The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **

“this film was more a retrenchment to things you had seen before and characters you had seen before” - JC

Which was the admitted purpose of the movie? Except for the “visual imagination” part, this excerpt isn’t really bashing as much as him seeing what TFA was supposed to do, reintroduce the universe to new fans by doubling down on what people liked from the OT.

"Best" home releases of the pre-SE original trilogy?

So ultimately the DVD release is inferior to the laserdisc, due to the generational losses from the conversion?

Can anyone give me a hint about the actual useful vertical resolution of a widescreen LD?

They transferred the Laserdisc master poorly, yes. IIRC, Laserdisc is SD, so 480i, minus the black bars of a 4:3 matted release…

Has Ady ever thought about having a download page for Revisited similar to what Harmy has for his work? From what I can tell Harmy’s threads don’t seem to be as cluttered with daft questions and requests for invites since he made his.

I’m sure we’ll come up with something when the release time comes.

Ah jeez, searched up “furry” and the first image I saw was a bunch of dudes in anthropomorphic animal costumes. I won’t go searching any further into this.

Don’t need to search any further. That’s it.

From what I understand, some do it for fun, some because they identify as animals, and some because it’s their kink. In any case, it’s their own business.

I wonder if he’ll have that backpack a lot. Like, you know, not just shedding his clothes on the ground to be found by someone who recognizes the clothes and now thinks Peter is running around without any clothes on. However, he might be able to be IDed by his backpack. “I know a kid who talks like that who is that size who acts weird and carries that same backpack!”

Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

  1. There are some kind of legal disputes between Disney and 20th Century Fox, though they seemed to have resolved this enough to re-issue the Blu-rays and put out a digital download release.

This is the theory I’m sticking to. Fox still owns physical distribution (all the Blu-ray reissues are “Complete Saga” / Steelbooks with only Fox logos). The digital release was apparently a loophole that Disney was able to utilize, but you can’t buy ANH on Disney’s digital store and they didn’t remove the Fox logo from the beginning of it.

I feel like Fox may be upset that LFL didn’t sell to them, and on top of that sold it to their biggest competitor who is probably trying to take the remaining Marvel properties back, which would hurt Fox’s bottom line even more. Fox could probably legally release an OUT of ANH, but at this point they can’t access the film because the LFL archive is beyond their reach. A restoration would require them working together, especially if it covered the entire OT. And even then, Disney would be distributing a movie with the Fox logo, because no one would want an OUT without it being U.

Dammit, StarTrek.com, this is why we can’t have nice things. There’s really no excuse to use the first thing that shows up on GIS when you’re making an article when you’re the copyright holder.

JEDIT: My friend points out that they have the rights to that image thanks to their “Ships of the Line” calendar series. But the question of “Why are we using this image in an official capacity?” still stands.

I’m still pissed at Paramount but now I’m curious. They just put out a third trailer. Is…that an NX-class vessel at the end?

Yeah, apparently the crew finds an old NX-era ship. Even though the NX exists on screen (as a model in STID), the Kelvin Timeline somehow has a different model Warp 4 ship. This has some precedent, as the Archon in the comics has similar adjustments, and it was supposed to be an NX-era ship too.

The recently released official Celebration itinerary has the screening listed as “Star Wars: A New Hope”. All that can really be inferred from that is that they want to be consistent with TFA’s downplaying of the episode numbers, but the fact that Disney isn’t squeamish about switching around the title of a film from before they acquired LFL gives me a small amount of hope that they’d be willing to walk back more the extreme Lucasisms in the future.

Related to all this (in that, I wonder what is even available for them to play at the event), does anyone know what version of the OT was played in those theatrical marathons when TFA released? I’ve been wondering if it was fairly new DCPs for the 2011 versions, or if they still have to theatrically distribute the '97 SEs.

They were DCP’s of the 2011 version, but somehow looked worse than the Blu-ray, my source tells me.
