sold the location as being in the same sort of place that Westerns and Biblical epics existed in but also as an alien planet where anything could happen.

People make fun about Frink's mom because they are jealous.

+1, especially on the westerns and the roast dinner, seriously!

Of course, here in Texas just about every party is an outdoor barbeque, and of course, the bees seem attracted to those.

That's because we make the best barbecue there is.  ;-)  Well, that and all the sweet smells of sugary drinks that inevitably get opened and left sitting out.

The way you and Frink are with bees, I'm that way with snakes.  I go out of my way to avoid them.  I have some land in the pineywoods north of Houston and I'm never without my snake boots - even though I've never seen a snake out there.

Like Frink mentioned though, if you're allergic, that's a very good reason to stay clear.

Hey! I'd forgotten you were a fellow Texan! Yep, we sure do make great barbecue.

As far as snakes, I don't like'em, but so long as I know they are there it doesn't bother me. Especially if I know what kind of snake it is, you know there are only four venomous types in Texas. Rattlers, Copperheads, Cottonmouths (water moccasins), and Coral Snakes.

I cannot tell you how many calls I've been on where I get on scene and person says, "Officer, the snakes right inside the house, I don't know where he is at in the house though, when I saw him I ran out and called you."Those kind of calls are very unnerving. I don't know where the snake is in the house AND I have no idea if it is a venomous one or not. Too many people confuse Bull Snakes for Rattlers though, mostly because they do look alike, but Bull Snakes are infamous for "pretending" to be rattlers. They'll wiggle their tail against something in order to make the tell-tell rattle sound and that usually freaks out people. But a rattlers rattle is pretty distinct and the Bull Snake can rarely be close enough to an object that would provide the optimal noise.

I have to admit, I LOVE myself snakeskin boots. I have about 10 pairs. Rattler, boa constrictor, and python. Plus, my guitar strap has a portion of rattler skin inlaid on it.

This warms my heart.  Of course, you have a legitimate reason to fear the bees, while I'm just a yellow-bellied yank coward, but we're still brothers-in-bee-fear-arms ;-)

*flashes two thumbs up in unity and solidarity!*

Had something weird happen to me tonight.   I am 37 years old.   The photo in my Avatar was taken some years ago.   I went out to dinner with my parents tonight.   I ordered a drink.   The waitress carded me.     Is there anyone here  that would confuse someone who is 37, with someone who is less than 21?    Would you question that person in my avatar is over 21 years of age? I've aged since that photo!

She might have been flirting with you, Warb!  Did you get her number?

I demand an updated photo for a fair assessment of the situation.

That said, when you see a swarm or giant cluster on a tree branch or the side of a building, that's when the bees are usually the least aggressive.  they're in the process of finding a new home, have no babies, and no real food stores to protect, so they're largely uninterested in anything else.

Weird. I totally missed this thread until it was just bumped.

Anyhow, I'm pretty allergic to bees. Had a yellowjacket somehow get in the house on Thanksgiving of '05, I was sitting on the couch, waiting for my Dad to set out his famous Turkey and Stuffing when *WHAMMO* it stung me on the back of my neck!! It hurt like hell the rest of the evening, swoll up, I was a mess. I loaded up on tylenol and benedryl and made it through.

As far as your comment I quoted, Anchorhead, this happened to us last fall. Me, my wife, and my just about to 2 year old baby girl were playing around in the front yard. We'd set out a blanket by a 6 year old oak tree and we were just having a good ol' family time. I looked up and saw a ball of bees hanging off the side of the tree about 5 feet from us. They had to be at least a foot in diameter. I freaked out, rushed the family inside, and called a dispatcher at work who is also, like you, a beekeeper. She assured me they wouldn't hurt a fly, due to their migrating status, but I stayed inside. She said they'd leave in a few hours, sure enough a few hours passed and they disappeared.

I'm the big joke at parties, I tend to freak out at any sight of a bee, due to my allergic reaction to their sting. I look like the biggest dork dodging and bobbing when one buzzes by. Perhaps having the Off Topic area catagorised and having a small degree of moderation of certain areas and a total hands off approach to others would lead to a happier atmosphere.

Moth3r did express frustration that people starting Off Topic thread seeking advice over things like purchasing hardware were getting a lot of zany antics and board family feud stuff chucked in.

If there was an Off Topic Moderated zone too that could be a guaranteed safe haven for those sort of threads.

I liked how it was was before, practically un-moderated, but that fact wasn't advertised so boldly.

There was, and is, very very minimal moderation when someone really spins off the rails or spammers take over. For the most part, most members could get into a real knock down drag out post fest and things could find their natural conclusion without the need for being disciplined or moderated out of the forum. I liked it that way.

09/11/2001-09/11/2011 Ten Years Later
Time

I had gotten off that morning from work at 6 a.m. CST after working a 12 hour shift. I was still a rookie, had just a little over a year on the streets.

My wife (then girlfriend) was going to college in Waco while I was living in an apartment south of Dallas. I was settling down in bed flipping the channels and called her at the usual time like we did every morning we were apart due to my job. We were chatting while she was getting ready for school. I noticed that all the channels seemed to be having special news breaks. I told my wife something was up. She turned on her television and we learned a plane had struck the World Trade Center. I remember laying there in bed and telling her that it didn't make sense to me, a plane hitting the WTT, it all seemed just too odd to me. We gabbed a little more about it and then we both, at the very same time since we were both watching Fox News, saw the second plane hit. After a brief minute or so of silence, I finally said to her, "We're under attack."

We talked about it, she started crying, I was up in arms, ready to fight somebody, my natural urge to fight came out very strong, but I had no enemy to fight in my bedroom that morning. We finally decided it was best for me to just stay where I was and she do her normal routine, which was go to school.

I stayed glued to the TV while she went to class, they let her out fairly quickly due to the events of the day and she immediately drove up to my apartment, which was a hour and fifteen minute drive.

She got there about 11 a.m. and we stayed glued to the TV. I finally had to get a little sleep since I had to be back in uniform and on duty at 6 p.m.

I had some very restless sleep between 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

I got in uniform and went to work, my colleagues and I simply sat watching the closest TV for hours, we didn't have one call that night. We watched President Bush address the nation, we watched helplessly as our fellow Officers and Firemen struggled at Ground Zero and at the Pentagon.

The lives lost, the needless pain and suffering of thousands, really tore a hole in my heart.

I have to admit though, the two or three months after 9/11 were the best of my career, thus far. People actually appreciated me and my job, they never failed to tell me or show it. Whether I was giving them a ticket or helping them quell a neighbors dog, they'd always be grateful to me for my service. It was remarkable to see so many people from different walks of life actually thank me for just doing what I had to do.

Seriously, it was remarkable. I'll never forget that feeling. I never felt I deserved the praise and adoration I did get, but it was very eye opening to see how great the people in our country can be. It was then I placed a lot of faith in my fellow humans and fellow Americans.

It did really bother me to have to receive the hand shakes and the comments when I was still alive and well while thousands weren't alive to get that which they deserved.

Just a short year and one month later I would burying a fellow Officer of my department who had been slain during the murderous rampage of a psychotic nut. He had relieved me that morning he died, it could have been me, the schedules been different. He wore the same badge and uniform as I did. It all happened to me again, but on a much smaller scale. But that, is another story.....

Accuracy of Sandpeople vs. Imperial troops

Not defending Lucas' BS here, but I've always understood the "accuracy" statement to mean "what they were aiming at" rather than "how well they shoot". It is this way, even in modern shooting styles. You can be precise and still not be accurate.

i.e. try to stop an Abrams tank, it'd take a person extremely experienced to do so with a few rifles.

In this instance, Sandtroopers would know what to shoot to take down any large mechanical object on the planet their assigned based upon years of experience and training.

Sand-people, on the other hand, would just guess and shoot. Hitting whatever they felt would disable the machine. Therefor, it'd take a trained troop of stormtroopers 10-15 shots to stop a sand-crawler, whereas a group of sand people would take 100 or so shots to have the same effect.

Maybe I'm justifying Lucas' BS here, but I'd just never been able to criticize this part of our argument.

Even if it's something as simple as keeping an eye on everyone on Detention Block AA-23.

On a side note, I really think we need a thread/forum with this name... perhaps for listing banned members? :P

Seconded!

I third that suggestion!

Also wouldn't mind seeing why the certain person was banned. That can be simple (i.e. spammer, abusive behavior, violation of rule XXXXX, repeated violations of misc. rules, etc), no details necessary.
