how to rate movies
Time

timemeddler said:

here’s my system

  1. if it was made in the last ten years, it probably sucks.

  2. if it’s getting rave reviews and I’m seeing posters at walmart, it probably sucks.

  3. if it was directed by jj abrams, I KNOW IT SUCKS.

  4. if its a remake of something good, see number 3.

Thank you for your opinion, I’ll be sure to remember it when I’m trying to recall the reasons I hate most of the internet now.

Darth Vader's suit

I never really noticed much difference in the costumes between the movies. The armor pieces in ANH look a little more metallic where in the later films they are just black.

When you investigate where the name came from, it is almost impossible to ignore Dark Father and the implication that he was someone’s father from the very beginning. Whose may have changed from draft to draft, but I think by the time it got to the production phase that he was Luke’s father from the outset. Two clues give this away to me. First, the lightsabers. The Anakin and Vader sabers are nearly identical. This may be a coincidence because of the source of the parts, but Kenobi’s saber is vastly different. Second, Alec Guinness delivers a masterful bit of acting just before he launches into the explanation of Luke’s father. Either that is the most awesome coincidence or George told him Ben was lying to Luke. It is just a quick change of expression, but it reads to me like Ben knew what he was about to tell Luke was a deliberately slanted point of view.

Lucas and the Star Wars production were famous about not revealing secrets so Lucas could have had the existing story (of 4, 5, 6) planned out from the outset with Luke and Leia being siblings and Vader/Anakin as their father. He just didn’t tell anyone who didn’t need to know and even then, not before they needed to know it. Like Prowse’s line on set “No, Luke, Obi-wan killed your father.” Prowse didn’t know. Only Mark Hammil, Lucas, and Kershner knew on the day of shooting and they only told Mark shortly before shooting. Leia being Luke’s sister would be another such item that Lucas would not tell anyone the real story until it was time.

Also, the saber duel on the lava planet was planned from the beginning. I knew about it very early on. Not sure when it was mentioned or how. Though it was originally just a volcano.

Nope. You’ve been drinking the Kool-Aid my friend. I believe that Vader and Anakin were separate people until like the 2nd draft of Empire. I haven’t gotten to the part of “Secret History of Star Wars” when Lucas decides to just cut out the sequel trilogy and have Luke’s secret sister just be revealed as Leia.

Also they digitally fixed some stairs in the 2009 remaster?

I got the stairs, but this just looks like a mistake, not an intentional mistake.

The director oversaw this cut, therefore this is a deliberate creative decision.*

*I’m so teasing, its just a mistake. An odd one to have though.

I popped in my legit retail BD of Lethal Weapon to see if it had the same problem and it wasn’t as bad but then I also photoshopped Mel Gibson’s eyes so they were looking in different directions and I could start to tell it had the same problem too.
Example

Just a quick heads up, don’t know if this can be taken care of in 3.0 or not.

New Avatar Found.

Why no TFA Blu-ray commentary track?

Wow, am I ever glad I got out of the house this afternoon! 😉

A double dip with new extras timed to the next film in 2017 seems likely. Has JJ done many commentary tracks? (I only have Trek '09 besides TFA.) I would be more interested in a cast commentary at this point though.

Into Darkness’ track was a digital exclusive, so is 10 Cloverfield Lane (which he only produced), but Super 8 has one on disc. It may be just a timing thing.

Is there anything that you actually like about the prequels?

TFA has two huge ones that cannot be fixed unless you edit the film.

I must be extremely stupid, what huge plot holes are there in TFA that are inconsolable?

So, the Falcon leaves Jakku… How does Han happen to be right there? Where is the First Order. They were in orbit of Jakku and not having patrols out to detect an escaping ship is incredibly stupid, especially when Kylo Ren is so keen to capture them. The leaked spoilers said they jumped to hyperspace and then Han found them. As it sits it is a huge hole. Then there is Starkiller Base firing on the Republic. Nothing about it is explained in the movie. We know there is a Republic, but how big is it? They have a fleet, so was the entire fleet in one place? They destroyed a system and just how did the people on Takodana see it? Is Takodana is the same star system? How is the republic destroyed by destroying one star system? The Old Republic spanned thousands of system so is this a little upstart or will the Republic regroup? How is the fleet destroyed? Any government dealing with an adversary will have multiple fleets. Was a special event going on that brought all the ships of the fleet together? That entire sequence made no sense. It required me googling info on what they had intended (some of the missing deleted scenes) to even get an idea of what had been intended. As it is now, it just doesn’t work. It leaves more questions than it answers. Lucas managed to not have any such glaring absence of data. He always managed to keep the audience informed about what was going on. This just feels like sloppy writing combined with sloppy last minute edits and the result is a section of the movie that really ruins it for me.

Oh, plot holes on the level of “How does Luke just fly away from Hoth during a blockade?” and politics stuff that most people don’t care to follow anyway. There’s a Resistance because the Republic refused to have a fleet. The little fleet they did have exploded when the senate blew up. These aren’t plot holes, these are inconveniences for people who don’t want to like a movie.

I think when a new user comes in and asks about a side project of a fan edit that became “official”, that person has some idea he’s going to present to the fan editor. Therefore, it should probably be discussed at large to make sure it hasn’t been suggested before or isn’t already in the works.

JEDIT: He answers! No harm done then. Still odd he wanted to know the timeframe of the officiality of a fan edit.
